The greatest disrespect I've endured is having my pictures fed to generative AI by my mother.

[–] maturelemontree@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I asked my mom about something in our childhood and instead of reminiscing, she sent me a copy pasted AI response.

[–] pulsey@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago

Thats just insulting

[–] Stefan_S_from_H@piefed.zip 66 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I don't want to assume that everybody is dumb. This is a shitty way to be part of a society. But with LLM AI chatbots, people are constantly announcing their stupidity. It hurts my brain. This isn't right.

COVID-19 was bad enough. Do we really need another indicator of low intelligence?

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

This one crosses generational and political lines much more so than anti-vaxxers and the nanobots-in-the-masks crowd.

One way to fight it might be to politicize it, ironically enough, with Trump's approval under 30% on many issues, if we can label AI support as MAGA, that might slow the advance.

In my town, MAGA supports data centers "because jobs." Fucking idiots don't know how few people it takes to babysit computers. The jobs are low-paying security, and a few IT staff, with the bulk of the work done off-site from other states.

[–] Stefan_S_from_H@piefed.zip 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The problem is that there's more AI than just LLM AI.

Training a machine learning algorithm on a few thousand x-ray images doesn't need multiple data centers or stealing copyrighted works.

Beating you in chess and go is possible without burning fossil fuels.

agreed, but that does not seem to be the way it is being used colloquially.

At the same time, people staunchly resistant to technological advances without a hint of nuance, not historically the sharpest tools.

There's a middle road where the technology can be useful but the economic system pushing it is cancerous.

[–] Stefan_S_from_H@piefed.zip 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You anger more people if you walk in the middle of the road.

I remember criticizing people who were against AI in games. They are just calling everything AI, no matter what. They didn't like to think for themselves, too.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

i mean i don't particularly enjoy games with generative AI stuff (as an example, with a few exceptions roguelike/lite is not my genre). like, the random little fetch quests you'd get in skyrim were not the best, but they would get you out and exploring new areas of the world (things you'd miss if you just did main storylines).

like, i can only minecraft so much. i like stuff that is personally crafted much more than stuff that is infinitely replayable but requires randomizers.

[–] Stefan_S_from_H@piefed.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Enemies in games use AI. I remember how proud developers were when their enemies started to search for cover when shot at.

One big part of AI research was always games.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

You might like minecraft modpacks with quest lines and a linear progress then; i barelly play vanilla anymore since i discovered 'em

[–] NuanceDemon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 days ago

Yeahhh but anybody who is harshly in any direction hasn't thought about it enough.

Some exceptions but fewer than you'd think.

[–] Geodes_n_Gems@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago

It's not even idiocy, it's sometimes just bot bothering to do proper research by oneself.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

I wouldn't call it stupidity, they're more cripplingly naive.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 46 points 2 days ago

I had, in a discussion about administration organization layers, someone that litterly did that. Constantly "Chat GPT also made that point" "to that chat gpt says that" omfg sooo annoying and took the entire motivation from me

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Hey it's me at the office with my coworkers

[–] sidebro@lemmy.zip 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Happened to me just this week. Company has the problem that too many people report them to national board of consumer disputes. Copilot offered management a solution, a line that employees can call for advice if the customer threatens to sue and/or report.

Funny thing is, most reports are because AI told customer to report.

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

A whole cycle of ai talking to ai

[–] sidebro@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

The future is here

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oof, same. It's scary that it's all the engineers at my office, I'd think they'd know better

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeeep, I don't understand it. I've always known some people were only in tech for the money rather than the genuine interest in software but apparently it's most people given how most of my coworkers excitedly boast about not writing any code in weeks. Writing code is the only fun part of being a developer :(

[–] zoltanshields@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

It's really disheartening. I originally pursued tech for the money but I fell in love with it as a sort of creative outlet a few years into my career. I actually WANT to make new tools but my coworkers immediately outsourced their brains and come asking me for help because the code they got from copilot (and didn't test) is breaking something in production.

[–] Edge004@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Yes, it drives me nuts as an engineer seeing other engineers use copilot, especially the ones who should absolutely know better

[–] PIxelSerg404@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

lemme ask chat gpt, grok, gemini. screw that i ask the shadow man inside my walls he may not know everything but he be chill like that

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There's always tarot cards and astrology, the old standbys.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Hey tarot, what should i have for dinner tonight?

seven of cups. you want to try the new soup buffet?

ten of wands. they have good fries apparently

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Something something Shat Skibidi, no idea, didn't ask an AI.

[–] Luccus@feddit.org 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"You where right, Chatty said the same thing!"

Why even bother asking me then?

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 2 points 2 days ago

Chatty told me to ask you!

[–] Korne127@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I guess it's just the same as googling something without having to click on all the links and find the information beyond AI slop… funny how AI polluting the internet itself can lead to it being used more

[–] Killer57@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The way I've found it, is like asking Google questions I used to be able to, only now it doesn't know what the hell I'm talking about, and gives me the answer it thinks will make me happy, doesn't mean the answer is right in any credible way, just that the answer will make me happy.

[–] Obituarykidney@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Almost like it's by design

[–] OddMinus1@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As a dev, I don't know. We've been open about googling every little thing for a long time, so acknowledging that LLMs often find an answer quicker than navigating incomplete documentations or decade-old StackOverflow threads seems fine.

[–] chewypoops@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly, I've just learned not to engage the luddites on this one. If you're opposing mass-unemployment, I'm with you, but if you're just so anti-AI that you're antisocial to people who use AI, I just ignore. I learned a long time ago not to argue with stupid people.

AI chatbots are essentially just a very powerful search engine, and I don't fault anyone if they find a way to use it effectively.

There's a good chance that someone will respond to me here to tell me that AIs hallucinate everything and serve zero purpose, and I won't engage because even they know they're wrong, that's why they're so outspoken against AI.

I am looking forward to when the anti-AI people remember that the actual enemy is Capitalism.

[–] Hiro8811@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The problem isn't the hallucinations, the problem is the social and environmental impacts.

Any comfort western countries have is thanks to slaves in third world countries, now western countries see the capitalism consequences. But people have to take accountability for their decisions, id you drive a car you pollute, if you smoke you pollute and worsen your health, everything has a price, just because you can't see it or it doesn't mean it's not there.

[–] chewypoops@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

That's a lot of words to say exactly what I was already saying: That the problem is capitalism.

Yes, I understand that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. We're still trapped in a capitalist society, so what do you want people to do? Just stop functioning entirely?
