MODERATORS

With the ban going into effect, I thought it might be helpful to allow people to share their experiences about the Australian teen social media ban and how it has affected them.

Note: For the Aussie Zone lemmy requirements, see here. Please use that thread for an Aussie Zone specific discussions or questions.

Good luck, everyone!

You are sadly mistaken. VPNs will be blocked.

"Social media platforms that comply with Australia’s new social media ban for under-16 users must also attempt to stop such users from using virtual private networks (VPNs) to appear as though they are outside the country, according to guidance issued by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner."

Some believe that this is a backdoor to banning VPNs for private use altogether.

No they won't be.

Firstly it is technically impossible. Even China cannot do it.

Secondly, businesses need them for WFH.

Thirdly, the government is not implementing a block themselves. They are trying to pass on the unreasonable onus onto website owners.

If the website owners do it, then ????

I already know a heap of VPN servers I can't access youtube or reddit from.

I bet you most of them won't

IP addresses change. Your VPN server will change them (if it is any good).

Nephew, I really hope all your accounts aren't banned by social media

They are not banning the Fediverse because there is no central body to fine.
