Also if you are capitalism supporter, angry socialists will down vote you to oblivion. You're either with them or you're witch to be hunted and burned on stake

[–] nitroemdash@lemmy.wtf 2 points 4 hours ago

That's concentrated on .ml instances

Is that word censored? If not why did you write in two lines?

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 1 points 6 hours ago

Its a joke. Piefed. Pie-fed.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 19 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

You're not trapped here with me, I'm trapped here with you.

[–] kamenlady@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

We're all trapped in this together.

It's been years now, and I still haven't found the exit.

As a Canadian on Lemmy, I keep running in to the same couple of people... Hi, lady from Calgary, and guy from Ottawa! Nice to see you again!

[–] meta4@retrolemmy.com 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Well, what am I supposed to label you as? The lady got Calgary and the guy got Ottawa. Are you claiming all of Canada? Making your label "Guy from the entirety of Canada"

[–] phanto@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

I am! I'm guy from all of Canada! I haven't been to Yukon.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 hours ago

I don't know if you mean me but I'm a guy from Ottawa and it's nice to see you too!

[–] toothpaste_sandwich@thebrainbin.org 6 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

I'd argue that one of the main issues with the Fediverse is mostly just that interaction counts don't federate properly. Mastodon made some good steps there recently, but it's still not there Fediverse-wide.

My Lemmy client, for instance, says this post only has 12 comments and 71 upvotes, but if you look at it on the instance it was posted on, it's actually much more. This, of course, makes the Fediverse appear to be much less popular than it actually is. Which scares away new users immensely.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 8 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

That's likely an Mbin issue. Ernst, the creator of the original product Kbin before it got forked and taken over as Mbin, made a confusing decision to have both upvotes and boosts together, and not just on the microblog (Mastodon) side with magazines but even side-by-side also on the Threadiverse with communities. So when you press the "upvote"... I forget which action even occurs - upvoting vs. boosting. Sorting by votes also gets very wonky.

And yes, all those weird design decisions very much scare people away from Mbin: the largest Mbin instance has only <500 active accounts and all Mbin instances combined have mere hundreds of users. For comparison, the flagship PieFed instance has >1k users, the NSFW one has twice that, and Lemmy.world alone has >13k!!!

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 3 points 10 hours ago

Honestly I have no idea how all this works, it seems very confusing. But luckily I don't need to understand it to use it lol. I just picked the Australia zone because I live there

[–] inkblade@lemmy.world 0 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

It is suppose to be ranked by upvotes.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 2 points 4 hours ago

But which upvote type - boosts or votes? Why do boosts exist at all then, if they don't "boost" anything? I thought I remembered (granted it's been a couple of years since I migrated from Reddit to kbin.social) that it was boosts, and it was upvotes that existed but were irrelevant? (If so, but not anymore, then how and why was that changed?)

Not that you need to answer every one of these - I'm just sharing my confusion, which many people seem to also share.

Some instances intentionally filter out votes such as non-humans, fuckin nazis, and also fuckin Tankies, so I expect at least a little variance in numbers.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Some instances also filter out trolls. Oddly enough, not all do that though...

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Oh! Another big one would be Threads users. Some instances completely block FaceBook Threads.

[–] AvocadoCumToast@lemmy.zip 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)
[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

No sorry, we just lost old Tommy, and nobody knows if Violet survived last Friday night.

[–] lacethespace@sh.itjust.works 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I enjoyed this so much more as it was at 24 upvotes when I came upon it. Just barely qualifies for plural of dozen.

[–] pseudo@jlai.lu 1 points 16 hours ago

If you want, I could use my dozen alt account to boost it up ;-)

[–] lime@feddit.nu 3 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

why are you cross-posting a year-old post?

[–] pseudo@jlai.lu 3 points 16 hours ago

Because it is fun.

[–] dil@piefed.zip 3 points 19 hours ago

I've seen more than a few now

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online -5 points 20 hours ago (5 children)

Honestly all the Lemmy instances could shut off permanently tomorrow and I would be cool with that. Fuck those tankies on ML.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 6 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Most Lemmy instances are not pro-tankie.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think you should waste your time with FiniteBanjo. You can find how evil he is when talking about for example the USA deadly sanctions on Cuba like this . Also denying facts about the minab school he tried to spread the lie that it may be the regime that bombed that school He is as bad as tankies

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Careful, pointing out the stuff like that makes you a dirty tankie in their eyes.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 0 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Almost all Lemmy instances throw up a seasonal banner begging users to fund tankies like Dessalines and the ML instance.

Because the Lemmy platform is developed by those Tankies and they push it in updates.

Piefed has been around for a while now, there is no longer a good reason to stay on Lemmy.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (2 children)

While there are many good differences that Piefed implements, its heavy-handed use of built-in content blocks is concerning. Arguments have been made that such features are merely a default option that can be changed by other instances, but aside from the dominance of piefed.social, many instance owners are unlikely to change most default settings.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 0 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Tbf, a TON of information surrounding that issue turned out to be false. Though at its core you may be correct - and yet the same is also true of Lemmy?

Especially in the past, like when Lemmy at first hard-coded a slur word filter (in English no less), and in response Nutomic told people that... well, read for yourself:

If you dont like it, fork it. Stop bothering us about it, we will never fully remove the slur filter.

(Though they later relented.)

PieFed is not perfectly administered (Rimu admitted this, and stepped back from being the sole leader of the project), and neither is Lemmy. Both are imperfect software tools, both offered as FOSS. Yay - we all win with that philosophy!!

At the end of the day though, if someone is relying upon a free instance service, then it is up to those instance admins to decide their policies, while your only choice is which one you will be beholden to. This too is not different from how Lemmy works, though one difference is in how extremely FAST PieFed develops new features, and also in how responsive the devs are. I don't blame anyone for choosing not to move, but objectively speaking I don't see Lemmy passing any purity tests more often than PieFed - especially given how it is way easier to install a personal PieFed instance than a Lemmy one.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 3 hours ago

It wasn't but sure.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

As most users (myself included) would rather join an established instance than spin up their own, ultimately I think whichever platform has the least friction for migrating Redditors is best.

Different people might prefer one or the other for different reasons, so as long as both can coexist and hopefully gradually adopt feature parity, the main focus should be growing the Threadiverse as a whole at the expense of Reddit.

[–] toothpaste_sandwich@thebrainbin.org 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Try not to be too cynical.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 0 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Tankies wish us all immediate harm, I will never tolerate them.

From Russia's war in Ukraine to China helping reelect Donald Trump, they are evil to their core.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 13 hours ago

If I get rounded up and thrown into a concentration camp because of their shit, I'm going to be pissed 😡.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 4 points 20 hours ago

It’s all just one really serious person.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Instead of raging about something you're powerless to change, why not just block those instances you dislike and never have to worry about them again?

Or, as you said all instances, you could delete your account and touch some grass for a bit.

All of us, at times, need a break from the internet. Even if we don't realise it yet. Maybe now it's your time and we'll see you later, when/if you return?

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online -1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

EDIT: You're clearly confused. I am on Piefed not Lemmy.

Oh, we're far from powerless. The quarantine of the Tankie Triad has been very successful, as will the move to Piefed.

Because people like me speak up, because the instance admins are aware of the problem and willing to make the needed changes.
