Alright folks, I decided to implement one of the ideas I had for how we can make something together.

Here's how it'll go:

  • All top level comments on this post should be images that you think would make a cool fake album cover (Would be cool if you mentioned the source as well)
  • All replies to top level comments should be fake artist + album names
  • If you like a particular combination of image and name, feel free to make that fake album cover and post it, with the [Album Jam] tag

Let the album jam begin!

Hi! Welcome to !fakealbumcovers@lemm.ee.

So what is this place?

Any and all fake album covers are welcome here. Yes, you can create fake albums for existing artists, though in that case you'll probably be expected to fit the style the artist has used before.

At their core, fake album covers can be art in and of themselves, but also a glimpse into what could be. That's what drew me to them, and I hope this community grows into a place that makes that evident.

Why the emphasis on OC?

I understand the appeal to take the top rated posts on r/fakealbumcovers, but filling the community with reposts won't build any momentum. If you want to see this place grow, make a post!

And to clarify an adjacent point, the OC requirement extends to the final product, which includes everything in your post. So taking a base image and editing it is fine, or even if you include an unedited image, but have the perfect name or fake backstory, it's OC in my book.

I want to make a post, but I can't come up with anything. What do I do?

First and foremost, don't force it. Spend some time looking at the real album covers that you're drawn to, and see if there's a specific element you want to evoke from what you make as well.

If you're really at your wits' end, and you just want to get started with something, there is the Album Cover Game. Considering that the name and image are more or less random, you'd probably have to put some effort on the editing/graphic design part of things to make it stand out.

I don't know editing, so what do I do here?

First, the obligatory "you can always learn". I haven't progressed much beyond adjustment layers in Photoshop, so I get how daunting it can be.

However, I think there are ways to contribute even if you're not creating an entire album cover from scratch. From how I see it, there are three aspects to this:

  1. Finding the 'right' image
  2. Coming up with a name for the album and artist (And anything else to flesh it out like genre or tracklist, optionally)
  3. Editing the image so it feels like an album cover

I'd like to find a way for people to do at least 1 and 2, and potentially find cool combinations, and hopefully end up as posts once someone edits them. The immediate idea I had was for a weekly thread where top level comments have to images (you'll have to host them elsewhere like imgur and link to them), and replies to top level comments have to be "Artist Name" - "Album Name". If this sounds like something you'd be interested to participate in, or even if you have other suggestions, do chime in down below!
