The oil has peaked, so the economics have changed. They don’t need to maximize the total amount sold per year anymore; they just need to make the most of what’s left.

Economics Explained, I think, called it “the party at the end of the world.” It’s also why they’re posting record profits - they don’t to invest anything into the future anymore; they can just keep it, for the most part.
