Gas prices are still high, diesel is at a record high, and the reserve has shrunk more than 30% in six months. While the reserve held around 415 million barrels of oil in February, it now holds less than 285 million barrels of oil — lower than it has been since the early 1980s.

These rapid drawdowns of oil threaten the salt caverns' structure, says Samantha Gross, director of the energy security and climate initiative at the Brookings Institution, a nonpartisan policy think tank. As the reserves get lower and lower, the physical facilities can get degraded, Gross says: " You can damage them by pumping too much out of them."

Exactly as I said at the beginning of the summer: they will burn the reserves until the election them immediately turn them off.

We're still a month out and we mostly stopped pulling from the reserve 3 weeks ago. The last 3 weeks the reserve dropped by less than 1 million barrels, while all summer I think we were averaging more than 5 per week.

It’s a win win for them. They either lose the election and stick the Dems with a fuel crisis, or win the election and finish their dictatorship.

Let's collapse the oil energy system, so we can finally all be forced to transition to a cheaper, efficient, cleaner, and self-contained energy system like with solar.

Thanks Donny for helping the renewable energy movement!

[–] normalentrance@lemmy.zip 25 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I mean.. maybe. I like clean energy, but people will starve too. I don't see Trump's government hopping on clean energy as a solution. They will blame and deflect. They will destroy all our national parks scavenging for resources. It will be bad.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

People will starve but remember the alternative is total global collapse so embrace your inner Farquad

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I mean private planes will still fly and there will still be food that goes to waste. People starving isn't because of oil shortages but because the rich won't eat the cost and rather kick people onto the street. Now the fertilizer shortage on the other hand...

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

OR the Orange Stain will invade another country. Isn't the USA so gosh darn quirky!

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

This is what I likely see happening.

Canada is selling a large amount of their supplies to China and anyone else besides the U.S. right now due to tensions. Alberta already has a separatist movement that has been quietly invaded by bad actors from various U.S. organizations.

yeah he pretty much does not care about prices after the election so they are pumping out as much as possible to keep prices from skyrocketing.

“I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody" - Epstein Files star

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I wonder why markets are betting against a new shortage tho.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 7 points 2 weeks ago

The short answer is, it’s complicated. The long answer is that people are trying to build large net short positions while not spooking the bag holders.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

So I watch broadcast tv and there are so many buy gold commercials which makes me wonder what they have up their sleeve for that.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

I would presume they are dumping their gold on the muppets

USA has been at war or "conflicts, incursions" for all but a few years of their existence. That's why.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Prices have already skyrocketed. They've doubled since he took office.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

thats with massive pumping from the reserves. The true height is at least double again.

it's almost as if it would've been a good idea to figure out some alternate energy sources beforehand

[–] adjectivenoun@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We did.

Then we decided not to use them.

[–] BilSabab@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

what a wonderful decision that absolutely didn't backfire in any way!

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Republicans are expecting to lose and are going to blame all this fallout on the democrats who will be elected

[–] blackberry28@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 weeks ago (9 children)

And the average dumb American will fall for it and Trump will be elected president again in 2028 lol (yes, he will find a way around the 2 term limit law).

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

Or a Democrat will win, do nothing for 4 years, and then Trumpinator AI wins 2032

As the reserves get lower and lower, the physical facilities can get degraded, Gross says: " You can damage them by pumping too much out of them."

Why store an emergency reserve in a way where you can't access it as needed?
Ah who am I kidding, it's of course because it's cheap.

[–] adjectivenoun@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Cheap, fast to build, doesn't appear obvious from the air, hard to destroy with conventional weapons. The drawback of damaging the container when you use it wasn't considered as big an issue back when we knew what the words "strategic" and "emergency" meant. When the administration creates a new crisis every week to distract from the Epstein Files, it suddenly seems insufficient.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

As soon as we're on empty China or Russia will invade something.

The last drop of oil will be burned in a tank fighting over the last drop of oil.

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Trump will invade Taiwan to 'protect' it from China.

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

Not without fuel. Carriers and submarines are nuclear. Everything else is some form of diesel.

[–] MrPnut@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

You mean “way past the E”

[–] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

what a stupid design that can't pump out emergency fluid like it was supposed to do. "has to provide emergency fluid slowly or it fails" lol wow

way to go team.

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Its unavoidable by economics and geology.

The oil is stored in impermeable salt caves down in Louisiana and Texas. The hard rock salt and oil do not mix so they act as an environmentally stable storage tank that requires no maintenance and doesn't leech into the ground. This is vastly cheaper and much much safer for very long term storage of oil.

Problem being the caverns "settle" and are partially supported by the pressure of crude oil within them. As the crude is drawn out of them the salt walls could be damaged if pressure is relieved too quickly and/or not replaced with some other support.

Additionally the pumping infrastructure for crude requires the head pressure of a full tank to hit high flows, and some caverns are emptied first. As caverns empty out there is less head pressure, and requires more pump energy to get it out of a deeper hole. Plus fully emptied caverns will not provide addition inlets for higher flow. This is primarily what drives the "limit of economical recovery" they talk about where flows begin to drop off as the reserve is emptied.

[–] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The salt caverns are a consumable storage medium. You pump in water to remove the oil, which damages the salt caverns.

The more you pump oil in and out, the more the salt caverns degrade.

[–] cybervseas@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

I think it's more about the structural challenges of suddenly having that much volume pumped out of the reserves. Like at such a high rate. But I don't know much of anything about geostability!

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks Obama
