I'm in danger

(Actually just in regard of the essential oils. I won't say anything bad about vegan diets. But please, give your babies breast milk if possible or at least consult an actual doctor about vegan diets for babies.)

I would actually be interested in vegan diets for babies. I know it should work theoretically, but you need to be very careful about not missing something. Babies probably have wildly different nutrient requirements than adults. I'll probably read up on it sometime sounds interesting.

BTW the real question is: "Is breast milk vegan?"

[-] amzd@kbin.social 16 points 7 months ago

Breast milk is vegan if the mother consents to giving it.

Veganism is a philosophy which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment.

I’ve always wondered about nutritional yeast though.

Like. How is that vegan.

[-] novibe@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago

We breathe in a swallow billions of bacteria all the time. Is that vegan?

[-] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works -2 points 7 months ago

… Nutritional Yeast is eaten on purpose though.

[-] novibe@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago

If you know bacteria exist and keep breathing, you are also ingesting them on purpose no?

[-] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works -3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

We may have found the densest substance known to man here folks.

Breathing is a required function of living. If I don’t breath then I die. If I try to stop breathing I will pass out and my body will breathe automatically. I am not choosing to breathe.

Eating is a requirement. Eating nutritional yeast is optional. You choose to eat it.

[-] novibe@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago

You are asking if YEAST is vegan, how am I dense? Veganism is related to ANIMAL products, yeast is not an animal! Just think for two seconds before commenting if you don’t want people to be rude online lmao

Asking if yeast is vegan is as stupid as asking if getting high on shrooms is vegan… like people man cmon…

[-] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works -1 points 7 months ago

So having been able to answer my initial question with a simple “no yeast isn’t an animal” you opted to ask me obtuse questions hoping I’d infer the magic knowledge.

Again you are in fact the fucking dense one.

[-] amzd@kbin.social 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

It is a yeast, yeast doesn’t have nerve endings or a brain and therefore can’t feel pain and suffer.

[-] Zron@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Is jelly fish vegan then?

Mushrooms have complicated communication systems and reproduce sexually, why are they vegan?

[-] amzd@kbin.social 2 points 7 months ago

Maybe? Idk? I don’t know anything about them therefore I personally wouldn’t hurt them. It’s also kinda weird splitting hairs like this with someone that chooses to send fully conscious beings to slaughter.

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago

No one's forcing you to comply with a specific interpretation of veganism. You can choose your own journey here.

[-] prettybunnys@sh.itjust.works 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Can’t feel pain and suffer in any way we’re capable of understanding.

Is it a lack central nervousness that makes something vegan?

To me it feels arbitrary, I’m asking because I’m genuinely curious.

are flatworms vegan?

Anyone confused like me: it literally just appears to be animals. If it isn’t technically an animal it is fair game.

[-] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 14 points 7 months ago

The essential oils part of this tells me they likely aren't looking into a vegan diet with a proper nutrient range, or if they are really trying then they're getting their information from a "health" grifter of some sort.

[-] Rozauhtuno@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 7 months ago

Yes, because it's not obtained through force or exploitation.

Hopefully.

The health of the baby mostly comes down to the health of the mother (yes breast milk is vegan), and I'd wager vegan dieters on average to be more knowledgeable about nutrients than your average person. Being deficient in nutrients at such a young age, especially in the womb, can cause permanent damage. So knowing where the gaps are in what you eat and properly supplementing is important, which doesn't just apply to vegans.

On a vegan diet nutrient toxicities from things like iron and vitamin A are less of a concern as well because of the form they are consumed in, as well as toxicity from minerals that shouldn't be there that become concentrated in herbivores and even more so in predators. Also there is a protective effect to certain foods like soy at a young age, where the reverse is true of say dairy.

The essential oils thing in the meme is concerning though. First of all I would associate that with someone who consumes a vegan diet for mystical reasons, probably one containing mostly or all raw food. On such a diet it can be hard to consume enough food for one individual, and now you have to eat enough for baby as well. The other thing I'd be concerned about is toxicity with the oils, especially if they are poorly tested and contain things that aren't supposed to be present in a significant amount.

[-] MareOfNights@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 7 months ago

Yea, if your parents talk about essential oils you are not getting vaccinated XD Unlucky spawn

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 4 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Human breast milk is technically the only animal byproduct that could be vegan, since humans can consent to giving it. Well, and legal. You could technically consent to have your entire body consumed; but it wouldn't be legal.

[-] MareOfNights@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 7 months ago

NSFW

!Technically semen would also count then. Not a similar quantity, but also a protein source XD!<

[-] Ephera@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago

Isn't it just vitamin B12, which is somewhat of a problem (but which can be easily supplemented and is added to lots of vegan products already)?

At the very least, experts seem to be screaming at humanity to, please, eat their veggies and like tenfold less meat...

[-] ExfilBravo@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago

Don't lump Vegans in with crazy essential oils people. We just don't want to kill animals. Why does that make us crazy?

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 3 points 7 months ago

Crunchy granola vegans are definitely a thing
