Aren't the serving sizes intentionally small so they can get away with saying that stuff has less sugar?

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 66 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Smaller portion = less sugar, fat, salt, calories etc... If I remember correctly a few states have addressed making unrealistic portion sizes for the label as making misleading claims.

Nutrients should always be listed in pr 100g or in percent (effectively the same).

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] uniquethrowagay@feddit.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

Its incomprehensible to me that this isn't mandatory around the world

They are almost always 1 oz (28g).

But, individually packaged stuff does tend to pull bullshit like “1 serving=half a bottle of soda”

Peanut butter is probably going to be fine though

[–] phailhaus@piefed.social 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I saw a wrapped item that did the opposite, which was weird. It was a pack of 3 pieces and a serving was 4.

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Probably to hit some magic number:

Contains 10 g of protein per serving!!^*^

^*^Serving size 10 kg

Tic tacs have a serving size of less than a gram so they can claim 0g of sugar.

[–] Technoworcester@feddit.uk 10 points 3 weeks ago

Only in America. Always thought that was a weird law.

Tic-tacs are 94% sugar. A serving of tic-tacs is 1 tic-tac, which is just under half a gram. The FDA considers less than half a gram of sugar in a serving to be negligible and not required to be listed.

In other words, a product that is 94% sugar is legally sugar-free.

In the EU (probably in the rest of europe too) you must have a per 100 gram (you can have bullshit "portions" too if you want to, but the "per 100 gram" must be there).

How the hell do you americans compare different brands??

It's the recommended serving sizes that are out of touch with reality.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 6 points 3 weeks ago

Damn personal size potato chip bag said 2.5 servings!

A single serving was like 6 chips!

Suggested serving sizes have never been realistic. Manipulated by the manufacturer to make us think the food is lower in calories than it actually is.

In reality we all serve ourselves a fifth of a jar. List THOSE calories on the label please.

[–] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah ‘serving size: three jelly beans’ or ‘one Oreo cookie’ are not realistic even for people who don’t actually binge them.

[–] skidicarus@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (3 children)

Peanut butter typically has a serving size of one or two tablespoons. That's entirely reasonable.

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (4 children)

No that's not reasonable wtf

Half my diet was stopping eating peanut butter. The other half was drinking less. Helth

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Peanut butter is delicious but it's basically the neutron star of food calories! Makes me sad.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

That's one of the reasons peanut butter is an incredible survival food. Nutrient/calorie dense, doesn't need refrigeration, shelf stable for a long long time, it's delicious. It checks a lot of boxes that not many other foods can.

It's not me that's out of touch with reality, peanut butter jar.

[–] Trex202@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm in touch with my peanut butter jar

You guys get multiple servings from a jar?

[–] FatherPeanut@pawb.social 19 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

It is rough that many types of peanut butter contain the sugar content they do. Really deceptive with how significant it builds up to being once put into perspective. I encourage y'all to try plain peanut butter, just nuts and salt. Gonna be a slightly different experience, but the peanut intensity is just so much greater, and man its much healthier.

Speaking from experience, as I am actively eating it now.

A serving size of peanut butter is one.

One spoon.

One inch.

One jar.

etc.

I'm not out of touch, those lying fucks trying to obscure the calories are at fault

[–] Leviathan@fedinsfw.app 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The serving size is what I snack on while I'm making my peanut butter sandwich.

[–] Codpiece@feddit.uk 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

That’s a European serving. The rest of the jar is one Texan serving.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 14 points 3 weeks ago (6 children)

we don't even list serving sizes on our stuff, just nutrients per 100g so you can count it yourself

Given that the most typical use is spreading it on a slice of bread, I’ll argue, no I’m not out of touch, everyone else is. When the “serving size” can’t fill the expected use case, it’s not the consumer that’s wrong

"serving size" is a BS scam. it's "whatever amount so the calories look OK"...

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

The trick is to use the back of the spoon to scoop it out! Makes spreading so much easier.

[–] Adulated_Aspersion@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

That 2 tablespoon serving shows me that i regularly eat 4 servings per sammich.

[–] fake@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago
