The educational foundation of Germany’s youth is showing significant cracks as data reveals a sharp rise in students being forced to repeat the first grade. This trend is most pronounced from those with a migration background, where language barriers and a lack of early childhood preparation are prevalent.

At the Nordmarkt elementary school in Dortmund, an alarming 97 percent of first-graders are forced to repeat the first grade, Focus Magazine reports. The primary drivers for this delay include a lack of basic skills and the fact that many children “hardly speak German.”

While Germany could always absorb a certain number of non-German speakers, the numbers have grown beyond the ability of educators. Now, nationwide, the statistics are stark and breaking records. Over 41,000 first graders across Germany are repeating their first year. Children with a migrant background — particularly those who did not attend daycare — are the most heavily affected.

Regional disparity is also high; in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), 22,894 students, equalling 6 percent of all students, repeated the grade last year, while states like Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg see rates as low as 1 to 2 percent. However, as states like Bavaria become more diverse, the future may also present increasing challenges for these states as well. Currently, native German speakers are a minority in 1 in 5 classrooms across Bavaria.

“I’m not trying to impress you, I’m just trying to impress upon you, ‘I’m like you. I’m not better than you.’ I’m a 960 SAT guy,” he said. “And I’m not trying to offend anyone; I’m not trying to act all there if you got 940 … You’ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech.”

A Bosnian national, identified as Huso B., is being labeled one of the worst cases of a foreigner taking advantage of Germany’s generous welfare system. The man, who has numerous criminal offenses on his record, remains in Germany despite being under a mandatory order to leave the country for 23 years.

Remarkably, the German justice system failed to find him and “suspended” criminal proceedings against him, while Bild newspaper then went on to find him with ease.

Despite Huso B. overstaying his welcome by decades, the state provides him €7250.77 every month to support his wife and eight children.

The bureaucratic confusion reached a new peak last December. When the Cologne District Court attempted to try B. on fraud charges, officials claimed he could not be located—despite his address being documented by the City of Cologne and the city’s job center. However, reporters from Bild newspaper were able to find him almost immediately.

On Dec. 8, 2025, Huso B. was scheduled to appear before the Cologne District Court. He faces allegations of defrauding a drugstore chain out of a four-figure sum across three separate instances. However, the trial was derailed because the court’s formal summons was reportedly never served at his asylum seeker accommodation.

According to officials, the postman was unable to deliver the documents to B. personally or leave them in a mailbox. Because the court was “thus unable to load him,“ the trial date was scrapped, and the legal proceedings were suspended.

Bild, however, appears to have embarrassed the city government and the German legal system. The paper sent a reporter directly to the asylum seeker’s home in southern Cologne. There, without much work, they found his mailbox with his name clearly listed.

Not only that, but once the reporters arrived, they found Huso B. in person. He spoke to the reporters, telling them that he does not have any legal troubles and the last time he was investigated was back in 2014.

Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has been reminded of his “responsibilities as a participant in English football” after he triggered a storm of criticism for claiming the United Kingdom had been “colonised” by immigrants.

But England’s Football Association will not be charging Ratcliffe over his comments, which were widely condemned by political figures, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and the club’s supporters.

The governing body issued Ratcliffe with a reminder of his responsibilities when taking part in media interviews, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Friday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

British billionaire Ratcliffe, who owns petrochemicals giant INEOS, made the comments during an interview with Sky News, which aired last week.

“You can’t have an economy with 9 million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in,” he said. “I mean, the UK’s been colonised.”

Donald Trump has flip-flopped over whether Sir Keir Starmer should ‘give in to wokeism’ and hand the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius, a day after approving the deal.

His defiant message comes as dozens of planes head towards the Middle East with tensions between Iran and the US reaching a breaking point after nuclear talks.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, the US president said Sir Keir would be making ‘a big mistake’ if he proceeded with plans to hand over the islands – which are home to a joint US-UK military base.

The plans would see the UK lease the base on Diego Garcia from Mauritius at a cost of £35 billion over the next century.

On Tuesday, the US State Department said it ‘supports the decision of the United Kingdom to proceed with its agreement with Mauritius concerning the Chagos archipelago’.

But in his post on Wednesday, Mr Trump said leases were ‘no good’, adding the base could be necessary for a strike on Iran.

He said: ‘Prime Minister Starmer should not lose control, for any reason, of Diego Garcia, by entering a tenuous, at best, 100 Year Lease.

‘This land should not be taken away from the UK and, if it is allowed to be, it will be a blight on our Great Ally.

‘We will always be ready, willing, and able to fight for the UK, but they have to remain strong in the face of Wokeism, and other problems put before them. Do not give away Diego Garcia.’

A Lebanese immigrant ordered deported in December 2019 after he was convicted for possession of fentanyl and hydromorphone for the purposes of trafficking has won another chance to stay in Canada.

Mohamad Kassar, who arrived in Canada as a permanent resident about 35 years ago, was scheduled to be removed to Lebanon on Feb. 13. Instead, Federal Court Justice Angus Grant stayed his removal because Kassar has a preliminary diagnosis suggesting he might have a lung tumour.

“Given (Kassar’s) medical vulnerability, and given his dependence on uninterrupted treatment to avoid morbidity and potential mortality, I am satisfied that (he) has provided clear, convincing, and non-speculative evidence of the harm that he would experience if his removal is not deferred,” Grant wrote in a recent decision out of Toronto.

Over the years, fentanyl has become the dominant street drug across Canada, taking thousands of lives.

But the judge was “convinced that the balance of convenience in this matter rests with” Kassar.
