On this day in 1789, a crowd of nearly one thousand protesters stormed the Bastille in Paris, France, a major event in the French Revolution, commemorated annually as "Bastille Day".

In the months running up to the uprising, the people of France were facing a dire economic crisis, food shortage, and increased militarization of Paris on orders of King Louis XVI. The Bastille was an armory and prison, perceived by many as a symbol of royal authority in the city.

On the morning of July 14th, a crowd of approximately one thousand people surrounded the Bastille, calling for the surrender of the prison, the removal of its cannon, and the release of the arms and gunpowder stored there.

After negotiations stalled, the crowd surged into the courtyard of the Bastille and were fired upon by troops in the garrison. In the carnage that followed, ninety-eight protesters and one defender of the Bastille were killed.

Governor Marquis de Launay, fearing his troops could not hold out, capitulated to the crowd and opened up the Bastille doors. He was captured and dragged towards the Hôtel de Ville in a storm of abuse. While the crowd debated his fate, the badly beaten Launay shouted "Enough! Let me die!", kicked a pastry cook in the groin, and was then promptly stabbed to death.

As news of the successful seizure of the Bastille spread throughout the country, revolutionaries established parallel structures of power for government and militias for civic protection, burned deeds of property, and in some cases attacked wealthy landlords.

King Louis XVI first learned of the storming the next morning through the Duke of La Rochefoucauld. "Is it a revolt?" asked the King. The duke replied: "No sire, it's not a revolt; it's a revolution."

Honestly don’t care if the odyssey is good because Christopher Nolan is one of the most overhyped directors in history imo

Truly ruins it for me

I dont know who .ade the pizza dough on Monday but I want their head rn. It was a slow night and I need the .oney so I let other people go early. Then got a bunch of last minute takeouts. Nothing that would be a huge deal or really fuck up my close...so I thought. The dough we have going today is just awful, especially what we got down to near the end of the night. It was from 2 days ago which is normally perfect, so I think someone fucked up making it. Cause making one large pizza took me 6 attempts and 40 minutes. It was this weird combo of elasticity and fragility where it wouldnt stay stretched and would snap back to where it was or it would just tear. I could manage the normal sized ones for the order but the sixteen inches drove me up the fucking wall. 2 dough were just DOA before I even tried putting topping on, one got a hole in the oven and another had a patched hole bake weird so it jutted out on the bottom just a bit so when I took it out of the oven it snagged the paddle and fell on the fucking floor. By this point I was wondering why this guy wouldnt just go somewhere else. I eventually got something through but under any other circumstances there is no way I would serve it. I've been doing this for 5 years and can compensate for a bad batch of dough pretty easy, until today. Kept me at work 20 extra minutes to finally get it done and clean up all the mess made from the 6 attempts.

I think it's fair the same way jobsites sell my info to people I should be able to buy the info of the person who posted whatever job I applied for and address them by name number and address whenever they never respond to me. The amount of ghost listings would go down I beat

Jumped back on an Elden Ring save after ages and man, everyone has a point about the second half being arse with copping big hits from everything. I did the DLC on this character way underleveled, played a bunch of Nightreign, then I've come back to the base game and once you get to the Mountain Of The Giants everything just kicks your arse. Why do the main bosses in the DLC feel more fair than that random black gargoyle before the staircase?

I hate my options for joining a communist party:

  • Venerable old communist party with more than a century of history. Small, old-fashioned with lots of greying hair. Writes articles and newsletters read by other communists. Holds party congresses to pass proclamations read by other communists. Are antiimperialists and anticapitalists. Has no visible public presence. Does not seem to have any opinion whatsoever on LGBTQ issues or racism which at best shows that they're a bunch of boomers who are stuck in the politics from their youths, at worst belies reactionary positions that they are ashamed to share.
  • Like above but smaller. Runs serious news media on a shoestring budget. Ran a list for the last local election that got 0.1 percent of the vote.
  • Like above but even smaller. Runs a bookstore close to where I live.
  • Young, energetic and always present at public events. Has been successful in gaining some kind of public presence. Can build a website that doesn't look like something from the early 2000's. Has good solid positions on racism and queerphobia. They are also a bunch of trots who shits on Stalin for no reason whatsoever.

I have the same options plus one maiost something that is just too all over the place to even describe, they show up into protests with black leather gloves and jackets on for some reason. Even in 30C heat.

Fuck my life one of the chill managers at my job is moving to a different location. Now I either gotta deal with a new manager & hope they're chill (unlikely) or they're going to try and promote me which is even worse

[–] Impenetrouble@hexbear.net 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Don't do the latter. I'm still recovering from the same dilemma.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 2 points 9 hours ago

Oh yea I'm avoiding it at all costs, I'm already a supervisor/flex manager & that's as high as I'm willing to go. Any further and:

  1. they put me on salary, fuck that

  2. they'll involve me in hiring/firing, fuck that

  3. I'll be forced to engage in more head office/corporate bullshit, fuck that

Where I am I get to do the hands on stuff while doing a little bookkeeping/paperwork and that's fine by me. I'd rather quit & look for a new job than become an actual manager

The fact the auto translate completely fixed the broken grammar and made it weirdly formal?????

Google translate and probably others have switched from the original translation system using transformers to ones using an LLM, it gets it wrong more often but is supposed to 'smooth' the translation

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 1 points 11 minutes ago

I thought LLMs were transformers? That's what the T in ChatGPT stands for.

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 2 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Yeah that figures. In the original, the cat narrator is a person using deliberately broken cutesy grammar. So something like "Suddenly my poop from butt comes out" is a better translation.

spoilerApparently this as nothing to do with gender identity, feminine expression etc, its from the 50's an the artist is commenting on razors now being marketed to women to shave legs etc when they'd been exclusively marketed to men prior

I need people adjacent to recovery spaces, but not necessarily in a recovery space if that makes sense. My girlfriend did something yesterday that I considered to be pretty bad. I know anybody who regularly attends meetings would never do this, but she’s never been a meeting person so she doesn’t understand a lot of recovery stuff, although she is 2 years sober from alcohol and 15 from opiates so she has struggled with addiction in the past

CW: Drugs (no, my girlfriend didn’t do drugs in front of me, I wouldn’t care about that

So my girlfriend is moving, and I was helping her pack. She’s talked about having a little bit of lean in the house because a coworker gave it to her a while ago. This wasn’t a recent conversation, this was months ago. Well, as I’m packing a shelf, I find a dollar store bubble vial full of sticky liquid. The last time I dealt with overly sticky bubble vials was when I was a step parent, so I assumed it was expired bubbles and threw it away.

My girlfriend comes over, picks it up, and says “oh this isn’t bubbles, this is lean” and then walks to the other room without saying anything to go wash her hands. This absolutely fried my brain, I thought about taking it, but I instead threw a notepad over it to cover it and almost smoked a cig, but my girlfriend came back and saw the lean wasn’t where she left it. She accused me of taking it, which is fair if I’m being honest with myself. I’m not upset as in angry about it, it just made me very anxious along with being alone with opiates

I’m upset she told me there was lean on top of the trash can then went into the other room right after. Am I being ridiculous being so fucked up over it? I honestly got kinda mean on our phone call last night when I got home, I wasn’t screaming I just don’t do that, and I didn’t insult her or anything like that, I just don’t like the vocal tone I used looking back at it. I apologized on the phone for my vocal tone, but fortunately I do that sort of thing so rarely that she usually understands how much something has to bother me to show any sort of aggression.
