I curated my life to suit my preferences. I'm working part time instead of full time and I'm pretty frugal. No drugs or alcohol. Lots of video games with friends, 3 d&d campaigns, working out with my significant other, reading, growing some peppers in the yard, designing my own TTRPG, drinking lots of (decaf) coffee and tea.

The biggest change was the realization that I can't make others happy if I'm not happy. I'm a people pleaser at heart, but constantly putting my SO's preferences ahead of mine made me depressed. We've both made concessions but we've arrived at a place we can both be happy.

  • Working out
  • Drinking little to no alcohol
  • Stoped smoking weed altogether
  • Meditating regularly
  • Spend as little time in front of a screen as possible

And in general, being kind to myself. I know I’m my biggest critic, no-one knows my flaws as well as I do. Also, I don’t HAVE to meditate, work out, or not drink alcohol all the time. I’m gonna be ok if I skip one of my three weekly workouts because I’m tired. I’m gonna be ok if I have a few beers every other month with friends.

What helps me feel at peace is making plans for myself and stick the the plan. This can be hobby, sports plan, or house chores. It's a double edged sword, because if I fail to fulfill my plans by procrastinating, I will feel very upset. So, I regularly include in my plan to do nothing.

The thing that's helped most is being kind to myself in my head.

Yes, something like: try to be "your own best friend"

Self-Care? In this economy? Best I can do is brushing my teeth once every few days. /s

(But not really "/s")

[–] FuyuhikoDate@feddit.org 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I got ya buddy! Add a daily task in your phone and use post it notes on your bed.

Not brushing your teeth in this economy is the worst you can do (been there done that!) and depression is a huge bitch.

So do it for your futureself. Go brush your teeth. NOW! And thell your futureself that they are worth every moment of self care.

Stay strong. U are not alone...

Your depressed teeth brushing reminder gang!

If your mindset is that your teeth or in fact your entire body only has to last you a couple more years before you inevitably jump of a bridge, you don't have to really take care of it. Trust me if you're not trying to die of old age, you find out that your body is incredibly resilient to neglect. So I wont be doing any of that. Cheers.

Don't do it for that reason: do it for how it makes you feel NOW, in that very moment, when it's all fresh and clean and you can go to bed without tasting all nasty. Besides, don't you want people to enjoy staring at your beautiful teefs on your corpse? /s on the latter but the former is genuine: do it for YOURSELF! But ofc you do you boo.

I hide away when I can. Lie in bed all day, watch a good show, and go get a pizza when I'm hungry.
