Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Scott Brannock, president of Jacksonville-based Tidewater Homes and the Northeast Florida Builders Association [...said, ] "Talking with large shell contractors, large builders, I don’t think they fully anticipated or estimated the amount of immigrant labor that are on our job sites every day."

what a crock of shit lmao, literally anyone could have told you this

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 44 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Tfw you imprisoned all your slaves so now you don't get the fruits of their slave labour

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago

Careful these assholes are very close to looking at that amendment and reinventing slavery from first principles.

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 37 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is when a liberal comes in and says "Yes this is why I support immigration! We need cheap labor" and then I want to hit them with a stick

[–] booty@hexbear.net 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I want to give all the immigrants bullshit office jobs and put these liberals on the roofs and farms gigachad-hd

[–] TheoryofChange@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

I used to think capitalists were strategically trying to create a perfect sweet spot of racism, partial legality and desperation that provided the conditions for exactly that group of workers they are lamenting the loss of in this article. But of course the capitalists drank their own farts and are just genuinely stupid racists.

Cynics who knew they were pushing useful bullshit got replaced by people who grew up with the propaganda and are true believers.

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I genuinely think this is it. You had cynical neoliberals stripping the copper out of the walls under the guise of trickle down economics, racism, etc. Their follower base believed the rhetoric. Now, you mostly have true believer neoliberal politicians being manipulated by the cynical theorists who don't even want to do the "work" of being a neoliberal politician in America, but over time, it will shift to all be dipshit true believers.

for real. it goes to show how pervasive the ideology is that we assume the people benefiting the most under capitalism are clever, doing the calculation and finely tuning the controls for the optimal outcome of durable profit extraction.

it took me actually meeting some of these people to understand that almost all of them are ignorant shitheels who clumsily yank their levers of power to boost their immediate position and frequently sit on their own balls in the process.

it reinforces the idea that this is a system under which contradictions sharpen and tensions heighten because the people with control can't stop themselves.

They would actually make more money and probably be happier if they just did things the Chinese way. But this would require them to not be racist shitheads.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

they are. they do it not by imagining a balance though, but by moving in one direction, overreaching and then correcting, searching for stable equilibrium. from operation wetback (pardon) to whatever clinton was pulling with gatekeeper to trump, it oscillates.

but because size of economy shifts and there are constant shocks due to civil wars/sanctions by usa itself, there is no equilibrium to be found.

I bet 2/3 of contractors voted Republican. Lemme check real quick.

Here's a site of professions and party surprised-pika

And another

[–] miz@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago

so it's more like 3/4

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

are they suggesting they were involved in illegal activity by employing illegal migrants? how can this be, i thought usa was law and order country? not-built-for-this

[–] regul@hexbear.net 37 points 2 days ago (3 children)

It would be very funny to see the difference in polling on:

"I think all illegal immigrants should be convicted of a crime and deported."

vs

"I think anyone who employs an illegal immigrant should be convicted of a crime and jailed."

[–] MeetMeAtTheMovies@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

“Of course. If they didn’t want to be punished they shouldn’t have committed a crime”

vs

“But what if they didn’t know they were illegal? You know how tricky those people can be.”

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

A lot of true believer hogs will absolutely argue the latter, because they have been fundamentally miseducated and do not understand that the entire point of anti-immigrant terror in the US is about keeping a population of hyperexploited and precarious laborers for the ruling class to profit off of. Like they don't live in material reality, they've just been whipped into a rabid racist frenzy to serve as another cog in the exploitation and terror machine, and they've fully internalized the lies that brought them to that point and extrapolated them to their logical conclusion.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

i can almost visualize bourgeois disdain face at the second question, like "jailed for that? i provide them with better future by letting them mow my lawns"

[–] Super_Lumalo@hexbear.net 28 points 2 days ago

I care little for the plight of the small business owner. Let them suffer, may they even suffer 1% of what ICE victims and their families have to go through.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Wonder how many thirds of contractors voted for Trump and are getting exactly what they voted for?

[–] Canis_76@feddit.nl 12 points 2 days ago

Hahahahahahahaha hahahaha

You're all irredeemable in my eyes.
