Kerry didn’t run on ending the Iraq War. He ran on doing it better. (I had to check because Kerry literally ran on nothing like all fucking centrist dems (although fuck the entire genocide party obviously) so I can’t even remember a single policy he ran on. I was in high school when he ran. My dad stayed up all night to watch the election results. He was coughing like crazy by morning. He had basically made himself ill for fucking John Kerry. This was also after Howard Dean lost the primary (running on universal health care and also from Vermont and also a traitor) because he screamed yeeeehaaawww!!! at a campaign rally. Kerry also went duck-hunting at night like three days before the election in November. PATHETIC.)

Libs never talk about Kerry’s presidential campaign (except in this tweet, oddly enough) because the guy clearly ate shit due to his centrism. Same with Biden. They moan about Hillary because they can blame her loss on russia / being a woman rather than being a terrible candidate and person. Same with Kamala.

Kerry vaguely talked about climate change by basically saying the US has the right to invade the Amazon nations and African/Asian nations to steal their land in name of protecting the enviroment, something he says to this day.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The US, famously a responsible and climate-conscious steward of land

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

boomer liberals genuinely believe this

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 30 points 1 week ago

yeah it was all purple heart mcgee and then they had "swiftboat veterans for truth" claiming he lied about it.

dean was slipping, but the overreaction to the scream was fucking hilarious and finished him off for sure

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 28 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

God there were so many ways Kerry was a shit candidate.

The whole “I was for the war before I was against it” spinelessness.

The fact that Dubya’s lackeys completely telegraphed the swift boat strategy beforehand and Kerry’s campaign was still caught flat footed by it.

Oh, it’s not a major thing but still indicative of everything that was wrong with his candidacy, was when he was trying to appeal to the hinterland folks by taking about how great nascar is, but instead of calling it nascar he said “the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.”

Absolutely sauceless, everyone saw his loss coming from a mile away. If this dude really thought Kerry had a realistic shot, that’s just sad.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

My main memory of that campaign was him showing up on a red carpet somewhere with his ketchup heiress wife and all the news media being like "it's very Hollywood, but... is it presidential??" Is it any wonder he ate shit lol

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

exactly, neolibs will claim being anti-war would lose elections but we're never allowed to try

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

To be fair they're right, it's just that it loses before the election when you get shut out by the uniparty.

god it kills me that the people i knew in college who were caping for every bland uncharismatic west wing democrat will continue to do that for the rest of their lives. i guess self-awareness doesn't pay the bills.

israel as a wedge issue

die

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 36 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

israel is the wedge issue, it's the keystone to the imperial arch of America, a necessary foothold in their energy empire.

It's a "wedge issue" in that once it's destroyed, the whole thing will crumble.

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 40 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Imagine thinking that nothing has significantly changed in US politics since 2004. Oh, right centrist Dems are definitely stuck in 2004/2008/2016. What no object permanence does to your political awareness; many such cases.

[–] PaulSmackage@hexbear.net 37 points 1 week ago

It is the year 2000 and Al Gore is president.

Citizens United and the final nail in the coffin of US democracy

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 38 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this is an evil country, i do not want to be where this country is at

[–] mickey@hexbear.net 31 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Certainly not. And what's the takeaway supposed to be from his anecdote - that he should have triangulated his opposition to the Iraq invasion??

Edit: I wonder if OOPs perspective is a symptom of cognitive dissonance. America is the best freest country in the world and our democratic elections are perfect, but W Bush still got two terms and invaded Iraq. So to avoid squaring the reality that USA does bad things, the liberal mind palace insists that liberals are not voting and campaigning in just the right pandering compromising way.

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 37 points 1 week ago

This guy thinks a hostile takeover is when people have strong opinions and vote their ethics.

It would be nice if we had enough class unity to show him what a real "hostile takeover" looks like

[–] Yeller_king@reddthat.com 34 points 1 week ago

If the issue is low salience, then what's the harm in adopting the morally correct position?

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 34 points 1 week ago (3 children)

idk who this guy is but i thought it was accurate that americans don't break votes on "foreign policy" until literally just now.

[–] TheoryofChange@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

Unless they are being sent home in body bags, generally not.

this is the first guy to ever get cte from playing cod

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He has an Israeli GF/wife or whatever. So just a little explanation of why a CODtuber who's barely conscious and just breathing started to talk about politics.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 30 points 1 week ago (1 children)

seen-this-one

I remember when they said that blind support for Israel was a tiny wedge issue last election too, and then it cost them the election. I've also seen democrats flatly refuse to ever learn from their mistakes the entire time I've been alive!

[–] DrStanleyGoodspeed@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It is amazing the capacity they have for losing. When it seems like they should have the biggest easiest opening, they just fumble the shit with nonsense.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They make more money through donations when they aren't actually running the country. Their constant fumbles make a lot more sense when you recognise they don't really want to win, they want to be perpetual opposition and rake in the cash.

[–] DrStanleyGoodspeed@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Ok so this is something that has occurred to me. Are they actually happy just being the opposition? Like sometimes I feel like there has been a gentleman’s agreement between the parties to put on a charade. Logically I don’t think it’s actually true, but it sure seems like it sometimes

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

Both parties represent the capitalist class, not the masses. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is all just theater to trick people or something, but their interests as political parties are much more closely aligned with each other's than they are with the working class. That's why the Democrats will happily pass bills unpopular with anyone but the rich, or why they will claim to oppose the Republicans, but when they get into power they don't undo any of their disastrous policies, sometimes even expanding on them.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

When they are in opposition, they are more than happy to let the Republicans destroy all of their supposedly beloved 'institutions' (EPA, FDA, IRS, etc.) and then, when they do get in, do absolutely nothing to fight against the institutions that are bulwarks of Republican support (ICE, DHS, etc.).

It isn't that they have a gentleman's agreement, and more that they have the same agenda, they just have fundamental disagreements on how it should be pursued, and who they are appealing to. Democrats believe it should be pursued quietly and efficiently, with a focus on maximizing the numbers and effectiveness of these austerity policies in order to appeal to naive progressives and RepublicansturnedDemocrats, while the Republicans do it as loud as they can, even if it reduces its effectiveness, in order to appeal to their base.

Democrats do believe that Republicans are destroying the country, but only in so far as they believe that they are pursuing these policies in such a way that Democrats can no longer publically support these policies that they believe work because the Republicans are pursuing them poorly.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 28 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

So he thought the war was so unpopular people would vote for any old shit, even another pro-war candidate, just to get W out of office. If that was him young and idealistic, I dread to imagine where his head's at these days

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 28 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The 2004 reflection is halfway to a correct analysis.

The other half is that the plurality of Americans don't vote because they're not motivated to, and of the ones that do, they are very forgetful and cast a vote based on how they subconsciously feel about a candidate in the moment.

[–] trompete@hexbear.net 28 points 1 week ago

These socdem types that are paying lip-service to anti-Israel sentiment are, in fact, cynically doing it to win primaries and elections, and are not, in fact, going to practice any anti-Zionism at all. You can see the change in e.g. Mamdani's rhetoric once elected, and how he's working with Zionists now. This is how socdemism always operates, that's the role it plays in the system: Deradicalize, pacify, control the opposition.

[–] TUMBLE_BUS@hexbear.net 27 points 1 week ago

Hot Take: IDK who this guy is but I think there's SOME truth to what he's saying. As much as anyone-to-the-left-of-Regan hates Israel now, I kind of doubt it will actually effect voting patterns as much as some of us hope. Most "median" voters just vote according to who they think will make the economy better. If anything I'd argue the foreign policy shift is largely linked to the fact quality of life is declining in the USA lead a lot of regular Americans to start going "wait, why are we giving this ethno-state all this money? And spending so much on a war with Iran that we're clearly losing?" Which I guess is an improvement but also show's a lot of Americans are fine with Imperialism when it actually (seemingly?) benefits them.

[–] Speaker@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

I prefer to think of it as a "wedgie issue", because if you're on the wrong side I'm going to stuff you in a locker.

Hutch openly supports Zionists

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

“By wanting politicians that do what the base supports…you’re doing a hostile takeover of the democrats! People might laugh at us if we aren’t republican clones…yeah they laugh at us anyway, but maybe they’ll stop if we’re even nicer to them?”

[–] StalinsGiantSpoon@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

he's not wrong to a degree. Not being pro israel probably could have helped Copmala win another state or two, but it wouldnt turn into a landslide. most people are going to vote because of the price of gas near them. Americans are just really fuckin worthless.

it would help a little if she had anything to offer at all.
