AI generated product sales listing images should not even be allowed, under false advertising.

[–] Atlas48@ttrpg.network 1 points 6 days ago

How can he not fumble?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 269 points 1 week ago (14 children)

How are such images not automatically fraud? The whole point of images in a sales listing is to show you what the product is like; they're either real and accurate or fake and deceptive.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 55 points 1 week ago (5 children)

they've always "freshened up" listings by adding furnishings so that part is probably fine. the issues start when the computer moves walls and windows around.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I've seen listings show original and "sample" pictures with AI furniture. This is the way.

[–] OddMinus1@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A listing in my area had AI generated image for showing the surrounding area. The AI misunderstood the scale of a field, and added kids the size of 3 story buildings playing soccer. And this was not realized before being posted.

Yeah. Honestly, I don't really have a problem if a developer is just able to... not spend a bunch of money on a ton of furniture that'll get shuttled between different properties, not accidentally bang up a wall, etc, and just make a good looking listing image that accurately represents the space.

All the better if it can maybe lead at least some of the more mom & pop landlords to not charge more because they're looking to recoup staging costs.

Hell, I'd love it if I could look at a listing, and maybe get like 5 or 6 different options for how the space could look in very different styles, rather than the same, bland, generic palette of furniture and colors just because that's the only truly cost-effective option.

But of course, we can't have AI do anything good, that'd be ridiculous. It has to move the windows around and make the space look twice as big for no reason!

I saw a thing yesterday about how Just Eat are now using AI generated images of the food being offered.

It's pissed me off for long enough that so many restaurants use stock images, rather than just taking a fucking photo of what they make, but for there to be no human at all in the process is a massive piss take. If they as a restaurant don't care enough about the food they offer to take some photos of it, then I, even as a fat bastard with a tendency towards gluttony, don't care enough to order from them.

And that's just a takeaway. AI images of somewhere that might cost me £1300 a month can fuck right off.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

There's a salon near me that has recently taped up ai generated pictures of people to show what kind of hairstyle they offer. Like, the whole point of the photo is to prove the quality of the service...

Right?? Out of date photos are annoying enough to deal with, but outright faked "photos" are a whole other ball game!

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 week ago (4 children)

A use case I've seen (not AI actually, but old-school CGI when I was looking a few years ago) is for projects still in construction where you can reserve an apartment and buy when it's ready. The CGI images show the general shape of the place and illustrate what it might look like once furnished, with the very clear notice that the apartment will be turned over unfurnished and the photos are only there to give you an idea

AI boosters convinced people that we need "AI centrism", which is exactly thing like this, except they took their lessons from how racist operate, and depicted one extreme as vibe coding/slop posting, while the other as just not wanting to use AI. One AI booster trying to pass as "AI critical" actually used the horseshoe theory in his video, but painting Hasan Piker as the "far left" option to Nick Fuentes. Hasan is not as far left as some people try to make it look like, he's just annoying and people think extremism means being annoying, while tankies like George of Santos (formerly BadEmpanda) know to keep his cool.

I like Mamdani, he's great. But he is doing exactly what all politicians should be doing all the time. The fact that this amazing man is seen as a shining star when he's just actually doing his job as a public servant is terrifying to me as someone with a young child.

Side note, if you Americans ever get sick of Mamdani, Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.. Please send them to Australia, we need people like them.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 38 points 1 week ago

When Mamdani sat at his desk for the first time, he moved all the neglected paperwork from previous administrations, and discovered a big red button that said "Something Good." So he pressed it, and Something Good happened.

He kept pressing it, and good stuff kept happening. It turned out, that button was ALWAYS there, and previous mayors could have pressed it at any time, but they never bothered.

Then it turns out that a Something Good button is on the desk of EVERY politician, and they just don't press it. Why? Because really wealthy people and corporations pay them a lot of money to NOT press that button.

It's time to make ALL politicians start pressing the Something Good button on their desks.

[–] nullspace@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

It can't be doom and gloom all the time. He's setting the standard and people are celebrating it.

He keeps smashing that "make everything better" button.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago

If our country weren't so bought off by billionaires, it wouldn't feel so weird to see a politician doing obviously correct things.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 69 points 1 week ago (3 children)

The fact that people are so astonished that a politician is actually serving the people that elected him is a pretty damning criticism of your political establishment.

Democrats hate this one trick.

Spoiler: It's called serving the people.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 29 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It's called doing anything. Like, these things he's doing are great, but it really shouldn't be headlines. These things should just be normal politician things. They're great because every other fucking politician doesn't give half a shit about their people, but they shouldn't be. They should be boring things, that are done, and you don't even know it has happened.

You can't give the blanket "Democrats" credit for this. The degree to which the Democratic establishment fought to keep guys like him out if power can't be understated. However the progressive parts of the democratic party are growing in strength and number by the day. I hope some day the party stands up for half of what he does. This is the only guy who makes me hopeful for the future

Here we are giving a politician standing ovations for doing his job and working in the interests of the people who voted for him. What a world we live in where politicians stand out for doing what should be considered a standard, honest day’s work.

[–] FoxAlive@lemmy.zip 39 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Man what the fuck are our local politicians doing. Every time I hear his name he's doing something that's actually is helping and getting shit done.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago

Well, most local politicians are 1) mediocre and 2) not the mayor of one of the largest cities in the world.

The city has more people than 38 states. It's hard to get more visibility than that.
Like, my local mayor ordered the police to forbid certain types of restraints, ban no-knock warrants, and raising the threshold for traffic stops. Also moderately updated the ordinances around recreational marijuana businesses . He's also directed city funds towards fighting homelessness by providing substance abuse counseling and housing them in vacant appointments we already have, and building auxiliary housing.

Pretty good. But there's only around 100k people. It's just not as much impact or visibility.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

99% of politicians don't work for the people. A capitalist system will always require anyone with power to chase the money. He's part of the remaining 1%

And i thought "image for illustration purpose only" from 10 years ago is bad. Nowadays people just don't bother with taking picture of the thing they selling.

Dude is the Wikipedia image on the article for "Standing on your business"

[–] DoctorWhoDMC@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This guy's mayor of a single city and he's making every politician worldwide look like shit with minimal effort.

[–] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 2 points 6 days ago

kind of a big city though

[–] cheat700000007@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (9 children)

Should be banned outright as false advertising

Landlords larping as peasants and spreading misinformation about how genAI image using listings are actually super renter/buyer friendly and how Mamdani is just trying to buy all the property to make the worlds biggest mosque in order to recruit teens to join ISIS in 3… 2… 1…

I don't even live in New York City and I'd fall on a grenade for this guy. Just one W after another.

[–] lemmygarden@lemmy.today 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm getting sick and tired of Mamdani constantly winning

[–] absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz 5 points 6 days ago

I can't remember if it was before 2016 but it is something Trump said, he said "you are going to get sick of winning".

But this is actually what winning looks like. Approval ratings go up!!!

[–] ironpangolin29@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm happy for the guy and NYC for his accomplishments thus far, kinda worried about him too.

He's making asshats out of all the other mayors offices though. When you have no baggage and don't have dues to pay. You can get shit done and it makes people look bad and makes people jealous.

I feel like it's best for NYC that he start talking behind ballistic glass. Just sayin'...I'm just sayin'!

You know we are in deep shit when the logical, common sense thing is the "cool thing"

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

There's not already a law? They don't accept paintings or cartoons or artist's renderings in listings, do they?

NO AI images, "disclosure" is actually an absurd measure.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'd go one step further and require the same for photos that have been edited in any way, shape, or form.

I also would even simply prohibit pictures that have been modified.

If it ain't the real thing, it shouldn't be used to sell or rent me the thing

[–] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 1 points 6 days ago

so no fake tiddies on your stripper?

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

He’s not even shooting for the stars, and he doesn’t and shouldn’t need to, meeting very base level societal needs is just hitting it out if the park these days.
