I think sustainability is more important than a few seconds on a clock, but I'm not a marathon runner

sustainability should never take precedence over performance

What kind of insane take is this?

If I'm being really charitable, relying off the full quote "performance and safety", you could make an argument that if hydration is too inconvenient, people seeking high performance will skip water stops, therefore being at risk of dehydration.

In reality, though, dehydration isnt really as much of a problem as people like to pretend it is since it's self-limiting (you'll slow down and stop before doing any damage, and as long as water is available, you can bounce back). Overhydration, specifically leading to hyponatremia, is more of an issue, since that's more of a "feel mostly fine until your heart stops working right"-situation.

I guess the other "if I'm being charitable" argument could be about making sure you aren't getting people colliding at water stations, but that's more about layout than how the water is actually delivered.

My opinion is just, tough shit, it's all part of the race. The fact that I can't use shoes with a 10 cm stack or a bicycle during a marathon hurts my performance but everyone is subject to the same rules.
