Is "god" now a dirty word too?

Thank you for your service 🙏

Thank god for that asterisk. If there were a vowel there, I would have been absolutely triggered and literally shaking.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Thank g*d for that asterisk. If there were a vowel there, I would have been absolutely triggered and literally shaking.

Ftfy

[–] percent@infosec.pub 1 points 5 hours ago

Oh my god, I can't believe I did that! Thank you so much

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 11 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Outstanding bait with the asterisk

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The full word is of course "gid", a disease of herbivores, especially sheep, caused by the presence of larvae of the tapeworm Taenia multiceps in the brain and resulting in a staggering gait

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago

The bone cancer will give that other kid a better appreciation of life... Oh, apparently they are dead. That bone cancer in their child will give their parents a better appreciation of...

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 66 points 1 day ago (15 children)

We're censoring the word 'God' now? Fuck me sideways.

[–] yogurtwrong@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This isn't algospeak, it is censored as an insult, like Tr*mp.

There are like at least 100 people in this thead who lost their mind moment they saw the asterisk like a conservative hearing the word "socialism"

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 5 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

I'm usually pretty good at picking up on such nuances, but I'd never think of reading that as an insult. Maybe a joke, but even then, not a very good one. Good to know for future reference, though, to prevent any further losing of the mind, so to speak. G*d knows I have little enough to spare.

[–] Squirrelanna@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 11 hours ago

I'm pretty sure people do this with contentious names or topics to avoid the people who are using it as a search term to engage in less than savory ways. People that follow them know what they mean, but people purely looking for people to get angry at don't see it in search.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

It's like you're pretending the word is so repugnant to you that you don't want the full word dirtying up your comment history. It lies in the same vane as fake outrage and sarcasm.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 20 hours ago

Pretty sure the asterisk thing is a meme in itself these days. Like when people talk about Fr*nch people

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (6 children)

I've had my 3 genie wishes planned out since I was a kid, but I'm starting to think if I can use a lot of commas in each wish I should be able to squeeze them down to 2 and use my 3rd one to wish for everyone who self-censors internet images or post titles to burst into flame.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

At least in English, commas aren't magic sentence separators; you might wish to look into the semicolon for joining independent clauses.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

They can be used similar to parentheticals to break up large, complex thoughts and format them as a single sentence. Legally and historically that is often how the comma was used, and it is grammatically correct usage.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 2 points 12 hours ago

I suppose it depends upon said genie's views on prescriptivism, heh.

How many LemmyBucks for feet pics?

Asking for a friend.

My tin-foil-hattest conspiracy theory is that it's being done inorganically to make English as a whole a taboo language.

[–] justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

can't make it what the 14th word is. is it just a typo of deletion or some satanic phallus symbol?

[–] mastertigurius@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

It was originally a typo, but now it's definitely a satanic phallus symbol.

The entanglement process of Karma is what determines what is procedurally generated in your monadic existence, but we choose these lives of ours with the specific trials we personally face as part of a larger process where we have built Heaven - a society that grows ever more perfect eternally - but found we were maladapted for it in some capacity, so we chose the life we not have to specifically unentangle ourselves from our maladaptations.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Interesting thought. Alan Watts has one that's kind of in the same vein.

Imagine you could control every aspect of your dreams, what happens, how long, everyone and everything. The first thing most of us would imagine is 100 years of absolute pleasure. Fulfilling every fantasy we could think of. And we'd wake up and think, "That was pretty good" and we'd want to do it again. And again. And again. And eventually, you'd get a little bored. So maybe one night you have a dream where you don't know exactly what will happen. It gets your heart pounding again. That little excitement of "not knowing". And so, over time, you let less and less things be under your control. A little more, night, after night, after night, until eventually, you are dreaming the life you are currently living. Except you're actually living it.

Sporting competitions are a great proof of the incompetence of god, as every team and fan parts for their team to win, but only one team wins.

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 4 points 22 hours ago

Because the losers weren't worthy
