Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

They're not entirely wrong.

Is the left one really an ancient statue? Not saying no women looked like that at the time but the proportions, style and pose sure seem very "modern coded".

[–] Obviouslywrong@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (3 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apsara

Apsaras are very old and traditional and had sexy thick curves, that's not a modern thing at all.

I'll be in my bunk

[–] mad_lentil@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Ah, ancient India. OK that fits now.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

i was gonna say, there's this indian temple from 1000 CE that is chock full of these statues.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 5 points 1 day ago

Finally, a religion that makes sense.

[–] ATPA9@feddit.org 69 points 3 days ago (5 children)

I'm unconvinced by the whole argument that what is attractive is determined by the media rather than the other way around. IMO it's more of a case of the media attracting a lot of people at varying levels of attractiveness and the most attractive having their usual advantage, hence there's an unrealistic proportion of attractive people represented in the media (which then messes with our own metric because it skews what we think is common and rare beauty since we see media all the time).

Statues were kinda like the media back then, at least in that someone taking the time to carve one might have been more picky with who it was modeled after. I'd be very surprised if humanity didn't always have a similar range of attractiveness to what we have today, though with less obesity going back to the times when there wasn't so much surplus food (and it wasn't made very accessible to the general population when there was).

I also suspect that the "older postures" before the "modern postures" were the result of control freaks gaining influence in schools and yelling at kids about their posture, and the "modern posture" is more of a case of people getting tired of that shit and ignoring them and going back to more natural postures.

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 20 points 3 days ago

Depends what is ancient and modern for you, but statues with those kind of proportions have existed for at least more than 1000 years on the Indian subcontinent.

[–] dawcas@scribe.disroot.org 40 points 2 days ago

Would they be wrong, tho?

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Plastic won't last that long, next!

You know, that old statue was probably painted - not just the bare monochrome brown you see now. Old statues were more ephemeral than you'd think.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bro doesn't know some of those are made of the most high quality materials known to man, lol

Gooners are no cheapskates, my guy, they have taste

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Axolotl_cpp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I saw many of them being made of ceramic

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Yea, good ones are ceramic, alloys, even treated wood, resins, afaik.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh yes, in that case that may well last 10,000 years.

[–] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

plastic lasts thousands of years, no?

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

As micro plastics.

They are literally idols.

[–] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 5 points 2 days ago

“Worship” is a truncated way of saying “worth-ship.” It’s about what we give worth to. What you worship is what you give your time, energy, and of course money to. So, yeah, these are definitely worshipped.

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 3 days ago

Yeah I was like, no lies detected….

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When I took Anthropology courses in college, they were always going on about these statuettes and how they represented a "cult of fertility". Took me years to realize it was just ancient porn.

[–] PixelGhost@lemmy.eco.br 3 points 1 day ago

"Cult of fertility" is just the politically correct form of saying "fapping to stuff".

[–] gothmog@lemmy.today 21 points 3 days ago

For some archeologist they'll just dig up an innocuous jar.

[–] NihilSineNefas@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

"There's evidence of organic matter that has decayed over the years, we traced back through our archives of which microorganisms broke down biological matter and their waste products, to determine the origins, but the results were unsettling."

"It was semen wasn't it?"

"...it was."

"And the sculpture inside?"

"...These ancient people had rather niche tastes"

[–] L0rdMathias@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 days ago

But each of them will dig up dirt really makes you think.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Fortunately, there's some intersection.

Ah yes my favourite ancient god Astolfo.

(This is mine).

[–] qyron@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago
