Showering every day is bourgeois degeneracy!

But seriously, people, follow the advice of your fellow Brazilians, showering is good for you and for others around you. Shower at least 2 times a day, comrades. And I don't want to hear winter as an excuse.

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 96 points 3 days ago

do not get addicted to showering every day, it will take hold of you and that water could have been used for data centers

[–] D61@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Turns out there is no "health benefit" to "feeling good".

I shower every night before bed because it's nice, helps me relax, and I feel greasy if I don't. My wife showers once a week because that's what works for her. Do what you want.

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 36 points 2 days ago (1 children)

showering is virtue signalling

As a naturally sweaty person, the health benefit of daily showering is that my spouse doesn't make me sleep outside in a makeshift nest.

nest

Everyone here seems to believe body odour is universally a bad thing that's objectively disgusting. Smells are mostly conditioning, Europeans will delight themselves smelling cheeses that would make Asian people puke, we add literal rotten sour grapes to every single salad we eat, and fuck, the smell of WET CARDBOARD induces hunger into people because we're conditioned to associate it with pizza in a cardboard delivery box. My ex used to sniff my balls after sweaty days because she loved the smell and my current girlfriend finds it nice to smell my armpits in the morning, and I'll have you know her pussy smells of heaven to me.

Normalizing body odour does not mean "well, unfortunately it's a natural thing, so we should just shut up and deal with stinky people for the rest of history", it means "once people get used to a certain degree of body odour on each other we won't notice it and/or consider it a bad thing, and it would imply benefits for skincare for many". Nobody is trying to implement a fucking shower ban, shower as much as you want, there is simply a diversity of people with a diversity of bodies who smell more, smell less, and have different skins which require different routines.

This take is objectively correct, and whoever disagrees because "ew" is a child who refuses to critically examine social conditioning on themselves.

Your wife smelling your balls is fine.

I don't want to smell your balls.

[–] Feed_el_Castro@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Don't make me tap the sign:

whoever disagrees because "ew" is a child who refuses to critically examine social conditioning on themselves.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I don't want to listen to you play music out loud on your phone either.

It's not ew, it's annoying. It's an outside imposition on my senses that I don't want.

[–] Feed_el_Castro@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I gave you a well-reasoned comment regarding social conditioning of smells. Living in community implies a ton of impositions, such as being subjected to seeing how people choose to dress and cut their hair, which I hope you don't see as annoying too. If the best response you have is "but I'ont wanna", I don't have much else to reply to you. Keep complaining about how ugly ripped jeans are or something.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Living in community implies a ton of impositions,

And one of those impositions is bathing! If we don't regularly bathe, the community smells like unwashed buttholes and sweaty balls.

Some people would get used to it, but I wouldn't, because I get overstimulated by being assailed by too many different sensorial experiences at the same time. It's not even these specific smells that are bad, per se, I just prefer to smell nothing when I'm in public because it's already stressful enough (although the factor of "this smell comes from a person" does make it more stressful). So, I happen to like this imposition. Getting rid of it would make it hard for me to be in crowds.

People wearing perfume also bother me, but society has decided those smells are okay, so I'm out of luck.

Does everyone here genuinely dislike the scent of their partners? I really don't get it

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

there's a difference between scent and stank

[–] Feed_el_Castro@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

"Stank" is to "scent" what "full-scale invasion" is to "military action"

[–] Flyberius@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

I don't think so, I just think the bluntness of your comment was pure gold.

[–] TUMBLE_BUS@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

I do in small amounts but I wouldn't exactly want my partner to jump into bed with me after a week of no bathing. I have my limits.

[–] Flyberius@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Haha. That was some incredible over sharing. I like sweaty pits too.

This whole line of argument takes it as a given that no one should be cleaner than medically necessary. Bathe you dirty animals! Don't you like to feel clean? Isn't the grime itchy? Much of modernity sucks shit actually but modern sanitation and hygiene are genuine triumphs over the conditions of the past! Use them!

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

We need that water for the datacenters

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 31 points 2 days ago

It isn't performative if there is a psychological benefit. Which you know, there definitely is.

What is going on in this thread

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The same thing that happens every time: People talking past eachother because they've decided the other is part of an outgroup and thus they must assume the worst of all they say. This time its really funny because its about showering.

[–] PaulSmackage@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Shout out to stacking rocks, my favourite activity.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Just dont do it near streams of water

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 2 days ago

huh, that's the best and most succinct explanation of internet slap fights i've seen

Still remember the first time I found out there were people who didn't wash regularly

I was an effete boy of 8, one who washed twice a day and when I told my classmates that, I was told that I was "gay" for liking to be clean

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago

It's only gay if you wash your butthole.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

i bet you washed your hands too. like some kind of weirdo who doesn't follow RFK's Podcast where we learn that regular sanitation and hygiene were invented by Big Shower.

Nothing beats showering in the evening and then lying in a clean bed fully naked, if I go to sleep unshowered it feels kinda yucky.

How tf you smelling like garbage after 24 hours? If you got sweaty that’s one thing but one day doesn’t turn ya sedentary ass into actual trash

Gonna show my ass on this one but I shower once a week, it's bad I know, it doesn't help that the hot water is busted in the house when I turn it on the pressure is low in my place.

[–] regul@hexbear.net 39 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I was waiting for someone to volunteer how little they shower. I know y'all nasty.

Humans have odors and stigmatizing them is doing the work of capitalism.

[–] TUMBLE_BUS@hexbear.net 51 points 3 days ago (15 children)

Nah, I disagree. Most human cultures have practiced regular or semi-regular bathing , to different extents, but this whole idea that we just naturally smell fine in our "state of nature" is largely BS. The whole idea that medieval people only bathed once a year is misinfo, most large medieval towns had bathhouses and we have illustrations of people bathing in rivers and ponds from that period. Even our paleolithic ancestors probably dipped themselves in rivers after a hot day so they don't stink up the longhouse.

What an absolutely reactionary and uninformed take. Like, showering everyday probably doesn't have a direct health benefit, and in fact it is damaging to your hair to shampoo it every day, but perfumes, unguents, bathing habits, and general cleaniness, as well as a general public disagreement with strong body odors has been a thing since well before capitalism has been a thing.

There is a good goddamn reason that frankincense and myrrh were part of the royal gifts supposedly given to the infant Jesus by the wise men. They were ritual perfumes, as good or different smells that have been associated with divinity forever. Unfortunately, the stigmatization of smell has much less to do with capitalism, and much more to do with enculturated practices that extend far deeper than capitalism. Capitalism absolutely takes advantage of that stigmatization, but it is not the cause of it, which means that socialism is simply the first step in addressing it, not a solution in of itself.

This has been known for a while. Showering daily is, if anything, kinda odd compared to most humans unless you actually get dirty.
