Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

The Treaty of Fort Jackson (also known as the Treaty with the Creeks) was signed on this day in 1814 at Fort Jackson in Alabama. The treaty was agreed upon in the aftermath of the defeat of Red Stick (Upper Creek) resistance by U.S. forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

The treaty was the "largest single Indian cession of southern American land", according to historian Michael Rogin - around 23 million acres in Alabama and Georgia. The U.S. forces won with the battle with the help of allied Cherokee and Lower Creek forces friendly to the American side.

The terms of various treaties with the Creek nation would go on to be consistently violated by Americans colonizing the south.

Can I still be a leftist if I support a genocidal colonization project? And if I center the feelings of those that are committing and benefiting from the genocide?

If you say no youre an antisemite

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 10 points 6 hours ago

This whole debacle reminded me of when I saw a jewish USian teen who claimed to be "spiritually israeli" say that israel is the "most successful decolonization project ever" lmao sure just ask 99% of indigenous and colonized people worldwide what we think of your precious puppet state lmao

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 10 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

People who think gender is anywhere on the same level as race on the oppression scale get really quiet when asked to answer who's more oppressed: an israeli woman or a Palestinian man? Even with queer identities who's more oppressed, a trans lesbian israeli woman or a cishet Palestinian man?

If they have any issues answering honestly they are either in severe denial or outright brainwashed.

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 10 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

a trans lesbian israeli woman

someone pull out that "TRANS GIRLS WITH GUNS" graffiti from occupied Haifa

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 4 points 5 hours ago

LMAO wasn't even aware of that one.

There's a specter haunting hexbear, the specter of Zionism and white tears

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 12 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

"majority of Jewish people, orgs and synagogues are blood thirsty zionists, the remaining are mostly liberal zionists, or insufferable "don't commit a genocide in my peoples' name" types, only a small amount is actually anti-zionist"

the hexbear: oh so you're saying all jews are bad and we have to go nazi on them? you must like Bad Empanda, you must also be anti-semitic and hate all jews, you're a CIA plant.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 8 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

See the thing is they have deluded themselves into thinking being jewish is not only on the same level as being racialized (despite most of them being white) but EVEN more oppressed so acknowledging that it is indeed the majority of jews, orgs etc who are zionists, liberal or otherwise, is already taboo or "antisemitic conspiracies". It's a perfect cover for white people to be both their victim and genocidal selves at the same time even more than other marginalization they may have such as being queer or women or disabled. Because despite europeans being the main oppressors of jews and the ones that committed atrocities against them it's the colonized arabs and the global south that has to shut up and just grovel over and pay the price as if we haven't suffered countless holocausts either unrecognized, celebrated or not given any importance. Jewish supremacy is antisemitism being the bigotry that gets the most attention and treated as more urgent and not being able to criticize anybody in the community no matter who you are or what they have done cause you're automatically Hitler if you do lmao none of this ever gets extended to any other community of marginalized people. It is also being able to use a singular genocide nearly a century ago but racialized people just get told to "get over it" no matter how long ago or how recent our genocides were or are ongoing. And ofc it gives you the right to commit genocide yourself.

People protesting outside a synagogue selling stolen Palestinian land gets the fucking feds on your ass and calls of "growing antisemitism" on national news but shooting up a mosque gets fucking crickets. Fuck white people.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 3 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

but shooting up a mosque gets fucking crickets.

Literal neo-nazis have shot up synagogues, yet it's Palestinian supporters who have any material actions taken against them, including by Jewish groups. You have Jews pearl clutching over Arabs saying "Please stop killing us, especially our kids. We will accept a two-state solution."

Why is there no actions being taken against the KKK or Order of Nine Angels or the Aryan Brotherhood or any of a dozen other neo-nazi groups? It's because the zionist supports neo-nazis and is willing to sacrifice their own people for whatever goal they think works. And they especially love when mosques or Palestinian supporters or restaurants or whatever get attacked because it lets them farm sympathy for other people's suffering while hurting those same people, who they don't like.

I cannot take zionism or its sympathizers seriously because of this, not even getting into what happened in the Holocaust to Roma, the disabled, and LGBTQ+ people, who were not given an ethnostate and continue to face actual persecution in the so-called West. It seems so blatantly obvious zionism and the majority of Jews who support it are full of shit. It's a bunch of crocodile tears and for some reason we're all expected to pretend like it's not.

Norteños and Crips have more legitimacy as anti-hate groups than the ADL because they've at least shanked, strangled, and beat the fuck out of a bunch of nazis.

[–] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 10 points 7 hours ago

Things like that always reveal when people, overwhelmingly white ones, honest to God think that no one actually has any principles theyre willing to die over or at the very least die on the hill of and its exactly why the western "left" does jack shit

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 6 points 9 hours ago

This job is honestly whack... sticking through it just fine and gonna keep going, but this upcoming weekend, I am actually thinking to accelerate the effort I put into the audiobook narration. I already got accepted on multiple platforms, and depending on how things end up going, I might eventually gain the ability to make this a full-time thing. Not getting ahead of myself yet, though... I'll have to continue putting up with this job until I feel like that is confidently a path I can actually take.

Alhouthi4president deleted everything in their account, except for a few things, I won't clarify anything if they don't want clarify.

[–] refolde@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm imagining it's part of Hexbear's long running tradition of alienating and pushing out those who are personally affected by Israel's genocidal ambitions.

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 10 points 9 hours ago

Hexbear crackers. Can’t share specifics but it’s pretty much what you would expect.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've talked privately with them now and it's related to that in a way, sucks to see this site will never learn. Won't say more out of respect for their privacy but fuck the mods and the crackers.

[–] refolde@hexbear.net 10 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Sucks. I'm going to miss seeing their posts.

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 10 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

They may have done something similar a few months ago, unless I'm not remembering correctly. If that was the case then I hope they'd come back this time around as well.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 7 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Unfortunately from what I gather this time it's pretty much final. Not that I blame them considering that right after running out yet another person who's directly impacted by israel's actions we're having another antisemitism bs thread lmao it's a joke

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 7 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Damndeeper-sadness

But I get it. I saw that thread and yeah. Lots of the same stuff from before being rehashed. And I don't think anything is going to change this time.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 4 points 7 hours ago

Unless a place is controlled by racialized people with mental fortitude then nothing changes sadly.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

I hope they're ok.

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gay panic being legal defense disgust me and many cases of homophobic violence was done by police. Amerikkans are violent animals fueled by propaganda and I worry not many can br saved. Notwithstanding liberals who are in their sticking heads in the ground and parroting the state era.

I also remember the don't ask don't tell era where there was debte on queer people openly serving in the military. When it repealed the queer community took it as a win, equal opportunity imperialism was the end goal of the state.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

It's the whole current discourse on the trans ban in the military. Personally I'd be ok with not being legally allowed to join the biggest cause of massacres and suffering worldwide but maybe that's me not being a cracker.

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Sadly that's not how many people see it, instead they want to have a chance to "defend our freedoms" by taking it away from others far away form the US.

[–] homhom9000@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We should be celebrating hard, else what are we doing

"Oh but it disenfranchises trans people!!" Ok how about we abolish the us military and even the us as a whole then instead of letting more people join in on global massacres... No thought about all the murdered trans people by the us military even.

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

All month it's take care of old white folks fixing their stuff and I come home to do my best to look after my own parents. Not much changed from my own parents when my mom took care of rich white kids when she was younger

The amount of time and brain-calories hexbears are wasting on Dolly Parton is wild. Maybe she’s way, way more culturally influential in the states than I thought, but otherwise who gives a fuck? I don’t need an essay about how HMMMMPROBLEMATIC Rick Springfield or whoever the fuck was after they died. It’s cultural flotsam. Lib shit.

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Glad to finally see some people pushing back against the excessive Dolly Parton glazing

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Who would've thought some white chick worth 500M dollars from the South born during segregation would have skeletons in her closet?
https://slate.com/culture/2017/08/visiting-dolly-partons-dinner-show-dixie-stampede.html

Advertised as an “extraordinary dinner show … pitting North against South in a friendly and fun rivalry,” Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede is the Lost Cause of the Confederacy meets Cirque du Soleil. It’s a lily-white kitsch extravaganza that play-acts the Civil War but never once mentions slavery.

There were smatterings of black people, though I didn’t spot any who appeared to be there by themselves. Some were one half of an interracial couple, while others appeared to be there with their white co-workers or friends. Such is the appeal of Dolly, it would seem, that it crosses all racial borders.

When the trio performed an up-tempo version of “Amazing Grace,” the audience decided to clap along. They were very off-beat.

Before we could get to the games, though, we had to get through a little “history” lesson about the early days of America, beginning with live buffalo and “Native Americans.” Were the dancers and acrobats actually of Native American descent? It was hard to tell, as their performance took place entirely under black light to the tune of Parton’s 2009 song “Sha-Kon-O-Hey!” (The title of the song is intended to be a phonetic spelling of the Cherokee word for the Smoky Mountains.) As one of them flew through the air on cables, a pre-recorded voice-over described the indigenous peoples as “steeped in legend … mystery … and magic!”

At the dance’s conclusion came a swift scene change: “The magic gave way to a harsh reality when settlers came in from the east.” In one of the more true-to-history moments in the show, these native peoples weren’t seen again for the rest of the performance.

Even with that gracious assistance, however, the South won at both my performances. (According to reports from other attendees, the South doesn’t always win, but it usually does.) All the while, Roger Ballard would alternate between extolling the virtues of both sides and encouraging them to stand up and boo one another. (At both shows I attended, the South was noticeably more boisterous in its heckling.)

So while it may be a surprise to the fictional producers of Springtime for Hitler when it becomes a hit, it’s no surprise to me that Dolly Parton’s very real Dixie Stampede is a hit, too, and has been for almost 30 years. This is the same country where The Birth of a Nation was once the biggest box-office hit of all time and where Gone With the Wind still is. Dolly Parton is right about one thing: Dixie Stampede is as American as America gets.

The bathroom stalls are also segregated between northerners and southerners and the northerner sign is black lmao

:jesus-christ: ok I'm feeling better about my long comment about Dolly Parton now what the fuck

[–] SmithrunHills@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago

jesus-christ

Goes to show that white leftists will excuse any and all evil so long as none of that evil is pointed at them. If someone like JK Rowling had only targeted POC, no one but POC would care. Hell, Neil Druckmann is a good example of this

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I feel like such a weirdo for saying this and I’m torn between posting in the empoc thread or to the general site.  But I don’t have the time to field dogpiling today if the general site thinks I’m too much of an ultra for this, and it’s intended more of as introspective musing than as struggle-session fodder:  Dolly Parton has always made me uncomfortable

When did I ever even learn she existed?  Sometime in early childhood, but late enough that I’d learned that those white folks with those drawls and country-fashion and US flags were dangerous.  They were racist when I met them irl.  They were genocidal warmongers on the TV.  They glorified a culture that had murdered First Nations en masse, a culture that had tortured and enslaved Africans for generations, a culture that was now calling people who looked like me “terrorists” and doing horribly evil things.  The music that came from that culture and was inescapable on the radio, in stores, was all pro war nationalistic bullshit.  That culture was not to be trusted, and nor was anyone from it.

I didn’t know anything about Dolly Parton except that the biggest part of her brand was “white southern belle”, and so I was uncomfortable with her and did my best to just ignore her.  She didn’t stand out any more than anyone else really.  Until later, when for reasons I could not understand, it turned out she had become or perhaps had already been a meme and a queer, feminist, working class icon!

Alright, so I would just ignore that discomfort or say fine, she’s a complicated woman.  Maybe I misjudged her.  She can’t help what culture she was born into, right?  I watched 9 to 5 and thought it was fun.  Not all discomfort or bias is legit or fair.

Well then today I saw this post: https://hexbear.net/post/9405321

Fucking what.  She was part of the same wave of post-9/11 jingoistic nationalistic country music that made me detest the genre so much!  And people just roll with it?  This cover creeps me out as much as if that were the 3rd Reich’s flag and she were posing in a Nazi suit with a hakenkreuz armband.

Am I saying Dolly Parton is cancelled?  No, though that may just be cowardice on my part.  If I think about it more then maybe I will.  But, making it less about one dead woman who took some good stands and bad ones, it’s gotten me grappling more with how perplexed I’ve felt at liberals and even left-leaning people — not just white, black too! — leaning into the cowboy country wild western aesthetic.  When people were falling over themselves about Lil Nas X fusing country with hip-hop and queering it, my only reaction was “Meh — what in country can be disentangled from white supremacy?  Why would you want it?”  Everything cowboy-ey is tinged with slavery and genocide to me, and it’s weird to see anyone desiring it at all.  If you want some American Southwest desert culture that’s cooler, there were and are people living there who weren’t genocidal colonizing slavers!  I cannot shake this feeling that fetishization of “country” is inherently white supremacist, even when queer poc do it, even when they obviously don’t mean it that way.

RIP to Dolly anyway, and I’ll withhold the crabs raves out of respect for the good that she did do, but I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable with her or any presentation of her legacy that does not grapple with everything that was problematic about what she represented and did.  But that is also a problem that is much bigger than just her, and I acknowledge it isn’t fair to pin it all on her.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

A lot of country music comes from gospel which came from slaves, either as part of religious worship or while working plantations. Many slave songs were meant to prevent slaves from talking to one another while working so they didn't conspire to escape or rebel. After slaves were freed, they kept these songs as part of the emerging African-American culture.

These musical traditions then changed and were built upon, turning into genres ranging from blues to the much, much later rock n' roll. And of course as this music got popular, white people began appropriating it. Country is one such example, where whites took black folk music for themselves.

There were more than black influences on the genre, obviously (such as Irish, Cajun, and Native American musicians), but country music has always been exploitation of the suffering that produced it by claiming it for white supremacy. Some black artists have tried to reclaim the genre, yet they do not get the type of spotlight of ~~neo-nazi~~ patriotic whites. They were never played on radio stations, which meant they never had a chance of gaining notoriety and influence. The genre was flipped from being something created by former slaves to something used to segregate the airwaves.

tl;dr-- you aren't going crazy. Country is fucking weirdo shit used by whitey to have some semblance of culture. But since whitey is morally bankrupt, he is creatively bankrupt and can only steal from others.

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I think that's just the thing with Western "leftists/liberals". She obviously did a lot of good things as you pointed out. The problem is that its always with an "America first" bend. So she may have really spoken to the American working class in a way you wouldn't expect, or a feminist, or been good on LGBTQ+ issues, but that all ends when it comes to practicing anti-imperialism. Suddenly she doesn't look all that different from all the raving maniacs that claim the same culture she did.

So I get where you're coming from when you say you feel a bit uncomfortable about her legacy. I never really had much of a connection to her, but I can pick out any number of seemingly good people who also fall flat on their face when it comes to anti-imperialism (or race/religious issues). It gets even more awkward when you get a bunch of people who profess to being "anti-imperialists" getting mad at these things being pointed out.

Am I saying Dolly Parton is cancelled? No, though that may just be cowardice on my part. If I think about it more then maybe I will. A couple of weeks ago I had talked a bit about this in general terms. Too many people feel the need to appropriate an image of America's past and try a put a more POC positive spin on it and its just not all that helpful. Hanging on to the white supremacist legacy of America and "reimagining/sanatizing" it is only serving the very institution they believe they are defying.

Yes!

I always see stuff about "cowboys are gay", cowboys were colonizers, racists and land thieves.

hmmm this person did some nice things and some nationalistic things over the course of their 80 year life. better call them Hitler for good measure

That person should join Hexbear, they'd love them here

Stupid as fuck how this site will talk about racism in dog form or literally anything else before it talks about anti-black racism.
