As you can see from grindr's official status page there have been no outages yesterday (the start of the RNC) or today
It's not homophobia to call out hypocrisy.
There have been plenty of cases where pols voted for anti-LGBTQ+ laws, and then been abrubtly outed.

Yes, the prominent association between 'Republican" and "closeted gay man," is homophobic. No, there does not have to be 0% gay Republicans for it to not be homophobic. You are not pointing out "hypocrisy," you are reasserting that it is in fact gay people always hurting themselves and hiding amongst us (not even to mention the literal pedophilia and child sexual violence that this admin is obviously participatory in and the association between "stranger danger" and gay men).
Even beyond that, to focus on the "hypocrisy" of gay Republicans for being gay and that being the problem obscures the racialized and class dynamics behind queer political representation, and queer history. These institutions unsurprisingly privilege property-owning, white people who have always been more insulated from the consequences of homophobia. It is not even remotely new or republican for wealthy gay men to be conservative or exhibit zero solidarity with the queer community because, guess what, they understand that they benefit from the subordination of those groups (and make no mistake, Dems who do vote for "pro-LGBT" laws are by no means doing so in solidarity with queer people; we are subjects of another genocidal wave in the US for a reason).
Even beyond that, no, making jokes about how Donald Trump is a bad guy because he sucks Putin's cock or whatever is not pointing out "hypocrisy," it's just calling someone gay because it is synonymous with "weak," or "submissive." If the joke is indistinguishable from "real" homophobic jokes, then that's just what it is. Liberals have had a hayday getting to express their bigotry with perceived righteousness now that they finally have a "deserving" group of people to channel it through.
It's the same shit with the rampant ableism, fatphobia, queerphobia, and ageism that have become commonplace in liberal discourses that emphasize the "hypocrisy" of these people. What vulnerable group do I get to make fun of instead of you for how hypocritical you are?

Ok, so a closeted republican was caught cruising in 2007. What does that have to do with the (demonstrably false) claim that "republican events cause grindr outages"? And how does your single example from nearly 20 years ago prove that the claims about grindr aren't false and homophobic?
Another good one is gayhomophobe.com, but it seems to be inactive for the last five years. In its heyday it was a genuinely good resource for political hypocrisy tracking.

I saw a comment somewhere saying that the grindr usage peaks that people associate with republican conventions are actually pretty common in all sorts of events of this scale that involve a large crew of people for organizing and running the event.

On it's own it wouldn't, but Cloudflare/aws/gcp/etc. might try to locally rate-limit if there's a spike in traffic that could cause other service degradation.

Stunt? This happens every time there’s a big Republican event. It’s been like this for years.
The biggest recent Republican conventions were July 15-18 2024, August 24-27 2020, and July 18-21 2016. status.grindr.com doesn't have history back to July 2016, but for those dates in 2020 and 2024, there are no incidents.
People might report to down detector or things like that, but... that's amusing trolling, and part of the stunt, so it isn't relevant.
I don't know anything at all about grindr's infrastructure, but I'm really, really dubious that with 5.5 million daily users, they'd have more than 1 or 2 points of presence for the entire continental US. That means those POPs are sized for >100,000 users per hour, and 20,000 horny Republicans aren't enough to cause major issues, even if literally everyone at this convention is jumping on grindr afterwards. Also, modern infrastructure autoscales. Also also, the SREs for Grindr would notice if the app breaks every other year, and track when republican conventions are happening.
