I was curious and looked up what you can drive in the UK/EU. It's 9 hours. Twice a week you can push it to 10.
They've just doomed every person in a car on every major interstate.

Well, it's one way to boost sales on the gas-guzzling, rolling tanks the US auto makers refuse to diversify away from.
This is crazy where i live its 9 hours manditory rest of 45 min after 4,5 hours maximum of 56 per week maximum 90 per 2 weeks. And manditory rest of 11 hours between shifts, we are still well suplied there is zero need for 14 hour shifts 12 is already crazy.
Truckers arent going to be driving anywhere if the price of diesel doesnt slow.

As a non-American, I find it baffling and hilarious that many Americans are proud to work 80 hours a week. It's not a flex. They'd regret having done so when they become too frail and forgetful at the old age. And all the money they saved and pension being collected will be spent on healthcare and medication instead.
They did not even live their life when they were young and they won't even enjoy the remainder.

Even the original 14 is horrible. Here it's 9-10 hours per day max, with a cap of 56 hours per week.
If you’re driving 16 hours a day, then your cargo should probably be going by rail.
The point is moot. With diesel skyrocketing they won't be able to drive at all.
If you have any MAGA in your circle, be sure to pass this along to them, so they understand.
What's left unsaid here, is when they change the law, the drivers have no choice but to comply. If they refuse to drive 16 hours, some other driver will, and the one who refuses loses the job. The truck driver has bills and the lease on his truck to pay, like everyone else. The people who hire them are in the same boat. If they don't demand that their drivers drive 16 hours, then the next shipping company that does will take the job.
And, so it goes up the chain, the rich get richer and the poor get fucked. Make sure MAGA gets that they are among the poor, just like the rest of us. And, they'll get fucked next.
Not surprising, apparently no one in the USA gives a damn about traffic safety.

How is someone supposed to get proper sleep working a sixteen hour day!?
Well, if they don't eat, shower, take a walk or rest, never clean their clothes, do any chores or have free time, they can still sleep for ~7h after they park the truck and make sure the load is still secured.
That's totally not slavery!
A couple years ago in the US, they switched from largely paper-based driver logging and random checks to an all-electronic tracking system, which was much more difficult to fake. Basically overnight, every rest stop and free truck parking area was jam-packed, and states have had to expand them since. It's important to note that nothing about the rest requirements actually changed, just how they were enforced. So, logically, before the electronic logging, a large number of truckers were just flagrantly ignoring the law, and it became evident after the fact.
I wonder if there's a name for that kind of phenomena.

This is like bumping the speed limit up five mph. People are already speeding, now the "enforced" limit is just higher. Some truck drivers push things to try and get more loads in a week. Electronic logs makes this harder to hide, but they still do it. Which gets back to the reason for the rule, to reduce fatigue on the road. Be careful out there, since no one making sure the roads are safer.
