I came during the lemmy world ml blahaj wars ("People of NATO", "Preemptive de-federation as a last resort") and I never thought I would be with the site for so many years but it's probably because this is the only site with the best selection of emojis I've seen.
People can be very negative and irony poisoned about Hexbear, but it's genuinely the best internet space I've found in my life and it's such a relief having you all on the other side of the screen. Thanks y'all for being such an amazing community

I remember joining roughly a week later (on my first acc here), and I was super excited for the site "that got off reddit and is much better off this way", as I was told back then. Safe to say, I agree to this day, and I'm happy to call you guys my comrades and fellow bears. 
I'm glad to have found this place even if I was 3 years late, it has done its part shaping my worldview and it really helped me a lot when the Palestine genocide had started and all I could hear outside here at the time was straight out of Mossad's orders and I truly felt insane sometimes

My funniest post was a bad post that was like "whoever reports this for the funniest reason in 24 hours is the official reason this thread is removed"
It lasted like 2 hours. I can only imagine that a mod looked at their computer, saw like 30 reports, and freaked out like they were about to go into defcon1. They looked, saw that they all said Reason: beanis, and rolled their eyes.
I believe the actual result was having it locked "at user request"

Yeah, Hexbear is ultimately the offshoot of /r/chapotraphouse. The subreddit was quarantined for a time and then eventually banned. In the last few days people were spamming a discord server to serve as a lifeboat to carry the community until a site could be built. Not sure how people knew the ban hammer was coming, but a few thousand people hopped aboard and a few months later chapo.chat was born, initially a modified fork of Lemmy which precluded federation because of the extent of the modifications. At some point we renamed ourselves Hexbear to distance ourselves from the Chapo Trap House podcast. The name was derived from this picture of a bear 
, which looks hexagonal, that was being posted about in the subreddit shortly before the ban with the title "check out this dope ass bear."
Iirc we knew the ban was coming because it was borderline impossible for a community to be unquarantined. You only get quarantined after you attract the attention of the admins and it's super unlikely that a community of I think 100k+ isn't going to include some people breaking the rules.
I guess I missed most of the funny struggle sessions. Outdoor cats, merely an echo to me...

Being strictly associated with the Chapo Trap House name has actively blocked us from being an option for a number of organizers as the pod is increasingly viewed by other leftists as more associated with stupidpol and SocDem politics than other more leftist causes.
This site and its community has grown into something far more dynamic than just the fans of a SocDem political podcast. We have comrades from every tendency and continent talking together, finding solibearity, and yes sometimes fighting to the death.
