Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

*looks at phone

People died getting the raw materials out of the ground to make this. Many of their bodies were just left in the ground, some were children. Many others died of disease from becoming contaminated with by-products of the purification process.

People literally died to make this device and it's going to be obsolete in few months ostensibly for security reasons, but also so I'll be forced to buy a new phone.

Long live the Orphan Crushing Machine.

[–] cadmiumsandbox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

oh but u see its very expensive to recycle so we gotta keep crushing orphans. u wouldnt want ur iphone to be $5000 right

tbh they gonna keep increasing prices and not do anything differently so. i love the world

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

frankly the world would be better if smartphones cost 5000$ but then also lasted 15-20 years

[–] cadmiumsandbox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

we all know that no matter what they cost, they wont be built to last under capitalism. my 10 year old phone works just fine but cant install any modern apps. my 5 year old phone works just fine, and so many major banking and even government apps no longer work. bc we live in hell, we have to have a new phone with worse featureset, more lockdowns, that last even less and cost more bc "security" or whatever the fuck. i hope someday this changes

till then i try my very best to use fdroid for most apps (ofc minus banking and government bc we live in hell)

Get yourself a fairphone next time you need a smartphone. They're not perfect, but they've tried to disentangle their supplier chain from the orphan crushing machine as much as possible.

I do this for the amount of effort that went into the packaging for most products that immediately gets thrown in the bin. Then there's the life-cycle of the paper towel...

[–] NightmareQueenJune@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Buuuut you notice good/bad paper towels! The same goes for toilet paper.

[–] Pollo_Jack@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What is really fucked is that everyone knows what good tp feels like. Yet, some companies choose to make awful tp to save money. Don't hit me with it is cheaper to make. No, you save a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a cent using single ply compared to two ply because most of the cost is in shipping the tp.

Toilet paper in public places doesn't suck because every building and business owner is a cheapskate. Toilet paper in public restrooms sucks because if it doesn't, people steal it.

Somehow I got watching a plastic clamshell manufacturer on Instagram. It's fascinating and terrible.

I like reading instructions for the simplest things. I go to the warning section and I imagine that someone had to type out text to not submerge the mechanical part of the my mini food processor because someone decided it was a good idea to wash a mini food processor by submerging it in water.

[–] Sciaphobia@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What are you supposed to submerge it in then? Fire? Checkmate.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago

Honestly, how else can you be sure it's sanitary?

Like UV light

[–] tyler@programming.dev 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well you can definitely wash it by submerging it. The warning was probably about washing it while it was plugged in. I once washed a keyboard in the dishwasher. Worked perfectly fine afterwards. You just have to make sure it gets dried and there’s no corrosion forming.

[–] bottleofchips@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That’s…don’t….do not do that

[–] unmagical@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's generally fine. Some medical grade keebs are specifically designed to be cleaned in such conditions as well. If you run it just with water and let it fully dry there's nothing that's gonna short it, and it should still be enough to remove the gunk and sanitize it.

[–] autriyo@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wouldn't bank on mechanical key switches to dry out while they're assembled. A membrane keyboard would probably be fine though.

Some medical grade keebs are specifically designed

We know as a species how to do a lot of stuff we don't normally do because there's no market. In this particular case you can get one of those keyboards starting at around $100. I wonder how many of them are never washed because the doctor's office doesn't have a keyboard dishwasher installed?

I'm pissed off now thinking the amount of wasted time and effort that exists in products and that we have the pleasure of paying for it all when buying them—then half of the time it's made like shit upon release! All that time and effort and the product is fucking awful. Great work everyone.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, we just slap it together out of spare parts lying around, make it look like a decent product even though we messed every production step up, then ship it, with no wrap.

[–] autriyo@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

But then someone else put thought into the spare parts...

[–] discocactus@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Now think about the software...

[–] blackshirt@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Which one?

The old way of doing software like putting a whole system into 64kb of ram (voyager I, Old consoles...) or today's bloat (500Mb for an app to adjust my earbuds, looking at you Anker Soundcore ಠ_ಠ )

Mercy Street played during a scene in Halt and Catch Fire that I was watching and it really made me feel this. There really must (as feature in the show) be arguments happening all the time, at every level, for even the most insignificant of things. To realize thought and intentionality are hewn into everything makes me feel connected to the world in a way I wasn't previously aware of. Maybe it should have been obvious but I've spent a decade watching the world careen side-to-side. Its nice to think someone cared about my lamp and my table and my lunch.

Looking down on empty streets, all she can see Are the dreams all made solid, are the dreams made real All of the buildings, all of the cars Were once just a dream, in somebody's head

I recommend the book The Hardware Hacker by the legendary Andrew "Bunnie" Huang. Really gets into a lot of this stuff.
