To be fair, the whole 'white goes first' thing doesn't seem to have been implemented until the late 19th century as a way to make tournaments more consistent.
It's still probably a racist decision, I just don't know if you can blame the guy who invented chess for it.

Right? I haven't played chess in some years but I was immediately wondering about this.
When you forget to say checkmate before ending your turn.
You also can't play chess with a white square on the bottom left of the board.
Did it really matter outside of tradition?
