Canceling the game would be unfair to the gamblers. Jesus, have some empathy.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

would've been fair to me, i had money on an incomplete game.

[–] Snort_Owl@hexbear.net 92 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Even though this guy is a certified hog the fact it only delayed the game for 10 minutes while everyone in the crowd watched a guy die in front of them makes me feel sad anyway. Life and death reduced to a minor inconvenience

[–] miz@hexbear.net 83 points 3 days ago

he was treated with the gravity he deserved kelly

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 79 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Yea if you take a step back and strip it of the military context it's absolutely horrific that someone died in front of thousands of people and they still went forward with the game. So little value put on human life even in the face of such a public death.

But he was a troop and it was a troop football game so shrug-outta-hecks

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 62 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They earnestly wanted to livestream shooting a defenseless man in a wheelchair for entertainment. They still want to shoot him btw, just without a camera rolling.

This shit's nothing in comparison.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's what I mean, if this was a case of Joe Shmo Civilian dying during the opening ceremonies of a random football game (even though the average football game is already a militarized propaganda event but ignore that for now) it would be horrifying to hear the game went ahead with barely a delay, but it was a member of the military eating shit and dying before the Most Military Football Game they hold so it just ends up being yet another perfect encapsulation of america

[–] MeowZedong@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 3 days ago

Cost benefit analysis said the game going forward was more important than a human life.

I can't think of a more honestly USian decision.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

hey he (supposedly) didn't know the guy was in a wheelchair and only stopped with the livestream because it would ruin the spectacle. i don't see a firing squad as any worse than other methods of execution (and it's preferable to some for the recipient) the problem is that it's the united states doing it.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

An established state does not have any valid reasons to execute defenseless people anyways.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

i'm cool with the CEOs of companies who poison baby formula getting killed by the state. Hell, if the US decided to execute the Sackler family i wouldn't get out of bed over it.

[–] Posadas@hexbear.net 50 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This says a lot about our society (legitimately).

[–] MoonMelon@lemmy.ml 69 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's not fully American until his widow gets denied death benefits.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 63 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"Your husband's death was not service related"

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

hope she sues and some football coach has to sit in front of a judge and claim that football games are war

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 31 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

imo, it's a calculated decision by leadership. the purpose of the spectacle is to distract and deflect examination of leadership. to have this happen within the focal point of the spectacle invites examination of leadership, so it must be disregarded and the show must go on.

they don't even have the benefit of it being a moment hijacked by "terrorists" where they can create an enemy. it's just literally "this is how incompetent the people in power are. we will sacrifice our devotees for less than nothing." the longer the moment lasts the more dangerous it is.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 67 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's hilarious that they had a dude fucking die during the opening festivities and they still went forward with the game

[–] miz@hexbear.net 65 points 3 days ago (2 children)

imagine if they just dug an unmarked grave on the field next to where he landed and then rolled the turf back over it

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 38 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They waited like 10 minutes. Football is more important than human life obviously

[–] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 37 points 3 days ago (11 children)

This is why I hate football. No hate for most average fans, but many of the football people I knew practically made it a religion, and I hated that. I recognize that it can be appreciated in a healthy fashion, but I will not be partaking.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 30 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Also hate for most average fans tbh, football shouldn't exist

[–] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I have more beef with the sport than the fans. It's hella dangerous for people involved, and people rarely come out of it without permanent injuries or health problems. But the average fan is distanced from that part and don't think about it as much.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I have about as much regard for a football fan as someone who enjoyed the Roman coliseum and seeing slaves get mauled by tigers. It's the modern equivelant

[–] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I feel that more about fighting sports. MMA and boxing can get really brutal, and I can't watch them.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I'd have to go back and look at the exact statistic, but IIRC it's something like football had more deaths on the field in the last decade than all combat sports combined for the last 100 years. Like your son is more likely to die playing high school football than he is getting deliberately punched/kicked in the head (not that minors should be doing combat sports).

Not only football, it's the Marvel Civil War of football games

Air Force

yet falls to death

ironicat

When even the ropes are causing crashes at football games, might be a sign your military prowess is hanging by a thread. No wonder Navy lost the game (and the war too).

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 12 points 2 days ago

They couldn't show a terrorist getting executed on tv and so mad that they showed a terrorist dying on tv anyway.

[–] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 48 points 3 days ago (1 children)

the show must go on but not for that guy

[–] CredibleBattery@hexbear.net 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

what if they weren't actually handling his corpse to stage his death.

what if his ejection seat worked a little too well and he was coming down just now

The 10 min wait is the only difference between our world and idiocracy. Like the movie has the several of the workers in the Colosseum dying and the crowd just cheers lol

[–] Mihr@lemmygrad.ml 23 points 3 days ago

I mean in the vid from last night the cheerleaders are looking over at his corpse behind their should and half assedly shaking their pompoms still.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 29 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Aside from career serial killer getting his due, those type of decisions pop up in train operations (especially in japan), i dont think there is any reasonable time frame outside of “be done with it”, when it’s 10000s people waiting. well worse that it’s for entertainment, but still, this sort of stuff (time-constrained disrespect for the dead i mean) happens a lot, the society just hides it from you well.

*and that ignoring big corpos protocols for handling dead workers

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 41 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

japan is a ridiculous place, but a train delay is logistically a whole problem theoretically affecting 10s of millions of people as it cascades.

this is a televised american football game of two trash teams where the broadcaster forces play to stop routinely for +15 "TV timeouts" so the folks at home to be told about a new type of bacon flavored toothpaste. the end time of an american football game has like 30-45 minutes of flex to it. there is no logistical problem with taking a delay. it is entirely a strategy to paper over it and diminish how much of a screw up it was. that dude free fell the entire height of the stadium. he didn't slip the last 20 feet and land bad, but i guarantee any mention of it will frame it that way. lots of emphasis that he didn't die on the field immediately, but instead was pronounced dead later at a facility. the way disney does when somebody gets killed at one of their theme parks.

Pete Hegseth got that live execution anyway I see

Also, maybe this convinced some people to not join the us military
