There has only ever been one fatal mountain lion attack in the entire history of Utah

Illinoisian here

I used to enjoy hiking a lot when I was younger. I'd just go wherever. Private property. Sometimes reservations or parks but just wherever.

And I would occasionally come across some deer. Majestic animals. Also the bucks are huge.

I mean. I don't think people realize how big these animals are. Pure muscle.

They aren't as big as a horse but not that much smaller. Like a little smaller than caribou.

I was always scared of the bucks.

In the winter (mating season and hunting season), they do get pretty territorial. And I had heard of urban legend stories that they would attack women on their period. Idk if that's true but if one of them took a run at you, yeah they would fuck you up. Impale you. Stomp you.

They got cute faces but just avoid them. Especially in the winter.

It's like our version of a smaller moose.

Idk if this statistics includes attacks only or car accidents.

They certainly cause a lot of fatal car accidents in the rural areas too.

The White Tailed Deer in the yellow states is not from the animal directly attacking people, it's from the dumb motherfucker stepping out into the road way and standing there as you're driving 70 mph on the freeway.

[–] restingOface@quokk.au 12 points 18 hours ago

Deer is just chilling and minding its own business when some dumb motherfucker comes driving 70 mph into it

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Or like my buddy's ex, she was driving and one of them motherfuckers just jumped into her driver's side window. She was in the hospital for days, the deer limped off into the woods, and we were cleaning glass and deer blood out of her vehicle for a while.

[–] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 5 points 16 hours ago

If it makes you feel better, there's a good chance the deer died from those injuries. Between blood loss, infections, and whatever physical injuries, nature is not very forgiving.

[–] GiantChickDicks@lemmy.ml 3 points 15 hours ago

While it's rarely life-threatening, whitetail deer do sometimes attack people. Once they've got you down they batter you with their front legs. It looks really funny, but it can be serious.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I was about to ask if that was the case, because I've never heard of one attacking anyone.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

The bucks can get a little rambunctious during mating season, but getting charged by a deer isn't quite in the same league as, say, a moose.

Me, I'm more taking exception to the copperhead zone, there. You are exceedingly unlikely to die if you're bitten by a copperhead. These are the most weaksauce of all vipers and the least dangerous venomous snake found in North America. I think you'll have a much more miserable time of it if you happen to get tagged by a timber rattlesnake, which encompasses all of the copperhead's range as depicted by that map and also continues quite a bit further, as far north as New York and as far west as eastern Oklahoma and Texas.

Furthermore, I think the chances of being eaten by a Great White in Delaware or Maryland are pretty overblown. The Maryland number one should probably also be the timber rattler or possibly black bears, especially in the western portion, and Washington DC drivers in the east. Similar with Delaware, where the most aggressive wildlife are probably the Juggalos.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Maryland should be a brown recluse, or one of their dozens of excitingly terrifying land critters.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world -1 points 16 hours ago

Maybe those snake head fish things there was apparently an epidemic of a number of years back.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 3 points 19 hours ago

Copperhead probably edges it out because they're more common

[–] Hapankaali@lemmy.world 20 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Pretty sure it should be "human" in each of these states.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

Just ‘Gun’ in white and leave the whole map blank.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 3 points 12 hours ago

Hogs are scary AF!

[–] Yew@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

Mountain lions kill almost nobody.

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 2 points 12 hours ago

MD here, very few sharks in Cumberland, great, white or otherwise.

[–] DragonAce@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

In Georgia you're more likely to be killed by a rattle snake than by an alligator.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago

White tailed deer: "Hey kid, you want a cigarette? No? That's OK. Say, you mind if I just sit here next to you and smoke, then?"

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 18 hours ago

FL has tons of things that will kill you besides gators, even if you take away the most dangerous one "Florida man". Gators aren't as much of a problem as rattlesnakes or water moccasins in my experience. Or the black/brown recluse spiders, those fuckers are everywhere.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 15 hours ago

Those cotton mouths in Louisiana have got to be more dangerous than alligators.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

Do a lot of people die from alligators?

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Not many:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_alligator_attacks_in_the_United_States

They are everywhere in parts of Florida and Louisiana, though. When I was out walking the dog, I'd see them scurry across the street, or scamper into nearby bogs/lakes. You definitely have to watch out for them.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Rule of thumb in Florida: if you can't see the bottom of a body of water, there's a gator in there.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

And all around it! If you can see water, gators can get there.

One night, a bug gator spotted us, ran away and just started tearing up a neighbor’s patio trying to hide. I kept thinking they would open the door and find it right there.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

You can make a decent living wrangling gators from pools & golf courses. My dad had a "Gator Guy" to handle them.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 15 hours ago

I wouldn't think so, they aren't as aggressive as crocodiles

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Generally only if you're incredibly stupid. Small children you have to watch tho.

[–] TheGoldenV@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Black bears for MN? Not Timberwolf? Black bears run from you if given the chance.

[–] GiantChickDicks@lemmy.ml 4 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

There has only been one fatal wolf attack in the US in recorded history. Any attacks by wolves are extremely rare, as most are quite way of people. I'd assume that's why they aren't included.

[–] Yew@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Beauty and the Beast (1991) contains TWO wolf attack scenes. Are you telling me that Disney didn't research nature correctly?

[–] GiantChickDicks@lemmy.ml 1 points 8 hours ago

To be fair, Beauty and the Beast was set in France.

Sorry for being a pedantic shit, because you made me giggle.

[–] mitchty@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 16 hours ago

Mama black bears will kill you dead if you’re by the baby or in the area code of it’s existence. They’re not timid in mom mode.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

We definitely got great white sharks on the west coast

[–] Maiq@piefed.zip 1 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

7 of those animals are in my state.

Doh, meant to reply to OP...
