He fort for the gay

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 18 hours ago

This reminds me of the recent removal of the Enola Gay in US government history archives because LGBT+ is DEI.

Forgetting that gay not only has multiple meanings, but only predominately referred to homosexuality in the 1980s.

I remember looking it up as a kid. 1970s era dictionaries did not include the present definition.

No way. I love in a lttle hamlet called Filthy Cumslut and the same thing happened.

[–] LemmyPlaceDN@europe.pub 7 points 21 hours ago

Such a beautiful name shouldn't be tarnished by bigoted corporations

[–] viertesauge@feddit.org 60 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Every since then it is specificly illegal to ban residents from fort gay from online services. Also known as Moore's Law

[–] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 6 points 10 hours ago

That's the one where the gay population doubles roughly every two years, amirite?

[–] FluidBeef@quokk.au 12 points 19 hours ago

That’s an absurd word to ban in a swear filter anyway.

I seem to recall this kid getting banned from facebook bc his real name was batman suparman

[–] xeno_the_warrior_prince@lemmy.dbzer0.com 37 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

The word or string "ass" may be replaced by "butt", resulting in "clbuttic" for "classic", "clbuttroom" for "classroom", "buttignment" for "assignment", and "buttbuttinate" for "assassinate".

This is seriously one of the funniest things I've ever read. Like gosh, I'd recommend everyone give that article a full read. I couldn't even get mad at the stupidity. I'm bookmarking this to read again when I have a bad day.

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 4 points 10 hours ago

Buttbuttinate sounds like one of those stupid censored words like unalive, grape...

[–] thebestaquaman@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

In October 2020, a paleontology conference's virtual meeting platform blocked various words including "bone" (...)

There's a lot of gems here

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 16 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Peter Assegieg had to change his name to get on the ballot!

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Not gonna lie, Pete BUTTigieg does sound like a stereotypical gay character in an 80s sitcom.

[–] GiantRobotTRex@lemmy.today 15 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I see this all the time in Elden Ring. So many players want the word "Knight" in their name but it just ends up rendering as "K***ht". Also the substring "ho" comes up a lot and is censored.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 4 points 16 hours ago

These days they won't let knights say Ni

[–] thenoirwolfess@fedinsfw.app 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Two or three services blacklisted something in my username, Lyra Lycan. To this day I never found out what, why or which language

[–] Sc00ter@lemmy.zip 3 points 15 hours ago

Took me a very long time to understand why my go to, Scooter, was being blocked... extra harsh filter catching "cooter" was the culprit. Only discovered because something just * the string so my name was S******

I mean if using UTF-8 a single "character" can be twice the size of that. Depending on what counts as a character it can be even bigger. There's no way this wouldn't go **rribly wrong.

[–] CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works 4 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

In October 2004, it was reported that the Horniman Museum in London was failing to receive some of its email because filters mistakenly treated its name as a version of the words horny man.

There are a lot of gems in the article.

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world -1 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

One of the legit uses of AI is moderation that goes beyond string pattern matching.

[–] stevles@aussie.zone 14 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Fun fact, Google, Google Maps and Wikipedia all existed in 2010. All they had to do was spend an entire 10 seconds, less than the time it took to suspend the account, to find out it was a genuine location.

[–] groet@feddit.org 6 points 10 hours ago

They knew it was a real place. They knew the filter would ban people based on real, actual names. They also knew making the filter better would cost more money than getting sued a few times.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 3 points 18 hours ago

And when it was appealed you would think the first thing the reviewer would do is search the net. Wild that it even got that far.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 2 points 17 hours ago

Yeah, but where’s the fun in that?

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 20 hours ago

Gayming history at its finest!

[–] clockwork_octopus@lemmy.world 8 points 21 hours ago

Hahaha I wonder if they did the same thing with anyone from Dildo, Newfoundland

[–] hypeerror@sh.itjust.works 12 points 23 hours ago

So if you were having a same sex wedding would you drive there just to send out invites so that the postmark read "Ft. Gay"

[–] botbot@feddit.org 21 points 1 day ago
[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All this fucking censorship needs to stop.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 points 15 hours ago

The current future outlook of the internet is bleak. Everything will be controlled by a dozen companies and all content must be appropriate for teens

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Where I live, there used to be an Officer Gay in our police. He retired a while ago, but just imagine the possibilities. There was graffiti. Soo much graffiti.

Like, this was a legitimate word, once, used for names and such.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Flintstones theme song....

"We'll have a gay old time"

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's why Fred and Barney didn't wear pants!

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

And neither did Wilma or Betty come to think of it.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

It's the stone age. Pants hadn't been invented yet.

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

"It's the stone age. Pants hadn't been invented yet.", said the creepy director to the actress

( You reminded me of this https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/george-lucas-carrie-fisher-wear-underwear-star-wars/ )

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago (4 children)

A lot of events like this not this one but a lot boil down to English centrism like that Shiitake issue or the Quebec website who went by the acronym cum.

[–] Lemmert@reddthat.com 2 points 10 hours ago

Yeah I remember playing Fortnite back in high school and asking a friend if he could play via the in game chat. The problem was that I wrote "Kunt ge?" so the whole thing got censored

I've seen USians complaining about our word for black people, ignoring that calling someone black (like the color) used to be as offensive to us as the N word is to them, while our equivalent to the N word was the non-racist option. Older people who haven't caught up with recent trends might still find referring to people as black offensive.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 6 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Poor old Nasser getting his name censored to N***er

[–] FluidBeef@quokk.au 1 points 19 hours ago
