I’m sure Freddie Mercury gets whatever he wants.

[-] FriendOfElphaba@sh.itjust.works 57 points 9 months ago

Freddy Mercury as a fireman was never a fantasy for me until now. I have to go take a shower.

[-] fossphi@lemm.ee 6 points 9 months ago

So, did you finish? The shower I mean

[-] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 13 points 9 months ago

Especially if he's walking around these days

[-] LEDZeppelin@lemmy.world 57 points 9 months ago

Were they under pressure?

[-] aberrate_junior_beatnik@lemmy.world 39 points 9 months ago

Honestly I'm sure firefighters spend most of their time being bored waiting around for a fire so they probably welcome the distraction.

[-] orphiebaby@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago

I misread that as "bored, waiting around a fire"

[-] Pencilnoob@lemmy.world 35 points 9 months ago

And if you live in a volunteer district you can even sign up and get to ride to a real fire.

I joined last year and it was a great decision. I love getting to help my community, and I've made some great friends already.

Volunteer!

At a USAF civilian auxiliary encampment I got to sit in one of those big yellow airport fire trucks, the kind with the huge water cannon, bright yellow paint, slanted "cockpit" widow, joystick+cameras inside, etc. It was amazing. Then they had my squadron put on PTs, marched us in formation into a gravel drainage trap, and shot the cannon up at like 60° to create a rainstorm above us. Fun times.

I had the absolute pleasure to sit in BOTH of these Panthers at Innsbruck airport last year.

They even startet the engines and drove out of the hangar with us inside and gave us a little water salute. Absolute pleasure, I felt like a little kid!

I do have a video of the spray, sadly there were many people around and I don't want to show their faces. Needless to say these things shoot water like a rocket!

[-] mod@sh.itjust.works 6 points 9 months ago

Absolute beauts! Would've loved to watch the video. Is it hard to mask peoples' faces?

[-] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 9 points 9 months ago

Depends. If they’re Republicans…

[-] PopShark@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Dude that’s really fuckin cool thanks for posting the video!

[-] mod@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago

Nice! Seems they pack quite a punch. Thanks for the effort (:

[-] lud@lemm.ee 0 points 9 months ago

That's cool.

Thanks for spending the time filming and then motion tracking people.

[-] flicker@lemmy.world 23 points 9 months ago

Mister Fahrenheit himself.

[-] Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 months ago

Books anyone?

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 21 points 9 months ago

Does this work for fighter jets?

[-] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 12 points 9 months ago

Probably if you can get close to one

[-] notoftenthat@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 months ago

It's all fun and games until you get the APU running...

Idk but it worked with a C-17 for me. All about being in the right groups (being a civilian auxiliary of USAF helps).

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

You can usually sit in some older ones at air shows, or air museums. Sometimes they'll let you sit in new ones too! I got to sit in an FA-18 when I was a kid at an airshow, but they had all the gauges blacked out so you couldn't see classified parts of the jet. You can sit in the cockpit of an SR-71 Blackbird at the Boeing air museum in Renton, WA, but it is detached from the rest of the plane.

For sure! My community is served by a volunteer department and I joined a couple years ago, definitely a rewarding experience. Now not only have I gotten to sit in a truck, but I drive them, have learned all sorts of cool tools like the jaws of life and get to work with a great group of people serving our community.

You don't need to be young and fit either (I'm not!), there's a job for everyone. Anyone who's interested should definitely check out their local department. Most have active Facebook pages sharing updates and their website should have info on how to learn more about joining.

How much of your time is spent polishing the fire engine, and painting facer boards on the fire station? My friend's dad was a Firefighter for 30 years, and he said his time was evenly split between cleaning & polishing things, playing poker at the fire station, and BBQ'ing behind the fire station. He made the job sound like it's mostly just hanging out with your friends all the time, interspersed with a few moments of heroism, and a few moments of life-threatening terror.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 9 months ago

It almost seems like a shame too leave to fight some fires.

[-] CaptainHowdy@lemm.ee 9 points 9 months ago

This is wholesome and great.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 9 months ago

Don’t stop him now.
