Saudi Arabia is evil, but perhaps this is the only way to teach Americans the error of their ways

They will betray us

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I dunno, the only way they could seemingly betray paramount is to put watchable shows on it.

Will? Did auto-correct not fix it to have?

[–] FE80@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

It's OK, the other 50.5% is owned by Israel.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 34 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I’m so happy everything in the world is gonna be owned by 5 people and 2 countries.

They are going to run this into the ground. They have no idea how art works other than they want to buy the stuff people are watching.

MBS is Trump with more murder and less term limits

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 2 days ago

*Fewer

Sorry had to do it.

[–] Rat_in_a_hat@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

More murder only because we know about it! And only if you don't consider the people murdered by Trump's regime (like ICE murders and the Iranian school bombing).

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 46 points 3 days ago (6 children)

This has been going on for awhile. I’ve said it a few times. Saudi Arabia has been quietly buying up a ton of companies along with various Trump allies and sometimes outrighting funding those Trump ally companies.

They invest in many Trump related companies as well as partnering with Russia’s Soverign Weath Fund.

Everyone is so worried about China, they are letting Saudia Arabia buy up everything behind the scenes.

I would trust a government that kills reporters, hangs out with Epstein, or likely helped fund 9/11 terrorist attacks.

There’s a list of PIF investments in Wikipedia. PIF

It is honestly pretty funny that they are currently incapable at protecting themselves even with top of the line equipment. They've also spent way too much money on completely useless megaprojects, failed to buy up large swaths of Arizona land for alfalfa, and haven't built any large internal industries to transition them away from their status as a petrostate aside from a few luxury electric car manufacturing plants.

Recommend Arabs at War: Military Effectiveness, 1948-1991 (Studies in War, Society, and the Military) by Pollack

There are many reasons; one of them is that Arab forces often lie to their commanders so that they have very poor situational awareness, leading to a cascade of further poor decisions in war.

This is because you can and will be executed for failure.

Unfortunately, you can also be executed for being too competent, which can be seen as threatening to your superiors.

Also, maintenance. And sand. I hate sand.

There are many other factors and exceptions, depending on when and where.

The Gulf States are (IMO) facing the problem that they need a way to stay relevant as oil (or their geopolitical position where they get to buy security with oil) becomes obsolete but putting large-scale productive capital in their countries is going to automatically empower the people manning, operating, supplying and otherwise getting actual production out of said capital (which is to say the bourgeoisie and the proletariat). For a petrostate largely run along aristocratic lines that's a problem, because the new economic forces created by this transition will demand a political voice and Saudi aristocrats absolutely don't want to give them that. Industrialization was (with some twists and turns) good for European countries, but look what it did to European nobility. This is also why they don't create an effective army; without a strong, popular civilian authority (which none of them have) nothing will stop it from seizing power. Their big problem here is that you can't modernize in half-measures; you have to go all-in or not because the first step will drag you the rest of the way, probably violently if you resist. Other third world dictators for the most part have this problem too, but while they are forced to deal with it today Gulf monarchies are buying time with oil so they get to deal with it tomorrow. Fundamentally their behavior makes more sense when you realize that they're trying to thread a needle through a hole that doesn't exist.

And that's enough Karl Marx for one day I think. Remember, the answer is always communism.

Who bailed Elon out and helped him buy Twitter? Who do you think Trump was selling those fucking cases full of classified Intel to? It's so sad watching this all play out with nothing to do about it.

Because of course nothing can go wrong with that.

On the one hand we could imagine them clamping down on riske material and promote islamicism, but to be real having lived in the gulf for many years they care more about money than anything else. So prepare for more neoliberal enshittification.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 9 points 4 days ago

Saudi Arabia and UAE are absolutely not going to be promoting Islamism (Qatar is more complicated). Islamists are the biggest enemies of entrenched authoritarian regimes in most of the Middle East, so even ones with a veneer of religion are trying hard to gain legitimacy as secular nationalist dictators. For example remember that one story about the UAE being like "Britain harbors dangerous islamists? The translation here is "this foreign liberal democracy is harboring enemies of my authoritarian regime." If anything both of them (but probably not (Qatar) are already pushing for more bellicose US policy in the Middle East, because they're vassal regimed whose survival depends on the continued interest of their imperial masters.

At least no more Arabs as the bad guys in Hollywood, right? right?

[–] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 37 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Why do people who complain about Muslims want to give our industries away to Islamic countries?

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They only dislike Muslims who aren't billionaires.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

They dislike everyone but their own, but they still get hard-ons for billionaires.

[–] Master167@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

Because there's money to be made by looking the other way. The "revolving door" is open to high level government bureaucrats and they want their payday after their "public service"

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 days ago

Power is the only real religion.

[–] DukeNukem@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Saudi Arabia also bought EA, which wasn't a great company to begin with.

[–] 13igtyme@startrek.website 1 points 2 days ago

Imagine if the didn't back out the Embracer deal when they were buying up all the indie companies. They could have rolled it all under EA and killed close to 40% of the market.

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 17 points 4 days ago (5 children)

I’m glad I cancelled paramount plus a while ago

[–] couldhavebeenyou@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago

I suggested boycotting them in a previous topic and got replied "whoa you want us to stop watching movies and tv??"

Same. I'd like to cancel again though, to show them!

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wish I could charge money to companies I hate.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

Just sending plausible invoices to large corporations works waaaaaay more often than you’d think. The only downside is that the penalties are severe if you’re caught. Have an exit strategy.

Where is reuters on this? This is right up their alley, I have to think the omission is on purpose as this is news.

[–] teslekova@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Can't be worse than the Ellisons. Changes nothing.

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sure it can't. Team Bonesaws And Islamist Petro-Monarchy can't possibly be worse.

[–] NEZ27@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Team Bonesaws is definitely worse than the Ellisons, but they're both in the Blight Against Humanity Hall of Fame.
