I would like to hear this 27 minute lecture on sea monster map placement.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 46 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Can I get a longer version? Maybe with drawing classes, because those maps were awesome!

Yea, I feel like I'm missing out.

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 112 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

No no no. You need to start by explaining the evolution of mapmaking, before focusing on the monsters.
Non-map people don't have enough background on maps, so you must provide that first.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That must have been the problem. I feel like it's the same problem I had, not describing the backstory to middle earth fully to my date as I told her of the third age...

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 month ago

How did you expect her to understand the significance of the Númenor and the sword of Elendil, or Aragon's reluctance to claim his rightful throne, let alone the rings worn by Gandalf, Galadriel, and Elrond? Or why there are exactly nine ring wraiths?

Honestly, did you expect her to just accept the notion that some existential evil was for some reason deciding to wake up now and begin terrorizing the entire known world, without knowing the reasons why, or why destroying this old piece of jewelry is the only way to defeat the evil?

Even the movies cover that part in the very beginning!

[–] cass1312@piefed.blahaj.zone 87 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Unironically if I went on a date with someone and they infodumped for 30 minutes about sea monsters on old maps I think I'd fall in love lmao.

If she doesn't want to hear your dissertation on sea monsters then she's not the one.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 38 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Agreed. Not because she's as fascinated by it, although that would be a plus. But she should be enjoying the time with you, seeing what makes you excited. If that doesn't attract her, move on.

Be sure to do the same for her interests also. You don't have to be captivated by her hobbies or knowledge of something, but you should like watching her explain it to you.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Plus, it just sounds interesting. Who wouldn't be interested by that? I'm always baffled by people who don't like to learn random shit.

[–] pidgey@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago

Agree completely- I adore people who are excited about anything and tell me about it with enthusiasm!

That said - it needs to be mutual. Awesome for you to lecture me on your passions - but it’s not a fun relationship for me if you aren’t also eager to hear about the things I want to share.

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Unironically. When you find the one, they will love you because of this, not in spite of

[–] scrodumb@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 month ago

Every once in a while I'll say something completely incorrect so she talks science to me.

This thread is completely devoid of map sea monster facts and that’s a travesty

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

did you know that sea monsters are afraid of light?

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Don't listen to this, this is lies spread by sea monsters to make us put lights on our boats, making them easier to spot

I have a hard time reading "phobia for eggs." I feel like it should be phobia of eggs. Or egg phobia.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why such a phobia for for?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

They had had a bad experience with with, so i get trying for for phobias.

I never wondered why the map sea monsters were placed in the locations that they were placed in.

I am now wondering why the map sea monsters were placed in the locations that they were placed in.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Frankly I never questioned why there be monsters as marked.

[–] PostProcess@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago

This. They're marked there cos that's where they fricken' are!

[–] moistclump@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Always thought it was “because there’s room there and it looks neat.”

I mean, 27 minutes barely seems enough for a proper introduction to such a vast subject.

She got lucky, clearly her date was actually a sea monster disguised as a human, a clear attempt as using lonely humans as a slightly more ethical food source rather than sailors who might have family at home waiting for their return.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 month ago (2 children)

She should have clued in when her date kept asking for tree fitty.

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I ain't giving you no tree fiddy, you got-damn Loch Ness monster!

Monologues are not allowed to exceed 5 minutes on a date.

[–] retype@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

She was probably turned off by the fact that they aren't maps, but rather nautical charts. :(

Id definitely take sea monsters on maps so long as opposed to hearing how much they hate their ex
