Rules: (interactive)

1) Be nice and; have funDoxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them

2) All posts must end with a '?'This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?

3) No spamPlease do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.

4) NSFW is okay, within reasonJust remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com. NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].

5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions. If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.

6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world

7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.

I think I first saw this on 4Chan circa like 2005? It lives rent free in my head.

Forsooth! This tapestry hath been altered. My knowledge doth derive from the stitching, as well as having observ'd many such forgeries in mine time.

The Bayeux Tapestry is probably one of the oldest memes (or at least the base for a set of memes) still in use in the digital age. So many earlier others based on wordplay or written text in general are probably incomprehensible now except to specific Tolkienesque ancient language nerds, since modern languages have mutated so much since medieval times, and are therefore lost.

Second place may belong to the Cool S.

:-)

I remember a time before emoticons and we'd say stuff like *g* for grin. But I don't use those anymore. And I never adopted emojis. So that narrows down when my brain calcified.

All your base?

My kid definitely uses it.

Actually the oldest I know of might be "23 skidoo" or maybe the word "O.K.", but not sure if those qualify as memes. Although if "6 7" qualifies, then they do too.

How is babby formed. And pregnate, and all the other weird ass yahoo answer screen caps there were. It was wild

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I still use babby daily. Mostly to myself in my head but occasionally in an email.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 1 points 23 minutes ago

I have used it in text form so many countless thousands of times and not one person has registered 😞

I had the pleasure of dropping this in a work context not that long ago:

One time I made my husband a valentine's card that said

"Roses are red, violets are blue, all my base are belong to you."

Made me think of XKCD 550:

"Pregananant."

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 15 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I use this with my wife and kids all the time. They don't even get the reference.

That's a common one in our house but we so all get the reference lol
