I don’t see a thread about Missouri, hope you don’t mind if I hijack this for a moment because I see folks on Reddit baffled about why Cori Bush lost and I’m banned there so getting it out here.

I feel like there’s a big disconnect between national commentators like Hasan and MikefromPA and locals in St. Louis. Bush - whether it’s fair or unfair - has a major reputation in St. Louis. I guess the best way to say it is… folks in her district see her as a grifter. The faith healing stuff, tornado relief funds, hiring her husband on the campaign, that controversy with her security team when she was in congress. I’ve given up trying to figure how much of it is true, but that doesn’t really matter; people in St. Louis believe it’s true. Even people that like her politics think she’s sus. And Wesley Bell, outside of the Israel/AIPAC stuff, is generally well aligned with voters in MO-1. He’s affable and seen as professional and reliable. American voters and Dem voters in particular are turning on Israel, but I would also caution against assuming it’s Dem voters top priority.

St. Louis DSA needs to get someone else other than Cori Bush. I don’t think she has any political future in St. Louis.

But in more positive news, amendments 4 and 5 are getting stomped, like the “no” votes are putting up Assad numbers. Amendment 4 would have eliminated income taxes and replaced them with sales taxes, and 5 would have eliminated the ability for the people to vote on constitutional amendments and pass with a simple majority (which is good in MO, because when it comes down to individual issues MO voters are to the left of Dem politicians)

Edit: to clarify, not only would amendment 5 stopped voters from being able to amend the constitution, but the GOP-dominated legislature would also get the ability to amend the constitution by a simple majority. So for example, while abortion is currently legal the legislature would have banned it day one had amendment 5 passed.

Faith healing stuff? Lol uh oh what

[–] Weydemeyer@lemmy.ml 16 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Yes she runs a shady faith healing business. I think the left can do better than her.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

damn, she's either a grifter who shouldn't be in charge of anything or a true believer who shouldn't be allowed to make decisions or give advice.

[–] danisth@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I don't think this is true. She has some beliefs that are out there from where I'm sitting, but I'm guessing they're pretty common where she is, but the business claim seems to be false. Looks like someone fell for an AIPAC funded campaign set on de-legitimizing Bush. Sure maybe she's burned now and DSA needs to run someone else, but lets put the blame where it belongs.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

i'm mostly seeing rags but apparently she talks about it in some autobiography. zero tolerance for faith "healing".

[–] Weydemeyer@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago

That’s why I said that whether it’s true or not, locals typically believe it’s true. The problem is even if the faith healing part isn’t true or is mostly untrue, there are other factors that either cannot be explained away (like her absentee record in congress or hiring her husband for her campaign) and she has not done a good job of providing answers.

[–] danisth@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Any fact checking done on the business? Can't find anything solid. Looks like she made some claims about healing a women's tumour, but that's hardly damning imo.

I dislike rooting for a proud proponent of capitalism like El-Sayed, but I do like the prospect of watching his zionist trash opponent get blown the fuck up. I'm very curious how the general will go for him if he wins the primary.

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

Agree, but i have never heard him punch left, so he has my respect for that (until he does, but i don't see it happening because he is in the same boat as the DSAers, this are his electoral allies).

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

i hope the muslim guy wins mostly because of the meltdown libs and chuds will have

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

What about the fact that he wants to stop all aid to Israel?

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

The [upcoming] meltdown is cool too 🤝

[–] Antiwork@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

I don’t have many rules for these candidates and really couldn’t care less if they call themselves Socialists or not. Protect leftists from getting murdered, don’t rip into AES, and stop funding the military/be anti Zionist anti imperialist . Outside of that have some progressive agenda and I’m good. They ain’t bringing in the change we want regardless. That’s on us to organize.

[–] DerRedMax@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Wow I love how I get the Kalshi betting odds before I get actual data!

[–] EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

Holy shit this society is cooked.

[–] Hohsia@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Misinformation is such a fuck. Apparently Stevens’ team convinced a bunch of POC that Obama endorsed her (he did not). Might be enough to get the Zionazi across the finish line. Fuck

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

jail for fraud pls

[–] SerLava@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

60 MILLION dollars didn't work

60 fucking MILLION dollars from AIPAC.

This is crazy. In a swing state. In the rust belt. They are fucking PANICKING right now.

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I wouldn't declare victory yet - looks like it's tightened up quite a bit.

[–] SerLava@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

You're right but it's still a pretty big gulf at the moment, and I don't see people online saying that he needs to be any farther ahead with regards to the order of votes being counted. It did go from like 5.5 to 3.5 so far

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

The Cascadia flag is gonna get 5x larger if AIPAC wins this

Doubt this will happen, but a possible Abdul El-Sayed victory. Please make AIPAC start considering the democrats a lost cause for their project.

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Electoralism is cringe lol, even when is directly against Israeli interests ig

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

yeah it's getting a bit frustrating that we can't just apply the no secretarian rule to electoralism and anti electoralism and chill out a bit

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"No sectarianism" is pretty dead tbh, but id be in favor of it on this comm at least.

We are totally aware that bourgeois electoralism is not the revolution, but id like to discuss without having to declare that at the top of every post.

[–] SerLava@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Yeah my synthesis is that

  • electoralism can do small but significant things
  • they'll probably just get fed up and start blasting us
  • political work is seen by most people as one of only two ways to demonstrate an ability to lead a society. The other is being a capitalist.
  • burning shit down is just going to make relatively comfortable people think you're crazy and violent
  • there's value in demonstrating that you already tried the nice way. They did this in Russia for example
  • if America came under the control of even a super half-ass demsoc regime, it would probably (probably) be much less willing to kill leftists in other countries than Democrats or Republicans. This can give a ton of breathing room to people worldwide

yeah it's getting a bit frustrating that we can't just apply the no secretarian rule to electoralism and anti electoralism and chill out a bit

Watching the horse race between pedophile hitler and progressive hitler is not really fun for people that have checked out altogether.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

that's national elections. state and local dem primaries are sometimes between not hitler and neoliberal hitler

[–] WIIHAPPYFEW@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

Just tuning in for elections, gotta thank god

Don’t know why, but tonight seems kinda odd

No AIPAC funded libs, Thanedar’s gone

And on Fox News, I already hear squealing hogs

If Abdul wins, Hakeem Jeffries is gonna come out unto the floor with a keffiyeh wrapped around his neck.

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Michigan is going to be like a Peru redux, 3 weeks to get everything counted out however long it was

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

A Bluesky take from earlier

I'll be disappointed if Stevens wins, but mostly what you should take away from tonight is that the coalition really is divided between factions with lots of genuine support, we can't wish the other side away, and we're all going to have to learn to live with each other if we want to win.

fuck that, drive the moderates and the fake progressives who supported genocide from the party

preferably into the sea

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Bluesky's version of solidarity is - of course - shit but it also makes me laugh. It's "building coalitions". Everybody the left of Bernie has to do what the neolibs want.

coalition really is divided between factions with lots of genuine support,

No it's not , shoving $50 or $60 million dollars into a campaign to defeat a primary candidate is not support. And it's obvious it's not support because if Stevens had won there's no more reason for AIPAC to keep shoving money into her campaign and they wouldn't have because it's not in their interest since there's no difference between her and a Republican on Israel.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

lots of genuine support

On one side you have loads of actual grassroots support. On the other side you have AIPAC putting $70,000,000 into a primary.

They are the same!

[–] Hohsia@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Oh god. I looked into this race a bit and I’m afraid to give any input

Online at least, I noticed a mix of bitter khive-types, moderate democrats and Zionists coming to stevens’ defense and smearing Abdul. Funny because I don’t see anything other than early Obama. Fucking electoralism dude

I haven’t seen anything even slightly resembling mamdani, but maybe I’m just not looking hard enough. Would happy to be proven wrong

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

He is not even DSA so don't look too hard. He has $50m spent against him by AIPAC though, so definitely keep that in mind.

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I like that he wants to completely end support not just of Israel but also Saudi Arabia.

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

Also pro-m4a (not cynically, by my judgement) and against corporate election spending. Doesn't punch at people to his left so he's the least-worst lib

[–] Antiwork@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

He got it! Let's fucking go!
