Exclusive: Experts say Alliance Defending Freedom, arguing to revive conversion therapy, ‘profoundly misrepresented’ their work in case threatening trans and queer youth

On Tuesday, a Christian legal group will urge the US supreme court to overturn a ban on anti-LGBTQ+ “conversion therapy” in a case that could erode protections for transgender and queer youth across the country.

Lawyers from Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which has opposed abortion and LGBTQ+ rights in high-profile litigation, are representing a woman challenging a 2019 Colorado law that prohibited conversion practices for youth under age 18. The ban applies to licensed clinicians who seek to change a patient’s sexual orientation or gender identity, tactics medical groups have discredited as harmful and ineffective.

ADF’s petition in the case, Chiles v Salazar, cited several scholars to support its argument that conversion practices should once again be permitted. Two of those experts, however, told the Guardian that ADF had “profoundly” misrepresented their research, which discussed the “psychological damage” of conversion therapy.

Christians being Christians. But why didn't opposing side check this? Seems like a common sense thing to confirm if you are in front of the supreme court

They aren't hearing arguments until tomorrow, so there hasn't been a point where this could be raised in court, only in the court of public opinion.

SCOTUS shouldn't be using religious orgs to make decisions

ALL religious groups deceive everyone about everything. Their entire religions are based on lies and fiction, with zero proof to back up any of their claims in thousands of years of trying.

OF COURSE they deceived them, everything that they do is deception.

Torture.

I am so beyond fucking sick of it being constantly washed as 'therapy'. It is not therapeutic in any way.

Australia pushed to rebrand the 'king hit' as a coward punch. Just like that. It is not hard.

for conservatives cruelty is having Christian excist in a world with queer people.

but Christians torturing queer people, it's fine for them.

the more I hear about how persecuted Christians are the more I wish they were going extinct
