Fediverse vs Disinformation

2304 readers
360 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

Oh thank god. My gas and groceries will now be cheaper and they’ll release the Epstein files.

I keep seeing this image but I don’t know where it’s from. HALP

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago

Stop trying to make HALP happen, Gretchen.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

the film Mean Girls where the character is informing another character that her attempt to coin a phrase is never going to work.

Undertale Sans mentioned

The US has totally misunderstood how to use SI units.

[–] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago

It's another insane distraction from the pedo admin. Trumpy has the education of a 4th grader, so of course he wanted to use a name that is easier to say. "Super" is a word he knows and uses often. He can barely say the word "Artificial," so it makes sense he would have his team make up this stupid EO.

Maybe they'll rename the US to Super America next?

[–] Yeller_king@reddthat.com 8 points 2 days ago

Super Earth!

[–] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How's that lake America going?

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Apple Maps still shows the incorrect name for Lake Ontario, and the Gulf of Mexico.

However, CoMaps shows the correct names for both. Yay CoMaps FTW!!

That really just depends on the convention of whatever the mapping software is. Openstreetmap has a "name=*" block for places, but it can also have "official_name=*", in addition to many other language names. Generally, software to actually display the map isnt going to show all of the names cause that would be a mess, but it might show whatever is listed under "name=". If you are in a foreign country, though, you might also want the "name:(en)=".

Personally, my comaps is set to display "name:(en)=" and if that doesnt exist, fall back to whatever the local language is (what's in "name="). Honestly, I wish they could make it more configurable, so I could have it display both.

The convention in openstreetmaps is that "name=" is for what people who live there use/what's on physical signage. Since everyone still calls it "lake ontario" that name sticks. In places with legitimately different names from the people who live there, like Switzerland, they just do / names for each language.

Apple maps probably just provides the "official" name for everything. There's pros and cons to everything, and openstreetmap isnt exactly consistent with their stated methodology. Like openstreetmap uses the official name for "unnamed mountain" and not the nazi collaborator name that people actually use (not that I'm complaining), which they should technically be using according to their methodology.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

All very interesting. More configurability seems the way to go for OSM / CoMaps. AND what is the nazi collaborator name of "unnamed mountain"? I will gladly call it anything other than the nazi name, fyi.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_P%C3%A9tain

To be fair, they named it before he became a collaborator.

Apple just pulled the name off the map, Google still had the old name.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 1 points 2 days ago

Unnamed Mountain it is. Thanks for the history lesson! I'm sure the mountain itself is not to blame. And have to wonder if there is an indigenous name which would be unsullied, and historically prior to the name given by colonizers.

A wet turd has more intelligence than trump. So to him, everything is super intelligence.

[–] j5y7@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Has more intrinsic value too.

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Super High Intelligence Technology a.k.a. "SHIT".
We should make this the common term for it. (Seen somewhere on Mastodon)

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

I prefer Simulated Human Intelligence Technology

[–] opus86@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

I'm surprised he didn't want to call it Super Duper Intelligence.

[–] marcela@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago

By Trump IQ units we have had superintelligence since pocket calculators became a thing.

[–] mrmaplebar@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago
[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Ooh. Now our "Super-Intelligence" can launch "Hydrosonic" "Super-Duper Missiles"

[–] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Super Intelligence, as opposed to Super Trump Intelligence.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Which would be below average intelligence. Even a Super Trump would be an average idiot.

[–] Souvenir@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sorry. I was just making a joke about Trump having (an) STI, ie. Sexually Transmitted Infection.

As I had to explain the joke, it's clearly shit.

[–] DrPop@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Renaming something isn't going to change how people refer to it.

[–] Slashme@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well then they can stop using the inaccurate term "AI" and talk about LLMs, diffusion models, generative adversarial networks, etc.

[–] TheOctonaut@piefed.zip 2 points 2 days ago

If only there was a collective term for such things. A superset of them

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Week #88 he’s successfully diverting attention from the Files, and even Lemmy gobbles it up.

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yep, I had completely forgotten that other thing that we’ve been talking about daily for years. This dastardly new thing pushed the old thing right out of my brain.

[–] Snowclone@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

you're both right though.
