As much as I love the Avatar series, if he's going to continue it he needs to speed the plot up. And I say that as a pretty diehard nerd for the lore. If he needs every little thing to happen for the lore, he can have a co-writer turn it into a book, like he has for some other Avatar related things.

I'm also a diehard fan of the series and I'm really surprised that no one has attempted to adapt the material to a limited series or something. I'm talking a kids-oriented show that focuses on Na'vi rites of passage. Or a more grown-up oriented show that lets us see life in Bridgehead City (a drama about defectors or something). Hell, give me a Jemaine Clement-starring show where we follow him making the Seas of Pandora documentary you know he wants to make in-universe!
I love Frontiers of Pandora and feel like it really opens up the universe of the films for more varied story-telling.

Avatar are trash. Pretty, but garbage.
For all their technical advancements they could have been short films to showcase the techniques or Cameron could have bothered to find an actually compelling script.
Wasn't it supposed to be a trilogy?
He had planned as much as 7 total Avatar films.
But I guess the deaths of his longtime collaborators James Horner and Jon Landau hit him hard, so he's deciding to scale it back.
There was some article I read a long time ago and it's been doing at too much work propping up my enthusiasm for the franchise.
Something like an exec or somebody who would send back all these pages of notes read the script to the last one and only came back with "holy shit!".
Must've been impressed with how much it sucked.

It's a theme that didn't need more than one movie anyway. Bad guys show up and try to displace native peoples. Native peoples fight back and win. The end. (even though history shows the bad guys just come back with more firepower and win in the end through attrition)
The guy's got too much talent to waste the rest of his life on a simple one-movie plot.
I only saw the original, but the story really wasn't the point of it. The point was to showcase absolutely stunning eye candy. And to that end, I think it was quite successful.
I agree that he can do more than that, though.

I think he said that if he doesn't do the final 2 movies then he'll release them as novels, so there will at least be an ending.

I liked that the third movie ever so slightly addressed the tatic of divide and conquer used many times in colonialism. But other than that? Yeah, same as before.
IMHO the second and third movie should have been merged.

Every trailer and media buzz I saw for Alita made it look terrible. I made a joke at the films expense to a coworker and they immediately told me how it was one of their favorite films.
On a lark I saw it and was surprisingly amazed by it. It has its problems, the boyfriend character and the stupid eyes, but it's a solid film.
I would love to see where that series goes. (And I know I could read the source material, but I'm hoping it'll continue someday.)
It feels like this guy has done nothing but Avatar for like half of his career. I get wanting a franchise that makes it easy to push boundaries in visual effects, but holy hell he needs to move on.
Put the water and the fire and whatever into films with better plots.

Didn't even bother with the third.
Why make more? No one asked for a trilogy 10 years after the first. Everyone forgot about it except James.
I honestly wonder if he completely lost his mind in the 2010's and executives were just politely nodding because his movies can make over a billion.
The first wasn't even good enough for a sequel. It was just a vehicle for his 3D tech he was developing.

The second AVATAR movie was the best!
I wasn't into drugs at the time, but I wish I was, because I would have loved getting high as fuck and watching them swim with that whale for like 1.5 hours on IMAX. That shit was magical. Honestly, the only thing that could have possibly made that movie even better was MORE whale and less plot.

James Cameron is in no way past his prime. He is a highly accomplished technical movie maker and his contributions have had a positive, lasting impact on the industry. Avatar will not be remembered for its storytelling, but it will be remembered for the technical advances that came from it.
Avatar will be remembered for shoving 3d down our throats for over a decade.

I've seen all 3 Avatar movies in the theater, and not once was I forced to watch it in 3D. You probably need to find a different theater if yours is shoving shit down your throat.
3d tv's, 3d photo cameras. Every movie in the cinema had to be in 3d. It was hard to avoid. Sure you could go to a different showing but most movies were forced in 3d or a smaller screen.

Yeah and I told the truth. If there's 10 showings of a movie and only 1 is 2d, it hard to avoid. Even movies not even filmed in 3d. Avatar will be completely forgotten but I will always be pissed about that 3d bullshit.
There are so many other movies being made. He isn't taking projects from anyone else.
Not sure how Cameron making movies isn't giving others a chance.
And directing isn't like playing sports. You can be old and in your prime. You certainly learn more about making movies and the tools required the longer you do it.
