Just when we thought Epic v. Google might be over, just one Supreme Court rejection away from a complete victory for Epic, both sides have agreed to settle Tuesday evening. And if Judge James Donato, who ordered Google to crack open Android for third-party stores, agrees to the changes, it might turn Epic’s victory into a lasting global one.

Previously, Judge Donato agreed to some of Epic’s biggest demands. He issued a permanent injunction that will force Google to carry rival app stores within its own Google Play Store, and give those rival stores access to the full catalog of Google Play apps, to restore competition to the Android marketplace. The injunction also forced Google to stop requiring developers to use Google Play Billing, after a jury found the company had illegally tied its app store to its payments system.

I’m looking for an app to manage recurring household tasks. Some things I do daily, some weekly, some twice a month. I want something that can show me what’s next instead of just a list of everything.

I'm not looking for a scheduler like Google Calendar. I don’t want to assign fixed dates or times to tasks. Instead:

  • Whenever I cross off a task, it should sit inactive until the next recurrence interval
  • Then it should automatically become active again
  • And I want the app to show me which task I have to perform next

Any recommendations for an Android app to notify me of recurring chores when it's time to perform them again?

Google has updated its support pages to confirm that it’s abiding by the court’s order. In the US, Play Store developers now have the option of using external payment platforms that bypass the Play Store entirely. This could hypothetically allow developers to offer lower prices, as they don’t have to pay Google’s commission, which can be up to 30 percent. Devs will also be permitted to direct users to sources for app downloads and payment methods outside the Play Store.

TL;DR

  • Google Maps appears to be working on a new power saving mode for navigation.
  • The mode would eliminate almost all UI elements and extraneous map labeling from your view.
  • Power saving mode limitations could prevent it from working in landscape or with public transit

As BlissOS is on halt and mostly silent from what I could find and Android-x86 is a legacy system at this point, I was looking for alternatives.

Spotted a few on alternativeto, but unfamiliar with either: FydeOS, PrimeOS, OpenThos, Maru, and so on.

Now, are any of them good as alternatives for vanilla desktop Android?
And although vanilla would imply this (least I would imagine), asking just to be sure, are any of them concerning/problematic when it comes to privacy?
And lastly, any other miscellaneous points I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

Edit:
This is awkward...
Just noticed that OpenThos is discontinued, Maru hasn't had updates since 2019, and PrimeOS's site is offline, leaving only FydeOS, I guess?

Still, keeping the questions for FydeOS, and I add:
Any alternatives I missed?

Hi, I hope it's the correct place to post this.

After finding that my S10 is an american version and it's too hard to put a custom ROM, I decided to try again to use my pixel 5. I had GrapheneOS on it, and I dislike it a lot. So I put back the stock ROM and installed Lineage. I found that almost everything I hate on Graphene is actually because of the stock ROM and anything based on it will be the same. I found that what I like about android is actually samsung changes.

Then I tried CrDroid, which seemed kind of amateur looking to me (maybe because of the logo? or the bad install instructions? I don't know). And was I wrong! It brought back the joy of trying custom ROMs I experienced in the early days of android. So MANY things you can customize... almost anything you want is actually there.

Besides being fun to use I made it work much better than samsung (for me), with better usability, without any spyware and performance issues. Things like:

-Change the brightness just by sliding the top of the phone. (multiple annoying clicks and slides on stock ROM)

-Haptic feedback when changing it, so in case I didn't set it to auto brightness, I can change even if I can't see the screen in the sun.

-Per app network permissions (common to custom ROMs apparently, but a massive reason to get rid of samsung).

-Massive customization on the top drawer. I can finally have all options I want with just one slide, specially wifi and mobile data in a single click, separated buttons (multiple clicks on stock, because it's mixed in the mystic "internet" button, which I hated so much)

-No google search bar garbage forcing me to put a custom launcher to to get rid of it.

-Great performance and battery life. (though also common for most custom ROMs).

-Much more, almost anything you want.

The only things I haven't found yet is how to add labels to the top tiles and automatically set file transfer when connecting a cable (it always go to charging and requires a password to connect, which is nice for security but it should ask it just once).

Besides that it's just sad that the pixel5 is a shitty phone (no headphone jack or SD card), but most phones are like that these days. I wish it was easier to put CrDroid on the s10 (and the hardware is as well supported).

Anyway, it's a personal experience, but it may be useful for anyone on the fence about trying CrDroid, or even just to try a custom ROM. Lineage and Graphene is almost the same as stock without google crap, so it's not that much more worthy the effort trying to change it. But CrDroid is, if you are looking for something really different.

And of course, it doesn't have the Snowden level of security of Graphene, so the CIA might find my plans to steal Trump's fake tan warehouse. But I'm happy with that risk.

P.S.: If you do decide to try, you may get stuck trying to find all the files required on the instructions (at least I did). For example, in the pixel 5 download page:

https://crdroid.net/redfin/12

You will find vendor_boot.img on the "recovery" button on that page, like this one https://sourceforge.net/projects/crdroid/files/redfin/12.x/recovery/latest/

And the other ones on the "Download older versions" button like this https://sourceforge.net/projects/crdroid/files/redfin/12.x/

It didn't seem to be right, but it is, or at least it worked for me.

The 3.5mm headphone jack has nearly gone extinct, but these excellent Android phones are still holding on.

Hey! Recently, I forked and started working on an app that lets you create backups powered by Restic on your Android device.

The original repository was restic-android by Ihns on GitHub.

So far, I’ve integrated rclone and local repositories, so the app now supports S3, B2, REST, local, and rclone backups.

Also, I’ve added ntfy notifications, export/import functionality, and done a UI redesign.

You can check out my project on Codeberg: https://codeberg.org/dawdyd/resticopia

It’s still not completely stable, but feel free to give it a try anyway! 👍
