- Instance-wide TOS: https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
- Lemmy code of conduct: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/code_of_conduct.html
2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
- Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudoin Windows. - No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
- Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.

Yeah, I'd rather have an option I ignore than one I miss.
Nice, but Heroic is just way too superior.
Still want to see it. I hope they implement the proton and don't just show the games which are native Linux, otherwise it'll be terrible.
Why would I use heroic over lutris?
How do I know bro? Its just a matter of taste and choice. I use Heroic because repacks install is just better and yes I pirate few games but not all. And it has a lot of features and ig other launcher have them too.
I don't dislike Lutris or any other apps like these. But for me when I tried lutris at the start of my Linux transition 4 years ago, I was confused and didn't know what I was doing not Lutris' fault in any way but I found Heroic more intuitive thats all.
Store integration. If you're in the habit of buying games.
Heroic has built in support for gog, epic games and I think amazon games, but don't quote me on that. Its all in all very good and at least for me it always worked better than trying to achieve the same over lutris.
built in support for gog, epic games
Lutris also has that.
Maybe it is just a matter of taste. Personally I would never use any launcher to launch my gog games, because I think the whole advantage of gog is to have the game in a convenient zip file.
There are big differences, Heroic present the gog library in a nice way and supports convenience features like cloud saves (must have with big screen at home and remote gaming on Laptop) as well as gametime tracking, some achievements (dont care about those).
Its far more convenient than Lutris for GoG and of course you can easily backup your Games.
cloud saves
I never needed that since Steam introduced them 15 years ago (or more). It is just annoyed having to wait for that.
gametime tracking
Why would you need that? But lutris does this.
some achievements (dont care about those)
Yeah me neither.
of course you can easily backup your Games
You can easily backup your GoG games by just downloading the zip file.
Just means more and better support for Linux going forward. This is a good thing.
I get that Sweeny doesn't like to gargle Gabe's billionaire balls as much as a lot of the users here, but Epic officially supporting Linux is a good thing.
It's good for linux, it's just not impressive for epic at all, they're starting to catch up to where steam was 20 years ago on linux support.
Epic supported Linux almost 30 years ago. They just didn't have a store back then.
What missing feature is needed from heroic ? I prefer 1000x time having community driven launcher than official one. Egs is known to be a piece of shit launcher and if any official dΓ©veloppement impede on the community one I'm gonna burn something. Also have u tried egs on android ? It unreal how barebone it is. Not sure a linux one will be complete and useful.
Also launcher support β fortnite support
Naa, it's about the network affect. Sweeney said there would be no LInux EGL until there is enough demand. Even if the Linux EGL sucks, it's still Engineering dollars being spent by Epic. Engineering dollars that would never have been spent on Linux unless the there was a requisite level of demand. Sweeney sees the writing on the wall. I'm sure there will be a lot of new to Linux gamers that come for the Linux EGL and eventually switch to Heroic.
Does getting ones balls gargled actually feel any good?
For the gargler or the gargled ?
I can confirm, that gargeling someone else's balls can be quite enjoyable.
Linux versions of Epic games store and GOG galaxy is still a big win for everyone
Not just because it enables more access for everyone, but because it represents a deepening commitment by these companies to Linux as a gaming platform.
The more companies see Linux as a viable gaming platform, the more consumers will. It's a virtuous cycle, and one that will only help to erode Windows grip on the desktop OS space.
It's wild that Sweeney would let this happen. He's been pretty vocally anti-linux in the past. Must be a big enough change to make him consider Linux dollars worth chasing.
Consider this a capitulation
It's because giving away 36a463 games didn't work...
Make shitty port of shitty software => People don't use shitty port => Shitty promoter blames the platform
This will only lead to Sweeny saying 'told you so' about Linux is not a gaming platform.
They want that fortnite steam machine money
Yep, this is exactly it.
It is a big deal. If Epic changes some API and breaks Heroic, it is your problem for using an unsupported third party application. If Epic breaks their official client, their QA manager has a problem.
π good golden gods the year of the linux desktop is finally upon us.
We just had to wait for windows to get too shitty for average gamer
Epic Games as in Tim Sweeney's Epic Games?
What are the package names so I can block them from installing please
EGS has some integration with UE so if you're buying marketplace assets it's easy to keep them updated and to add them to projects. Since UE can compile to Linux if you're running Linux, this is a move that makes Linux a more appealing OS for game development.
Sure, it's all stuff you can do manually. But the sweeter you make the pot the more regular users you attract to your OS.
If we have things like Heroic on Linux, and if they are just bringing the Epic Game Store only and not the anti cheat, then who cares. Nothing has really changed then, as we were always able to play all non-online games from our Epic libraries anyways.
Plus you can bet your ass that the new and official EGS app will have SO MANY issues when that is released. It was a mess (still kinda is) even on Windows. So many bugs. I wouldn't be surprised if many Linux users will just continue using the alternatives for the smaller resources it takes up.
Eww Lutris.
It's kinda sad. I felt the maintainers feeling of being overwhelmed and underappreciated, but that whole discussion in the issue and the later statement to just hide AI use was such a phenomenal PR debacle he'll probably never get rid of.
Lutris was pretty goodβ¦
Lutris was pretty goodβ¦
Undoubtedly, the lutris scripts really made it a great community driven project.
The only reason I even have EGS installed is for the occasional free game they offer. But also Kingdom Hearts. I bought the trilogy on PC long before a Steam release was even announced, and I thought that if Tim Sweeney managed to convince Disney and Square-Enix to finally give the franchise a PC release then he must have thrown ludicrous amounts of Fortnite money to secure exclusive distribution rights.
Will be great if I can get their launcher and games running far more easily on my Steam Deck...
Let me guess. Their kernel malware is going to come to Linux next?
This is generally great news, but even better news would be if it had like 12 users after launching.
Show Tim Shittey that everyone hates him.
