One billionaire uses more water than every home in Los Angeles combined. To grow almonds. 80% of which are for export.

10% of all of Arizona's water goes to grow alfalfa for cows in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

We're in a drought, sure, but it could be mitigated, if the capitalist class and their lackey politicians actually gave a fuck - but they do not appear to.

I feel like we need an ominousasfuck community for stuff like this.

So maybe it could do a couple of data centers?

Yeah nothing fancy, just trying to make good use of all the water still available.

8 points, how does one count points? Like is a foot a point, and inch? Are there 3 pointers? I'm going to never look this up and live in the bewilderment of water shortages. Glass half full? Nah that's like 5 points

I think it's short for percentage points in this case. 22% minus 8 percentage points is 14%, which I assume was the fill level of some other dam which was decommissioned.

Pretty confusing phrasing, took me a minute to work out.

...Why not just say "8 percent away"?

[–] bus_factor@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

22% minus 8 percentage points is 14%.

22% minus 8% is 20.24%.

This is because 8% of 22% is 1.76%, but when using percentage points you just subtract the number.

Thanks, "8% of 22%" had crossed my mind so thanks for explaining it more succinctly.

Percent and percentage points are not the same. Ignoring the issue at hand, you will do well in life learning this lesson.

Trump: let's shut down all renewable energy, ban cheap electric cars, burn more coal, dig for more oil, open more data centers & strip citizen of the ability to oppose anything bad and label them as terrorists. "Land of the free"

let's make meat a macho thing.

Surely the manly thing would be to forage nuts, berries and mushrooms in the wilderness. Or if you want to be a little more modern, work the land and make traditional sourdough breads, jams, chutneys and wines.

At this rate I should be drowning in rhubarb wine in a few years.

Jesus Christ you really are going to invade us for our water aren't you? FML.

Huh. The lake I'm near in California has 1.4 million acre feet of water currently. Not on the map, either, even though some of those lakes have less than half that.

So begin the water wars!

[–] My_IFAKs___gone@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I thought this issue was all water under the bridge.

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Bless you sir

"Get that data center up poste haste before we lose the rest of that water!"

Mass migration is coming. Be prepared

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 week ago

I wonder how Americans would react to mass immigration of Americans from other states.
