Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Question in title. Just wondering as I saw France had proposed an initiative to withdraw because of the US' shenanigans....

I'm simmering some chicken bones right now and google says a simmer temp is between 180-205. My instant-read thermometer is registering 203 but there is zero bubbling, is my thermometer off or is this normal?

I'm guessing a lot of people are going to say Illustrator or Inkscape. Are there any raster art programs?

Ganondorf-schtoyle? Is there ettiquette, any?

NOOOOOOO, WINNIE, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I saw someone saying recently that Canada has made a huge shift away from the US. As someone Canadian, I haven't noticed anything beyond relatively minor individual decisions (IE, not going to the US as a tourist). I'd like to be wrong, but from my understanding, this is effectively nothing. Has there actually been any sort of large scale move away from US dependence?

In all the years I've been around, both on the internet & among friends and acquaintances from Asia (incl. Taiwan & China), WtP has been a symbol of resistance against Xi Jin Ping and authoritarianism in China.

I know .ml is heavily tankie in general, but just need a double check from the more reasonable parts of the internet.

This is a kinda embrassing question to ask so pls don't judge.

I did have moments where I like... went to the local library alone, or like an all day school trip or something...

But I never really like... explored outside alone... especially far from home...

So like... I feel scared about the idea of like... just going for a walk all by myself...

I realize I've always just asked parents to drive me somewhere so I never got a chance to just get in the habit of being by myself.

I don't have a driver's license so I don't really have like a car to "retreat to", if you know what I mean, like as in sort of "castle".

How do I even "feel safe" just being outside on my own? For context I'm non-white so it's... kinda intimidating... especially in the current context of US political atmosphere.

A couple weeks ago on New Year's Eve, my mom had to run a couple of errands, and I asked her if she can pick me up some allergy meds whilst she was out.

My nose was itchy and stuffy and I was having bad sinus headaches.

When she came home about an hour later, she gave me a bottle of allergy meds and she told me "I looked in two different stores, but they don't make over the counter allergy meds for a stuffy nose. At least, all the allerg meds i could find were for runny nose."

And I just find that weird. Because my nose wasn't runny. It was stuffed to the point I could hardly breathe through it properly. But apparently cold and flu meds are for stuffy noses

Why don't they make OTC allergy meds like Claritin or Allegra-D for stuffy noses?

We are all well-aware of programmers volunteering their time to open source projects. Another common example are lawyers who work on cases pro bono.

Which got me thinking, what about marketeers? I have never heard of marketeers volunteering their time and skill. Could it be that such marketeers work in small organisations that nobody has heard of? Could it be that marketing requires way more resources than building software or legal work, such that the barrier of entry to volunteer marketing work is set too high for individuals?

This question came to me while looking at

inspiration for question; off-topicthis post. This is clearly a marketing problem, and I thought it would be nice if there are some professional marketeers to lead the marketing effort or provide some advice to the community.

Why is kissing? (piefed.blahaj.zone)

Asked in a funny way, but what do you think legitimately? Why do people kiss? Is it evolutionarily advantageous? Why not just touch ears together or something? Why do you personally kiss? Do you also wonder why is kissing?

So my current project uses VL53L4CD time of flight sensor and I want a lens to keep the shmoo off of it. I tried this IR transparent film but it still blocks the sensor.

For awhile it was single downvotes, but it seems that moved up to 2-3 on each comment. Even the most benign stuff gets hit, the pattern is clear.

Can I find this person and block them from seeing my posts? Never really delved into how lemmy works.

Probably doesn't matter much because after awhile the forget and leave me alone for a bit.

I think what's difficult to grasp is how easy they kidnapped Maduro. If it's as easy as a few months of training, simulation and intelligence and then just do it, how is it possible that none of the other much worse world leaders have not had this happen to them until now? Has this ever even happened in recent history?

You're telling me the US had the capability to eliminate any of the worst ones in much more problematic countries and chose not to because there was no oil in it for them? That's a grim thought.

I see this on Imgur and Bluesky as well. Here's a great example, and the one that prompted me to finally ask. My daughter has autism and ADHD. She takes speed to slow down. Best friend is ADHD, same deal. But they're basically "normal" people. I'm truly sorry is this comes off as insensitive.

  • It's normal to be aware of how people perceive us. We are apes. Need I elaborate?

  • We ALL mess up more when someone is watching. Forget the word, but it's a well-known psychological tic.

  • Yes, we all conform and hide parts of ourselves in public, doesn't mean you can't "be yourself". Want to see someone who doesn't mask at all? Trump.

  • If you're not aware of threats, Darwin would like a word. And yes, many things we perceive as threats are dumb monkey perceptions. We're all silly in this way.

  • Uh, I double check my door locks. Not paranoid, but my situation in America makes that a simple, smart move. Some people live around lots of strangers, checking your private space is a normal thing.

  • We all hate being stared at. That's a monkey threat. We evolved that way.

The "suspicious sounds" thing is the only part I'd pick out as a bit strange. But who hasn't jumped when the ice maker kicks in? I've often thought someone crawled in the dog door. (A bear did one time, a hybrid wolf another, so let me slide on that one.)

I can go on /c/autism and pick 100 other memes for examples. Almost every single thing I see there, "Yeah, we all go though that/feel that way/do that thing." Here's one:

https://piefed.cdn.blahaj.zone/posts/6k/Lb/6kLbDigyQuftk4k.jpg

Doesn't everyone do that now and again?! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Serious questions:

  • Does lemmy have an above normal number of autistic/ADHD people?

  • Is this perception a way for young people to feel special and different?

  • Maybe young people don't realize just how fucking weird growing up is and think they have a problem?

  • Do people not realize that even after adulthood, we all have weird foibles?

  • Are people so socially isolated that they think their weird thoughts are uncommon?

Just want to start the discussion. Help me understand.

How to vote? (lemmy.today)
submitted 4 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) by gunny@lemmy.today to c/nostupidquestions@lemmy.world

Okay, say there's a post that says something bad... what do I (or you) do? Do you upvote it because it's like "thank you for pointing this out", or does your upvote mean you support whatever the post says (which is kinda the opposite)?

This is super important and not sure how many people know what they're doing lmao

Edit: Okay. It has been decided. We need more buttons than just Up/Down 🥲

  1. Some of them talked me out of suicide. They didn't judge me or tell me "grow up, you crying miserable b***" they just listened, talked with me for a long time, related to me with their own things, and didn't make me feel guilty or like I'd done something bad by letting my emotions out. They were genuinely concerned for me and were almost like friends.

  2. When I was being harassed, they either dealt with them or offered me support/advice on what to do, and offered me encouragement, even if I was crying.

  3. Most of my friends at school were from this scene, and they were genuinely kind, loyal, and very funny people.

  4. One time I lost my purse and was freaking out. I was already having a bad day and some man who belonged to said subculture comes out of nowhere and finds it for me. Again, even though I was crying, he didn't judge me or insult me over it.

When I'm feeling depressed, I look up videos, posts, etc about the subculture, and it makes me feel comforted. Relived this subculture that's so sentimental to me is still going. Comforted, but also there's this bittersweet feeling, because I think none of those people I knew before are with me right now, I either lost contact with them or the men who talked me out of suicide don't hang out in the spot they hung out in anymore. Aside from therapists, they're the only other group of people I feel comfortable about opening up to. I bottle up my emotions normally. I feel like if this subculture died out tomorrow my world would feel a lot colder.

i know there are processes you must follow and not just any country will let you in, so what must someone look for when it comes to finding a new country? i might go to the netherlands because i wanna go there, but it may not be allowed given the circumstances. i ask because someone was asking what country should they live in and people were arguing over it.
