So here in Ontario Canada there's a lot of wildfire smoke, due to almost-certainly-climate-change-induced wildfires. My city's air quality is current among the worst in the world. It's literally as high as the "from 1 to 10+" index used by government.

In photography there's a rule of thumb for proper exposure called "sunny 16". Set your camera's aperture to f/16, and set your shutter speed to the opposite of your ISO (light sensitivity). So for an ISO of 200, set your shutter speed to 1/200th of a second. On a sunny day with a clear sky, this will give you a properly exposed photo of subjects that are in direct sunlight.

I just took this photo of the sky at local noon, using the sunny 16 rule, from my apartment window. Forgive the out of focus dirty window, I'm not going outside or opening a window today.

Started reading This Soviet World in preparation for the upcoming reading group on c/soviet, as I like to get ahead and share my thoughts to get the ball rolling in these kinds of groups. Started tearing up a little bit with how beautifully Anna Louise Strong depicts the rising communal spirit of the people, where everyone sees technological advancement, the discovery of new resources, as a part of the common good and not something for someone else to exploit.

It reminds me of the Soviet time capsules from students, unearthed after the dissolution. Such hope and love for the future, dashed (for a time). It's our duty to bring about that better world, even if we are set back by enormous obstacles. We can do it, humanity has done it before and it has done it several times since.

The "criticism" of The Odyssey not having any Greek actors is obviously farcical, but I do think they should have put Stavros Halkias in it

A while ago on the side of the road, I found a discarded rear rack from some bike. It took some doing but I strapped it to my mountain bike amd have been hauling big bags of groceries strapped down with bungee cables home. Rear rack owns.

Trying to make c/soviet a bit more active now that the comm is open again, might as well! It's nice to actually see what the Soviet Union actually was, to humanize its existence, not just read about it alone. It helps us connect our current struggle to what they went through. It means we carry the torch forward.

So one of my co-workers is disgustingly heartless. My work is bwtween my house and the nearest grocery store so I was walking by around 1pm and there was a dude at one of the patio tables who looked to be nodding out, didnt think much about it until I got to work at 3 and the guy was still there in the exact same position. It's 35 degrees out today, I asked the server who had been working the day and she said he hadnt moved. So I said to call a fucking ambulance, got the guy inside and sat him somewhere cooler, ambulance took another 2 hours to arrive. So this guy was passed out in the heat at a restaurant table where she is a server, this table is directly across the sidewalk from the front door, she would have a clear view all day of this dude rotting in the sun and juat ignored it. Like, first off, it's a table at a restaurant so when he sat down he should have gotten water and a menu in the first place, and then there's the basic humanity element where you dont let someone maybe die 30 feet from where you're standing. She's dead to me now.

I need people adjacent to recovery spaces, but not necessarily in a recovery space if that makes sense. My girlfriend did something yesterday that I considered to be pretty bad. I know anybody who regularly attends meetings would never do this, but she’s never been a meeting person so she doesn’t understand a lot of recovery stuff, although she is 2 years sober from alcohol and 15 from opiates so she has struggled with addiction in the past

Re-reading lotr and find it interesting how completely unimpressed I am by the writing, the story, the poems. Compared to when I read it at 16 years of age.

It's really pretty reactionary too, and so male centric it hurts, and the elitism oh my god... And kind of boring tbh, I was bored with the war stuff even on the first read as a teenager, but now I am just bored with all of it.

Not sad that I've changed this much.

One of my most toxic traits is [every single opinion I've ever had about Japanese comics] and it's pretty sad I sometimes see yuri tumblr users posting panels of yuri manga with a caption like "awawawawa" or "this series has the most unsubtle metaphor for two girls having oral sex that I've ever seen", and I slightly envy and deeply admire them. I'm getting pretty convinced of the angle that Graham got vapourised by a missile in Ukraine. There was a discrepancy of a day around when he visited and when the place got hit, and he was meant to go on Meet The Press not long after. Since he had other commitments booked after his staff had to think up something fast to explain why he couldn't go on and explains the vague "sudden illness" excuse for the people that get the best medical care. Otherwise they'd have strung this along like McConnell until some window or whatever for this election had closed.

Most of the time I try a new recipe ill look at a few different versions of whatever I want to make to get a better idea of what I should do and it feels like 95% of indie cooking blogs are just copying word for word from either bigger websites or each other

After years of watching Space Ghost Coast to Coast over and over again via torrent, I'm watching the "official" version on youtube TV and every single change and censored line is like a dagger to my brain.

They replaced Zorak saying "kill" with the word "beat" in one line spoken to Bobcat Goldthwait. But the really lazy part? THEY TOOK THE WORD "BEAT" FROM EARLIER IN THE SAME LINE! IT SOUNDS LIKE A FUCKING YOUTUBE POOP!

And then there's what they didn't censor. Like any of the transphobic 90's jokes. Those stab me in the brain in a different way when they come up. There's not that many (only two in the whole series I think?) but literally the first joke told by a guest in the first episode is one so that kinda sets an unfortunate tone.

I'm not sure why you would assume I'm American. I mean, you happen to be right in this case, but I'm still not sure why you'd assume that.

Sometimes my dog is sleeping and you can tell that she's barking in her dream, it's so adorable. She'll make short, high-pitched noises in her sleep that kinda sound like hiccups. Sometimes she wags her tail in her sleep too. I really wonder what her dreams look like.

There's this uncle in China who runs a restaurant, and went viral for desperately trying to convince people not to come, but it's not working.

It started when a food blogger with millions of online followers happened to visit the restaurant, and the owner would repeatedly ask the blogger not to brag about the food, and to not make him too popular. The video went viral, because people thought he was using some sort of reverse psychology on them. Turns out he just prefers the easier and more peaceful lifestyle of serving a few dozen customers a day. People began showing up in droves to try his food. Influencers and celebrities included. He then left tons of fake 1 star reviews to deter people, but no one is falling for it.

In interviews he only talks about how bad his food is, and how it will make you shit out of your doodoo ass. Unsurprisingly, this backfired as well. It made even more people want to come, so now the poor guy is suffering from success.
