In Germany "how are you" is also smalltalk but you are not expected to lie. Just keep it short.

It's funny how many Americans don't realize that there are people living life outside the US that also have access to the internet and Lemmy.

As someone living in an area where I can literally walk into 3 different countries (even if I need to hike a few hours) I cannot wrap my head around that exceptionalism.

I love talking with kids in that phase. The raw curiosity and interest in the mundane is so refreshing.

Sometimes I feel like many adults hate to learn new stuff and even get offended by the idea. It's heartbreaking seeing those interact with inquisitive children, when they answer honest curiosity with indifference or worse anger.
