Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

Bollywood annually produces more than twice the amount of movies that Hollwood produces. They universally appeal to the lowest common denominator viewer, are overly long to offer a good "value proposition", the singalongs are unbearably cringe, overacting is rampant, as are tired tropes. Whether it be comedy, drama, or regional art pieces, it's just not good.

This opinion is so ignorant, gatekeepy and out of touch that I have no idea where to even begin.

It's rare I see a truly unpopular opinion (and not just unpopular in nerdy Western online spaces). 👌

Watch RRR and we can talk :)

Came to suggest this one, that movie was such a good time

Already did, my point stands. The action was stupid as hell. Again, it was overly long and overstayed its welcome. And it was so corny.

There's no cure for bad taste. The idea that someone could watch that movie and hate it is literally sad. Holy shit.

There has never been a good Hollywood movie. I believe this because I am willfully ignorant about anything not made by Disney.

Im not sure if I have actually ever seen one.

Had to upvote anyone criticizing something that widely liked. Mind you, I don't watch many myself because of language barriers and access.

But like others have said, I get what most of them try to do. And I do enjoy that kind of movie occasionally.

What I'm curious about is if it's the Bollywood spectacle movies are all you've run into, or if the more serious and restrained ones are just that rare. I know they exist, despite not being able to understand them.

Edit: had to look the name up, but I once saw Article 15. Didn't have subtitles or dubs, so I have no clue about the content, but it seemed to be a well crafted movie overall

I haven't seen many Indian movies but I have seen one that destroys your premise. RRR. That movie is absolutely fantastic on a number of levels.

Maybe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polite_Society_(film)? OK, it's not Indian but it's kind of equivalent with dances and stuff.

I think you missed the point.

All of those criticisms are the point - it's like they do B movies cranked to 11, and we're all in on it.

They're like eating the so-bad-for-you favorite food and enjoying it for what it is.

Can I eat/watch it every day? No. But occasionally it's fun to do.

My point is that calling them B movies is generous. I would rather spend all day at the DMV, have a tooth pulled, or work on my taxes. They are unwatchably, painfully, bad.

You just don't like fun movies. Their action scenes are a riot.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I would say they don't actually like movies. They said they hated RRR. I am not even sure how anyone with the slightest of open minds wouldn't like it. At least aspects of it

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm not much for movies, truthfully, with exceptions of course, but every Bollywood action flick I have seen was a fucking riotous spectacle and highly entertaining. There's something deeper wrong with that dude.
