'Modern' always seems to boil down to 'drain all the color'.

[–] Archimedes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 20 hours ago

I can't smoke a pipe in my tweeds here! It would look ridiculous.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

went from cozy to clinical

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ever since the 90s, theres been a concerted effort to delete Whimsy from design, aesthetics, and style, and reduce everything to black, beiges, greys and white.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

thats what the exterior of my house is. inside is more like the first shot color scheme

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

You monochrome types should just use e-ink screens for your computer.

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Change out the carpet, fine, but why that God awful laminate?Update the cushions, great. Paint the beams and fireplace, short term thinking to destroy something that will now forever need work and updating. I hope you drywalled over the wall panels and didn't just slap paint on them. It is a current "look". Will be out of date/trend in a couple years - far shorter than the other look that took 30 years to be dated and now would be retro.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (3 children)

That grey laminate flooring pisses me off like nothing else in cheap home remodeling. It's embossed with wood grain but what fucking real wood is grey like that? It's the 2020s equivalent of 1970s faux wood paneling.

[–] aBundleOfFerrets@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ancient abandoned barns in the countryside tend to have grey wood like that, usually full of holes though

this looks like AI

[–] Donebrach@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Love they left the structural fireplace CRT TV. god I’m tired of AI rage slop

[–] DonkeyStar@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

It’s load bearing.

[–] musubibreakfast@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

You never built a crt into your fireplace? It's super effective. I stacked my vcr and dvd player on top into the chimney.

Who puts a fucking square Table into a circular seating arrangement!? Fecking lunatics who are apparently also scared of color.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 91 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Unless someone has more information on this, I'm going to chalk this up to AI-generated rage bait.

The kitchen area still has the same items on that shelf, there's an ugly hole where the old CRT TV is (despite the room being “finished” looking), the reflection on the TV is still the same, and the patio turned into an office meeting room. I'm not going to spend time on perspective calculations, but something about the beams on the roof and the placement of the railing look off.

[–] BluJay320@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It was the legs on the table in the pit that stuck out to me first

Whoever decided to put a rectangular table in a curved space is completely unqualified to make design decisions.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (3 children)

That table is going to demand so many legs in sacrifice...

[–] Scrogu@lemmy.zip 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bullshit. Someone just used an ai filter on a picture for internet points.

[–] SeventySeven@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The AI even kept the CRT TV in the "after" pic lmao

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Nothing says Modern Decor like a CRT TV

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

What do you guys use for a TV stand?

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 days ago

CRTs are peak for retro gaming

But I can't imagine the kind of person who would love retro gaming would destroy such a beautiful room like this

This looks like an AI edit rather than an actual renovation.

The shelf thing on the left has exactly the same items on it. Why would they keep the hole with the CRT TV in it? Also I'd hope that nobody would actually put a square table in a round space.

[–] kamikazerusher@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Also notice that the handrail in the original photo has turned into a divider in the makeover. It’s a subtle perspective change but one that wouldn’t make sense in reality. AI wouldn’t be able to discern that properly.

[–] dan@upvote.au 1 points 1 day ago

Good catch! I didn't notice that initially.

[–] Bubs@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago

100% an AI edit

You can use the cross-eye trick like everyone does to cheat on spot the difference puzzles. The two images have perfectly identical perspectives that you could only achieve if you mounted a camera perfectly and never touched it throughout the entire construction process.

They painted the beams.. they. Painted. The beams.

It looks like a prison.

My uncle used to design and build houses. Normally he didn't work for anyone - he'd take out a loan, buy a piece of land, design a house custom fit to the contours of the land, subcontract some parts, but he did the carpentry with some hired help, and when it was all done, he'd sell it (he was a realtor too) and as far as I know always made a profit, though some did better than others...

One year I went to work for him. But he was doing it differently that time, some wealthy developer had hired him to build his own house. I remember him talking about what a big mistake that was turning out to be, the guy kept changing his mind about what he wanted when we were halfway done with something - for example when he saw the rough openings for the windows, he decided they weren't big enough and he wanted bigger. Problem was, my uncle had already ordered the windows (custom sized of course) and they were already built, just not delivered yet... But the guy had money to burn, so he paid for both sets... Anywho, my uncle had designed the roof to be held up by some hefty beams, and had intended them to be unpainted, so had sourced the high quality (expensive) ones. After we set the beams- most by crane, but one short one was in such an odd position we had to do it by hand- heaviest thing I've ever lifted and I only had one end... a motorcycle engine was light in comparison... anywho, he brought his wife to look at the progress, she took one look at the beams and said "... and we'll paint those lavender..." I could just about hear the steam coming from my uncle's ears.

Beams? Mf, they painted the rocks!

I'm never hiring a home designer.

I will never understand people that paint hardwoods or natural stone with white paint.

That whole phase where everyone was painting their kitchens white killed me. That ruined so many gorgeous cabinets.

They painted the stone? 🤢

(You know, assuming that this isn't ai)

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People actually paint bricks, and it disturbs me. Bricks are so porous, and so unpainting them is an ordeal to say the least. I never understood painting brick. Brick looks nice. They made them look nice right from the brickyard.

Anyone read that in Hank Hill’s voice? It even feels in character with how into that whole neighborhood parade of homes competition thing he was.

I'm fine with the 2010s era minimalist decor.

But painting over stone and high quality wood panels is crazy. If you want the minimalist look, then this wasn't the house you start with. Fucking Beetlejuice ass joists.

AI or not, I hate the modern trend of home colors being grey, black, and white. I don't care about the "professional look" or "modern design", its my home not a workplace. First thing i did was paint my house when I got it and even though I don't love every color I chose it gave it a major face lift from the dull grey walls. The yellow I chose for one wall is bathed in sunlight and really makes my wooden toned furniture and green leaved house plants pop out against it.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The colors of neutrality so you don’t actually live there and can leave it that way to sell it. The “real estate ad” color palette.

Laminate flooring from the discount aisle of the home improvement store. White base paint from the discount aisle of the home improvement store. Imitation leather from the.... You get the point

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

How very dystopian.

Hey a fuckpit's a fuckpit. By the looks of it, they have the money for someone to clean off that upholstery. More bothered by that "landlord style" painting of the stone wall. Would have been a great accent.

Natural materials people! And then leave them to age naturally and gracefully!

Everyone bitches about how fake everything has become. And then they go and do things like the right hand picture. Idiots. Idiots, the lot of them.

I think too many people are just being cintrariannbecause this style is popular now. I think it looks good.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

The pic on the left looks lived in, just needed an update on the carpet and cushions. Pic on the right looks like the inside of a lich's phylactery.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 6 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Only issue with the left photo is the carpet. Replace it with plank/tile and it’s all good.
