Since lemmy is still pretty small, we'll be loose about what counts as a horror game.

Cyberdrmon from the original doom. Playing this at 2am as kid gave me occasional nightmares for years. 10/10, would recommend.

I was a wee lad, but the Butcher in Diablo 1 always got my heart going. “Ahh, fresh meat..”

Honestly I think these are the best kinds of answers to a question like this, something you thought was scary when you were little, even if it wasn't from a horror game

The Pinkies/Piggies/Demons from Doom and Doom II. I guess Doom qualifies as a horror game? Buy yeah, after playing a lot of Doom as a kid, I had a nightmare on Christmas eve that the pig demons ate Santa.

It’s probably always going to be Alien Isolation’s Xenomorph for me

Anyone played with the mic on? I didn't.

There was an 3d fps Aliens game (I think AvP 1) that scared the pants off me. Playing that game and having the aliens running across all surfaces out of nowhere was too tense for me. It actually ruined horror gaming for me for a long time because nothing else seemed scary after playing that.

I'm thinking about replaying RE4 VR. Went through it once - first time playing the game - and had a blast, but there's one enemy type that's really making me reconsider: the snakes that sometimes jump out of boxes. Brrrr!

Jesus I can't ever imagine playing a horror game in VR. I'd friggin' shit myself.

[–] Klear@piefed.world 1 points 1 day ago

Same, really. I don't play horror games a lot even faltscreen, but RE4 is more action than horror. It really isn't too bad.

It's just those damn snake jumpscares that get to me.

I think it was that red zombie that came back after you killed a regular zombie in the first RE (might have been just in the NGC remake).

Shivers in Vintage Story. Those things just move wrong

For me it's kind of hard to say. The Groom from Outlast really stuck with me a long time, but I think P.T.'s Lisa is the one I think of first when I think of scary

Used to be Pyramid Head, but now that I've grown up it's the bandaged guy from Mouthwashing. More horrifying than any monster could ever be

I don't know about the most, but I think the Girl in Resident Evil Requiem was the most recent one that got me. I know the Uktena in Uktena 64 got me the first time I played it. I want to say the Anglerfish in Anglerfish got me once or twice. Ooh, and the creature from FAITH Chapter 1.

The green, reptilian monsters that replace standard zombies later in Resident Evil 1 called Hunters... Those things jumping out of nowhere were crazy!

[–] storm_shadow@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

Alien Breed (top-down shooter) on Amiga had these insectoid queen aliens that would suddenly crawl into view and take up half the screen. Startled the shit out of me every time.

The AvP aliens and Diablo 1 Butcher are brilliant. But also would like to add two creatures from Dead Space: the wall snake, and the one who regenerates.

Motivation/spoilersThe wall snake is more of a surprise. But it is such a great setup. You walk into a corridor and you see a hole in the wall. You are very careful not to take your eyes off it. Then you exit, nothing happened. You ho on, do some other stuff, and you have forgotten all about it. Then bam you opened the door to the corridor but forgot about it, a snake grabs you and throws you arround, and you realize where you are.

And the regenerating one. Brilliant. You face it, start you usual thing, shoot the limbs, it goes down, nice. It fucking regrows its limbs?! Run! Slow it down, run, slow, run, ...

The art design of Marathon 1 (1994) was inspired by the Alien movies, so the whole thing was spoopy. The Hunters were the most intimidating, while the transparency-cloaked Compilers and low-flying kamikaze bugs called Lookers gave me the most paranoia and jumpscares. But the scariest thing in the game was the too-quiet dark corridors.
