Google Messages RCS chats have a low-quality media problem. We now know how Google will solve this — just in time for iPhone RCS support.

is RCS not already sending high quality media? I though that was a main benefit

Google is too busy adding Gemini(and other AI features) to focus on basic useful RCS features. Like

I saw this this morning. Instant disable. Can't we just have a good, simple messaging app ?

Its HQ compared to SMS with iPhones at least. I love it when I get blurry blobs of pixels.

From the screenshots it sounds like it already can send medium quality photos, this is adding an original uncompressed option. Even signal sends compressed images by default unless you switch it to HQ.

I’m on the iOS beta which already supports RCS and half my Android friends still show up as SMS. Why? Because they’re running Samsung phones from 2021 that haven’t been updated or they’re using the Samsung messaging client which apperantly sucks at RCS. It’ll be interesting when things do roll out. For those that support RCS it’s been great.

I've turned off RCS on my Android because it would often fail to send/recieve messages without warning. Same thing with my family. It's a step backwards for texting in my experience.
