if you don't wanna read through this garbage, understandably, the obvious problem according to the autor who has never met another republican who is interested in safter streets is that the darn democracts keep using woke words and not like that this idiot and his ilk have a conception of street planning that is entirely solipsistic

They should take a page out of The Onions playbook and post the same article title with different bodies.

"Chud thinks obvious issue is woke bullshit until it impacts them personally"

[–] TUMBLE_BUS@hexbear.net 8 points 1 hour ago

I don't really give any credit or have any faith in people like this.

Some THIS dramatic had to happen to you for you to have such a minor epiphany? I'm sorry that just means you're a deeply unserious person who has no capacity to analyze the world beyond your base emotions, and I'm pretty sure next time a nonbinary person on Facebook is slightly rude to you you're gonna rubber band back into the asshole you were before.

This could've been an Onion headline and I would not have bat an eye.

US-style growth: "I was an idiot and then something bad happened. I am still an idiot, but I got one good take now at least."

US-style growth: "I was an idiot and then something bad happened. I am still an idiot, ~~but I got one good take now at least~~ and now I'm upset with the other side for not succeeding at doing the thing I and other like-minded people actively prevented them from doing."

I mean, look at this dolt. She's both-sidesing like it's her job.

we turned roads into a political argument.

We?

The Left loses the Right

Entirely their fault, you're correct.

if we finally start letting the experts guide the conversation without politicizing the issue.

From the person whose ilk were ignoring the experts and advocating on behalf of car companies, awesome.

that congressman from ohio who chose his gay kid over being a bigot

Unfortunately, for every point there is a counterpoint.

And obviously anecdotal, but my regressive mother raged at the government for making unemployment so difficult and low-paying when my dad was out of a job. And immediately went back to talking about jobless bums the second he got one.

He just assumes the law won't apply to HIS son. Cuz it probably won't.

To make an American have decent politics you have to make them suffer like Job, I guess.

[–] SnoopSqueak@lemmy.today 10 points 3 hours ago

But Job didn't learn shit. He's more like the anti-vax parents who are not sorry even though their children died of measles. God gambled with Job's life and family, allowed satan to kill them all, Job suffered the abuse with conviction, and then god came down to scold Job's friends for not being as submissive as Job.

And then god gave Job seven times the family he had before, as if that makes up for everything when the originals were still dead. Children are objects, possessions in the bible.

It's also the only time satan kills people in the bible, though it's nowhere near god's planet-scale genocides. Arguably every death is god's fault, if he is omnipotent.

It works! I changed from being a reactionary to a commie via being exposed to the us medical system and meeting people different from me in rehab and the psych ward.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 32 points 5 hours ago

the only things that matter are the things that have affected me personally. everything else is communism

[–] erik@hexbear.net 36 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Her complete inability to articulate what exactly the "left" does to turn off the right from bike lanes is super telling in this. But it's such a part of The Discourse (TM), that the right is not a conscious effort, but a constant reaction to whatever "the left" is doing. Any time the right does something crazy, like somehow link bike lanes to DEI, it's somehow the left's fault.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 13 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

well they are reactionary

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 20 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe we need to invent rolling coal for bicycles?

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 10 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

you can put a 2-stroke on a push bike instead of an electric motor

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 7 points 3 hours ago

I think you could get some republicans with a saxonette but not a velosolex because fwd is for queers, obviously

[–] BioWarfarePosadist@hexbear.net 19 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

How we frame the issue matters. The Left loses the Right as soon as bike lanes are tied into identity politics. Multimodal equity is simply “freedom of movement” to a Republican. But when Republicans talk about freedom, the progressives hear privilege. Aren’t the Left and the Right essentially saying the same thing?

Except even if the left had framed bike lanes as "Freedom of Movement" the right would have still forced Identity politics into it. People who ride bikes are seen as nuisance on the road to reactionaries. I don't know how often I heard jokes from someone I was riding with about how hitting a Bicycle would be "20 points" or something similar.

If the problem I had with the the right was their insistence that we name things terribly, I would be an (actual) centrist! I would be okay with calling bike lanes "Trump lanes" if it meant we actually got good bicycle infrastructure.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 4 points 2 hours ago

I feel like the left has actually made a concerted effort to make the bike lanes digestible to conservatives by adopting conservative talking point like not just bikes with strong towns.

It's just completely useless.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 3 points 2 hours ago

America lanes

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 25 points 5 hours ago

bike lanes are DEI, it's too bad your dad's continued existence is woke very-smart

Not sure how much of this is AI hallucinations and how much Republican hallucination but what republican bike lanes bills that the opposition just talks past is she talking about?

[–] alexandra_kollontai@hexbear.net 2 points 46 minutes ago

It really does read like ChatGPT.

[–] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 27 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

I think the point is all bike bills would be bipartisan but they're only not because they don't plaster the word freedom 800 times over it so it's their fault and also surely, surely, if they did the autor could reconcile her cognitive dissonance about still rooting for the team that killed her dad

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 6 points 3 hours ago

I guess genuinely the only cases where conservatives push for creating bike lanes I can think off is when it's about converting a train line into a bike lane.

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 24 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

It's not like conservatives have who knows how many spiels shitting on the idea of transit in any form but that of the car ('15 minute cities are woke', 'buses are shitty and for the poors', 'subways are where you get mugged', etc)

Also

I’m a Republican, and in nine months of advocating for safer streets, I have yet to meet another one.

Do we think this one is going to eventually have an epiphany or no?

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 21 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe more republican dads need to be run over?

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Probably legislation to mine bike lanes to stick it to the libs.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 9 points 5 hours ago

The lane is open!
