Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

It's as empty as musk promises

Plastic caps being attached to bottles has nothing to do with carbon footprint, it's to reduce plastic waste in the environment.

SpaceX and Xai merger started with the complete fraud that datancenters in space are an economically viable proposition, when even in the US, solar and batteries on leased Nebraska farmland, is over 5x cheaper, even with most optimistic launch cost assumptions.

Adding jump thrusters to cars is an unrealistic/impractical fraud to justify a spacex tesla merger.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It's to pretend they're actually doing something when people dropped deposits on the 2020 roadster in 2017.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

That ignores the part where data centers in space are just stupidly complicated to currently basically being impossible

You have to start with little things like network latencies, but when you get to heat dissipation things just get stupid.

Then again, stupid impossible is kinda Elmo's modus operandi. Just claim you'll do something stupid and or impossible, people will dance for you, then you just get billions to spend a fee years pretending that you're actually doing it and then you, you know, just dont do it. Elmo musk in a nutshell. IH, that and Hitler babies, that too is his thing

This is misinformation in the sense that caps got attached in order to reduce the likelihood of the bottle cap entering the environment since it is easy to loose, in particular when dumped illegally.

At least AFAIK.

Also those are cold gas thrusters meaning they do take electric energy to power the compressors that refill them, not fossil fuels to burn them.

That being said super cars are a luxury for the medium rich.

I'm glad that you've already pointed out the difference between environment and climate

[–] crispbacon99@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 days ago (10 children)

Most of society's electricity IS from fossil fuels. It has to be charged somehow.

Also the caps were attached to keep the bottle from becoming two separate pieces to help store plastic waste in a more consolidated manner. Also less choking hazards for animals and children.

i'm so excited for when i finally have enough money to buy: an RV with enough solar panels on it to recharge an EV and an EV powerful enough to tow the damn RV.

what's the electric version of rolling coal? blasting Leslie Gore when we pass someone? that will be so fun.

When tethered caps are done well, mostly seen on flat-caps for water bottles, they're actually very convenient. Just flip them over until they click in place and you don't have to worry about holding them or placing them somewhere. Flip them back to close the bottle.

Unfortunately that often is not the case and then they suck.

Fun fact, the EVs normally have a set of fuses which blow when rolled over. These had to be removed for the demo.

EDIT: someone else posted a photo of the demo car itself not even having the high voltage battery installed; in other terms it does not drive.

I wish we could organize to ignore those idiotic product show-offs from billionaire's playgrounds. No talking, no commenting, no sharing, living as if it ever happened. This would make those products be abandoned by investors and fade into the nothingness they deserve, along with their ego and all the invested money.

One can dream...

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

This is the first time I hear about that event. Feels good.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Those thrusters use compressed air.

[–] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Manufacture the system. Compress the air. Go on.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's pretty clear the author here is misinformed and thought that those are rocket engines. Just like they were misinformed about why the caps are attached to the bottles.

Them creating this cartoon and posting it online produced COΒ² as well. Nothing survives that purity test.

Why the fuck am I seeing bottle caps getting compared to some billionaire's vanity project everywhere?

[–] probable_possum@leminal.space 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The direct connection escapes me, too.

It would be more reasonable to compare a measure, that actually helps to reduce trash and co2 footprint with that flying car. Plus: there is no reason to stop it, just because there is one very rich, annoying guy.

The effect of one toy project (look at me I build flying cars. Look at me!) isn't that big. Like Kanemann said, people are poor intuitive statisticians.
