I remember that. It was so annoying. Her brand smelled awful. The ones I smoked were way better.

When I was a kid my parents didn’t let me use a lighter to light fireworks so they gave me a lit cigarette instead.

[–] gastroglizzy@piefed.social 34 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Me too. "It lasts a lot longer and isn't nearly as dangerous since it isn't an open flame," they told me.

[–] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I once found a full pack of cigarettes on the ground at age ~10. I quickly figured out that lighting it on fire and using the cigarette to set off fireworks was so much easier than using a lighter. I didn't even think of smoking it, I just left it lit on the ground and used it as a lighter.

I didn't understand why my parents were so worried when they found out lol.

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They sell punk for this. They look like incense sticks without any scent. Just a smoldering slow burning stick, used to light fireworks with.

[–] Test_Tickles@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

They do now. For those of us that still speak the old magic, we know that a lit cigarette was the original punk.

[–] Canajan@piefed.ca 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Mosquito coils work excellent as well.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

Such a nice smell too! 😫🤢

Ha this is definitely something that happened to me.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Good God that kid looks like me. I had that same atrocious bowl cut.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

there were thousands of us.

the 70s were a cruel time.

[–] Doom@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

70s? That look held on until the early 80s. If you know you know.

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 40 points 3 days ago (24 children)

I was second-hand smoking two packs a day until I was 13 (when my mom got lung cancer). But back then, every kid I knew was doing the same. Now, seeing people smoking is a relatively rare occurrence.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And smoking in bed 🛏️ 🚬

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

hotboxing while smoking in the car with the windows rolled up because it was cold, hot, or raining lol. used to get such wicked headaches from the car jfc

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

I'm so much less prone to motion sickness nowadays, maybe that's the reason 😅

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago

Oh god that must have sucked and sorry about your mom.

Man, to a non-smoker the world must have smelled like ass back then.

My dad was made to quit by my mum in 1973 when they had their first. By my birth in 77 I was really only around smokers at parties or friends houses.

Still didn't stop me picking up the habit mind you, but I course corrected lol

[–] lukaro@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I was a grown ass adult before I knew how awful cigarettes smelled simply because I was always surrounded by smoke I just thought that was how the world smelled.

[–] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I knew it stank, hated that shit growing up. But I didn't realize just how fucking godawful it was until I moved out. My stuff reeked for months, or years if it was stored.

I'm old enough to remember coming home from bars with my clothes reeking, even though I never smoked myself.

[–] Fredselfish@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 days ago

Yep they smoke with windows rolled up in the cars, and in the house. Hell it was rare to find someone who didn't smoke. Then they got all shocked when we all picked up the habit as well when we got old enough to do so.

Luckily for my kids I quit when they were young and yeah I don't really know anyone who smokes cigarettes anymore.

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Where I grew up you could smoke in bars when I was in high-school. Not only was I allowed to go in but the place was also absolutely full of cigarette smoke. Many of those basement bars shut down completely after one caught fire a few years ago. It was a huge scandal

[–] Test_Tickles@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bars? You little whippersnapper. There was a time when every table had an ashtray. Every table everywhere: restaurants, stores, the checkout line at the gas station, public transportation...

And I am not talking about smoking sections, that came later. I'm talking about people with lit cigarettes being as ubiquitous as people on cellphones today.

I'll never forget the old lady i saw as a child walking the grocery store with a lit cigarette hanging on her lip. Completely socially acceptable behavior at the time.

[–] medem@lemmy.wtf 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

'A relatively rare occurrence'?? I envy you, may I ask where you live? (definitely not in central Europe or the Middle East).

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

We Americans have many, many faults, but one thing we've actually been pretty good about is cutting back on smoking. When I was a kid everyone smoked, and now it's pretty rare.

I think part of it is actually an unexpected benefit of capitalism. Restaurants and bars used to fight indoor smoking bans tooth and nail because all their cust6were smokers and they didn't want to lose them. But then when the bans would happen, business actually increased - especially for bars. Turned out lots of people wanted to be able to grab a drink after work but didn't want to go home smelling like cigarettes.

So now business groups other than big tobacco support the bans, which has resulted in a huge decline of social smoking.

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

US, New York state. My county banned smoking indoors before the state did. For a while you would see groups of people outside smoking but now it's the often just one or two if there's any. Of course, the smell of weed is everywhere now, so there's that.

I like how they have the same haircut

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The Dorothy Hamill cut. It was huge after the '76 Olympics:

I had a crush on Susan, the new girl in the 4th grade, a redhead with that cut. I threw up on her shoes, once. She never talked to me.

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

It was one of six you could choose from back then. That was it. Only six haircuts to choose from. /s

That leather coat mom is wearing is fucking fire. Wonder how much a real leather jacket like that would cost today?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Taking a drag off it when she isn't looking. Ahh, memories.

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

From his facial expression and the way he’s staring at her leg, he seems to calculating how many seconds of “accidental” contact with the cigarette it would take for her to notice.

[–] Ninja876@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I remember @ 7-8yo going to the local convenience store with a note to buy my mom cigarettes.

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I imagine any adults with poor handwriting did not benefit from this cigarette home delivery system

"Nice try, Timmy. You clearly wrote that note yourself"

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

When I was a kid in the '70s there were cigarette vending machines everywhere. If you wanted to smoke, you could smoke.

[–] saimen@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

In the 90s they still were there

How the hell could someone smoke cigs in the 70's and not be able to grasp it in their lips while using both hands?

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not lady like. That's old man smoking.
