Canada can't handle the amount of Americans that would want to move there for the health insurance. If the US ever provides an equal quality of life to 99% of its population, then we can open the borders. As is, our borders are already pretty open. Canadians aren't unwilling to hire Americans. It's just extra paperwork.

We would see the amount of guns and violence skyrocket. All of the guns used in crime are smuggled from the US.
This is good in theory but, imagine being such a third world country you have to go to another country for healthcare because you can't afford to pay for the equivalence of a car/fancy car.
Canada had to invest a fortune in holographic health cards because so many Americans were using fake cards to access our inferior health care.
I donβt have to imagine it. I live it daily.
European countries aren't openly antagonistic to their neighbours.
You underestimate us :D
Which European neighbours are actively trade-warring each other?
We should, we should also have it for Mexico, is it going to happen...
nothing about america is trustworthy. Why would you let them in your country without a security clearance?
but would an EU-style freedom of movement remove that by allowing citizens of both Canada and US cross freely...?
Captain Obvious says yes.
It should be noted that not all that glitters is gold. At various times, Schengen member countries have reinstated border checks. Not at every border crossing but randomly checking people. Often unfortunately in accordance with the Family Guy police stop meme Pantone skin color chart. Germany is doing it at great cost as an internal political maneuver. Italy is doing it to people coming from Spain post the run on Ceuta. At the height of the Syrian refugee crisis every EU country along the way did it. Free movement is the first victim of anti-immigration politics everywhere. There is an argument to be made that this lofty ideal inked on paper in the 90s was too lofty for its own good in a realpolitik kind of way.
Given the current US administration and the crap they're pulling on their friendly neighbours to the north there is no way this will happen. This century, if I had to put a time frame on it. This is what happens when the toddlers run diplomacy. Earning respect takes ages, losing it takes no time at all.
you want to just let gun toting hicks into your country willy-nilly?
Canada's already got plenty of those
No? No more than UK/EU travel is free, anyway.
Ten years ago you might have had a case. But now, build a wall.
