Reminder. There is no country on Earth that currently accepts asylum claims from trans Americans. America is assumed to be a "safe" country in the immigration laws of most countries.

I heard Norway was considering it recently

What you're thinking of is this:

https://trans-express.lgbt/post/780059017315811328/norwegian-transgender-politician-wants-to-give

A single trans person, a candidate for parliament, is running with this as one of her campaign planks. There has been no change in government policy. No major party has rallied behind the idea. A single person says she would like to do it, and that's it.

The real danger is that by the time things get bad enough that countries have no room to deny it anymore, it may be too late. I'm sure if tomorrow they announce that they're revoking the passport of anyone who has ever changed their gender marker, that many countries would consider that a bridge too far and start granting asylum claims. But by then it would be too late. Currently, countries are using various excuses to deny asylum claims from trans Americans. The most common claim is that they'll point out that the US has many states, and that the blue states are still relatively safe. But the real problem now is that these laws are going federal.

This is literally what happened in the historical Holocaust. Jews were not politically popular anywhere. No country's leaders wanted the political heat of accepting a large number of Jewish refugees. But most also didn't want to appear openly antisemitic. So instead they denied the severity of the situation for years. By the time they actually started accepting refugee claims, Jewish people already had their passports revoked. By the time they admitted the problem, it was too late. Oh, and of course, one shouldn't forget that trans people were also among the first victims of the Nazi Holocaust. And unlike the Jews, the queer people in the concentration camps weren't released after the war ended.

Time to brain drain America

Didn't Canada joke they would accept American asylum seekers during Cheeto part 1?

[–] sugarfoot00@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

While not officially asylum seekers, both Canada and the EU have taken steps to recruit in-demand Americans wishing to leave. BC is overtly wooing US health care workers, Canada as a whole is courting scientists and researchers, and France has made statements welcoming researchers as well.
