Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Just posting things he wishes were true and pretending they're real. Reality is dead in America.

The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as “THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,”

You heard him, American men catgirl-salute The US no longer exists and you're all T-GOTHS now, get your fishnets and black lipstick ready

He's going to rename it the Strait of America

[–] doleo@lemmy.one 25 points 1 month ago

Go, take that to Polymarket. Come back when youre rich enough to sink an aircraft carrier.

Reminder that the neofascists unironically believe that it's a virtue of statesmen to actively despise reality.

Iran sinks an aircraft carrier when?

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago (4 children)

It's the only way he'll learn

[–] nohaybanda@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He ain't learning shit, he'll just sink deeper into delusion

[–] SerialExperimentsGay@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The only way out of this is if Iran gets him so mad that he gets a heart attack or if his generals or somebody in a three letter agency get so fed up they coup him. Given the bloodletting and replacement with loyal stooges at the start of his term, the latter seems a lot less likely.

if that's gonna happen, it's likely he just gets impeached. i mean, if the feds hate him that much, so will congress. the gop is gonna take massive losses in the midterm if he can't get gas prices consistently low. i doubt the dems are gonna try to impeach their favorite scapegoat if they hold both chambers but maybe if the treats get too expensive. also if iran hits him with the heart attack gun it has to be worth it, i.e. vance has to be willing to pull back AFTER trump dies in suspicious circumstances. and if vance is willing to pull back after that, congress probably would be before it gets to that. same goes if the feds hit him but i guess at least then they have access to jd too.

Never is the question asked, is our president learning?

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Honestly, I think they would try to pretend its The Lusitania or The Maine and use it to justify a ground invasion.

They can not fathom such a hit to their ego. It just won't register as anything other than wanting vengeance and accusing anything less as treachery.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Ground invasion with what? They already tried to move soldiers into the region and failed.

The entirety of the US military simply does not have the personnel to conduct a ground invasion of Iran and have any chance at success. Casualties are guaranteed to be high. And it would be political suicide at home even more than this has already been

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

None of that means they won't do it anyways. My point is they will behave irrationally.

remember when the u.s. navy shot down an iranian passenger aircraft when he was president, killing over 100 civilians, and his response was "i'm not an apologize-for-america kind of guy"?

i remember

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Same

The tv at the gym was on CNN again, they were interviewing troops on one of the ships out there and they were all laughing and eating ice cream sundaes

Got me so worked up I broke my record on the elliptical by a fairly substantial margin

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

How long ago was it that the troops were whining and moaning about how the chocolate chip cookies or whatever the fuck ran out? Forget about an actual war, the second the AC breaks they’ll be killing each other for a chance to flee home

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 41 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So how does that even work. You can pay Iran to get through theirs and then also pay the US to get through theirs? If you pay Iran does the US not let you through? If you pay the US does Iran not let you through? We live in such a bizzare time

[–] red_giant@hexbear.net 40 points 1 month ago

Trump is about to declare that the US nuclear program is strictly for civilian uses.

He’s gonna fatwa Salman Rushdie.

[–] robotElder2@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What even is the margin on sailing an oil tanker? 20% couldn't possibly be leaving any meat on the bone for the carrier can it?

[–] LanyrdSkynrd@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

Like tariffs, it won't affect the profit margin in the long term. It'll just be a tax paid by the end user.

The strait of Hormuz isn't connected to Africa. You're thinking of the Bab el-Mandeb strait.

All without a properly prepared back up plan? If they did this 10 years from now after forcing Venezuela to send them all their oil all for war, then it might make some sense. But this? I hope they collapse, but given how the global community does not care, I'm not sure.

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

It's really a huge series of blunders.
